Diesal have thier own advantage, especially for enormous lower end torque.
driving a diesal car in city traffic is a bliss.it keeps rolling. I had a nightmarish experience driving a hyundai i10 in calicut traffic.I was required to press accel pedal in rigorous manner which tired me in few minutes. but in my punto, just keep a foot on clutch pedal.

said that it doesn't help in long runs especially on silent night rides...the clatter will reverb in you ears no matter how high end is the car .

Choice in between petrol or diesel fuel is limited to segment hatch back or entry level sedan.
If at all the petrol and diesel prices are same then for SUV or high capacity engines no challenge for diesel powered engines.
Classic example how many people bought petrol Safari Yes it was available in petrol version too.
Any one seen petrol powered Scorpio
What is sales figure of petrol Inova as compared diesel Inova.
Skoda Octavia and Laura not seen too many in petrol avatar.

If at all diesel and petrol are in same price tag then only
User group of =< 1.3 petrol engines will have choice positively inclined towards petrol engines.
User group of big cars say more than 1.6 petrol engine have to go for diesel.
User group of SUV sorry petrol technology doesn’t support them.

well it really boils down to ones preference. i prefer petrols due to lower maintainance cost smooth engine and no clatter. i agree diesels have a lot of power and torque and sometimes when im tanking up i feel jealous seeing diesel guys filling up at almost half of what i pay.
the sales guy kept pushing for a diesel i did not go ahead due to own preference and there was a 8-10 months wait for diesel.
btw my daily usage is 60-80 kms with a weekend drive of 300-400 kms
which makes my monthly usage as 2500 kms
which makes my fuel expenses around 15k :stupid:

btw when will the fuel prices go down

Well said powerpacked.

Nick, I also spend @ 8000 INR on Petrol for my i10 auto. Regarding fuel prices going down, that too in India is like day dreaming.

Now that is great information and guess so its better I stick with a Petrol after all maybe. I was starting to think of changing to a Diesel as the fuel bills are literally making it unable for me to see the month get through.[confused]

But now I guess it makes better sense to stick to the petrol, Rather than go on and buy a Diesel hatch and get into more liabilities and commitments. Another thing is its about time for me to change cars anyway and I'm wondering of going for the Alto K10. The perfect car for a Petrol head like myself on a shoestring.[thumbsup]

The article is hypothetical AFA cost difference of rs 20,between two fuels.ln reality it is
Rs 25. Also they have contradicted themselves by mentioning Toyota recommendations about 2k km\month.

Extra Rs 90 k saved on the 1st day of petrol car, are fetching 10% intrest is also hypothetical. Potential car buyer who is in possession of extra Rs 90 k, thinks of topend version, or next segment.

Most importantly , pranab mukherji has given clear hints that he is going to impose tax on diesel cars, which will increse d-car prices by rs 8 k/lakh. Govt wants to retrieve the
money spent on subsidy for diesel .

So best way is that if you want to go for diesel car, go before union and state budget.
as sheila dixit has already imposed such tax.
