2014 Volkswagen Polo GT TDI Caught Testing With New 1.5-Litre Engine - could launch in May 2014.

With limited changes to the exterior, the 1.5TDI and the 6 speed DSG will be the highlight of the facelift. The engine being localised will keep the costs under control.

The Volkswagen Polo GT TDI will see a major change under the hood. The 1.6-litre TDI engine will be replaced by a new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder TDI mill exclusively developed for India. The engine will get a variable-geometry turbo (VGT) and will be tuned to produce around 104 BHP of power for the GT version. The engine will be mated to a 6-speed DSG automatic gearbox to keep the shifts as quick as possible. The 1.5-litre TDI engine will replace the 1.2-litre 3-cylinder motor on the regular diesel Polo as well with 89 BHP on tap.

This seems to be a good move by Volkswagen India group to introduce a bigger engine as well as getting the tax benefit with the 1.5 Liter engine. 1.2TDI currently doing the job in Polo keeps you always wanting for some more. 1.5TDI engine will make it a hoot to drive and the more powerful one in the GT TDI will surely keep the enthusiasts happy. Should surely increase the sales too for Polo with this facelifted version as earlier people used to shy away from it due to the 3 cylinder engine. But only if VW doesn't become too greedy and price is way above the current model.

Expect the price to be moderately increased since this engine will be a localized one. Will be cheaper than the currently available 1.6TDI [:D]

Well hoping for that. Localization holds the key here. The refreshed GT TDI variant's prices should actually be lower than the current one as the 1.5TDI engine will get tax benefits where as the current 1.6 mill doesn't. I am a little skeptical that VW might increase prices over the top for the regular variants which currently have 1.2TDI engine. An increase of about 20-30k is acceptable, anything beyond that for the regular variants might not get the results they intend for.

2016 Volkswagen Polo to feature sportier styling & better technology - to debut in 2016. Expect it to be more 'Golf' like with better interior space.
The next Polo will become a more "mature" car with sportier styling and improved technology. Details are limited but the magazine says we can expect a flatter roof, a longer wheelbase and a more steeply raked windscreen.
The model will reportedly be launched as a three- and five-door hatchback but there could eventually be a number of different body styles. Possibilities are rumored to include everything from a Speedster to a more rugged CrossPolo.

Engine options remain unconfirmed but choices are rumored to include:
  • A 1.0-liter TSI with outputs of 95 PS (66 kW) and 110 PS (81 kW)
  • A 1.4-liter TDI with outputs of 75 PS (55 kW), 90 PS (66 kW) and 105 PS (77 kW)
  • A 1.4-liter petrol with 150 PS (110 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque
  • A 1.8-liter petrol with 185 PS (136 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque
  • A 2.0-liter petrol with 231 PS (170 kW) and 370 Nm (273 lb-ft) of torque
