2020 Land Rover Defender Launched In India; Prices Start At ₹ 69.99 Lakh

Land Rover has finally launched the all-new Defender in India with prices starting at ₹ 69.99 lakh for the base Defender 90 variant, going all the way up to ₹ 87.10 lakh for the range topping Defender 110 HSE variant (all prices ex-showroom, India). The British carmaker has also started accepting bookings for both models- the short wheelbase (three-door) Defender 90 spec as well as long wheelbase Defender 110 (five-door). The 2020 Land Rover Defender is being sold in India as a completely built unit (CBU) and both body types are being offered in five variants- Base, S, SE, HSE and First Edition. At present, the Jeep Wrangler is the only model on sale in India that stands as its true rival.

The new Defender has done away with its basic nature when it comes to features and cabin finish. It debuts Land Rover's new Pivi Pro infotainment system which along with other trendy connectivity features, also comes with over-the-air (OTA) software updates which is functional anywhere in the world. Two smartphones can be connected simultaneously to the 10-inch touchscreen and the navigation system can cut voice guidance when driving through a familiar route. Other features like 360-degree camera assist, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and head up display are something that we have never seen in a Defender before. The new model also gets 85 ECUs that can process 21,000 network messages which is pretty impressive. Moreover, it also gets flexible seating configuration- five Seater, six seater and 7 Seater (5+2). The Defender 90 is a 5 seater version but customers can also opt for a middle seat in the front row which also doubles up as an armrest. The Defender 110 is a seven seater SUV.

Jaguar Land Rover is developing a prototype hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) based on the new Land Rover Defender, with testing scheduled to begin this year.

The FCEV concept is part of Jaguar Land Rover’s aim to achieve zero tailpipe emissions by 2036, and net zero carbon emissions across its supply chain, products and operations by 2039, in line with the Reimagine strategy announced last month.

FCEVs, which generate electricity from hydrogen to power an electric motor, are complimentary to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) on the journey to net zero vehicle emissions. Hydrogen-powered FCEVs provide high energy density and rapid refuelling, and minimal loss of range in low temperatures, making the technology ideal for larger, longer-range vehicles, or those operated in hot or cold environments.

Since 2018, the global number of FCEVs on the road has nearly doubled while hydrogen refuelling stations have increased by more than 20%**. By 2030, forecasts predict hydrogen-powered FCEV deployment could top 10 million with 10 000 refuelling stations worldwide*.

Jaguar Land Rover’s advanced engineering project, known as Project Zeus, is part funded by the government-backed Advanced Propulsion Centre, and will allow engineers to understand how a hydrogen powertrain can be optimised to deliver the performance and capability expected by its customers: from range to refuelling, and towing to off-road ability.

The zero tailpipe emission prototype New Defender FCEV will begin testing towards the end of 2021 in the UK to verify key attributes such as off-road capability and fuel consumption.

To deliver Project Zeus, Jaguar Land Rover has teamed up with world class R&D partners, including Delta Motorsport, AVL, Marelli Automotive Systems and the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC) to research, develop and create the prototype FCEV.

The work done alongside our partners in Project Zeus will help us on our journey to become a net zero carbon business by 2039, as we prepare for the next generation of zero tailpipe emissions vehicles.”

The Defender 130 will feature an extended body, making it the largest and most spacious iteration of the reborn off-roader and completing a three-tiered line-up of Defender models, alongside the 90 and 110.

From these patent images, it appears that the wheelbase of the Defender 130 will remain unchanged. Instead, the extra length is afforded by a much longer rear overhang than the 110, with a larger side window that extends all the way to the back of the car. Land Rover will probably utilise the extra space to improve leg room for third-row passengers, as well as increasing boot capacity.

The extended rear overhang will impact the Defender's off-road ability, however, and its departure angles will be lower than smaller variants. Elsewhere, the design is unchanged, save for what look to be slightly redesigned side vents on the front wings.

The Defender 130 is set to be launched this year, and our snappers have previously caught the car testing on German roads in a black and white camouflage, with black wheels and dark tinted windows.

Clearly featuring a stretched body with a bigger rear overhang, the 130 will offer more cabin space and seating for up to eight – one more than a Defender 110 with the optional third row.

When it arrives, it's rumoured that the Defender 130 will be positioned as the most luxurious version of the Defender, with the flagship Land Rover off-roader set to be offered in top-end trims only. Despite this version packing considerably more luggage space, it's unlikely a Hardtop commercial version will be available.

Claimed to measure in at around 5.1-metres long, the Defender 130 would be something like 342mm longer than the 110 and around 227mm longer than its closest rival, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

Under the bonnet of the prototype is Land Rover's latest mild-hybrid 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol, that should provide for around 394bhp and a 0-62mph sprint of around 6.0 seconds.

As well as the powerful petrol, the firm's 296bhp mild-hybrid twin-turbo-diesel 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder will also be available and that should be capable of blending both a sub-seven-second 0-62mph dash and a 30mpg average. Both the 399bhp plug-in hybrid P400e and the most powerful 518bhp supercharged 5.0-litre V8 power units could also be offered.

Following on from the longer Defender 130, Land Rover is also rumoured to be secretly developing a pick-up version of the Defender that is expected to sit on the same extra-long platform. When it arrives, the dual-cab pick-up will rival the Ford Ranger.

Like the Defender 90 and 110, the new 130 body design borrows its name from the original Defender family, inspired by the longest model in the line-up. A host of exterior and interior design enhancements and technologies distinguish New Defender 130, uniquely balancing comfort with customary Defender durability and capability.

Defender 130 has its own colour palette, with a new, exclusive Sedona Red option ensuring the 130 stands out in the line-up. The exterior is complemented by the Extended Bright Pack – available in addition to the existing Bright Pack – which provides a distinct exterior design with Ceres Silver Satin finish around all lower body cladding and front and rear skid plates in Noble Chrome.

Inside, thoughtful storage and convenience solutions are provided for every passenger across all three rows of seating. This ensures Defender 130 caters for passengers in every seat, with effortless access to the spacious three-abreast third row in a bright and airy cabin.

The interior design features new colour and material options, providing an amplified all-terrain experience. The latest connected technologies and chassis systems – including a new, larger 28.95 cm (11.4) Pivi Pro touchscreen, standard Electronic Air Suspension and Cabin Air Purification Plus – provide the ultimate support and comfort for modern off-road excursions.

The New Defender 130 is available in HSE and X specifications.

Ensuring adventures begin and end effortlessly, now all Defenders come with Keyless Entry – including Defender 130 - feature Approach Unlock and Automated Walkaway Lock. When the key fob is detected approaching the vehicle, it automatically unlocks when it is within 1.5 metres. When leaving the vehicle, New Defender 130 will automatically lock when the key fob is more than 1.5 metres away.

Exterior design

Defender’s iconic silhouette has been elegantly extended by 340 mm at the rear to provide enhanced interior space across all three rows, without compromising its unparalleled all-terrain capabilities.

All Defender 130 models are fitted with a panoramic sunroof as standard, with a second sunroof above the third row also featuring on all Defender 130s.

To maintain the distinctive rear design of the Defender, Land Rover engineers have crafted a subtle boat tail-style uplift that also maximises the unparalleled all-terrain capability customers expect from Defender, providing a departure angle of 28.5 degrees2. The surrounds for the rear LED lighting units have been re-engineered to maintain the three distinct lines that define Defender’s side profile as they rise subtly towards the rear.

Narvik Black roof rails are fitted as standard, while Defender’s full range of exterior accessories – including the Explorer, Adventure, Country and Urban packs – are also available.

Ceres Silver detailing can be found on the bonnet louvres and side fenders of all Defender 130 models, perfectly complemented by 50.8 cm (20) alloy wheels, which are available in a Bright Silver finish.

Spacious interior

For Defender 130, Land Rover is introducing enhanced colour and material options for customers looking for an even more refined experience, effortlessly balanced with the tough, rugged character and more interior space than ever.

Land Rover engineers have created an impressive interior space by effectively shrink-wrapping interior packaging components around the body-in-white, maximising the amount of usable interior space, without the need for a large on-road footprint.

Passengers in rows two and three benefit from a small stadium rise, for superior visibility. Getting in to the third row is effortless, as the row two seats slide and fold forwards to provide wide access. From the tailgate, customers can simply lower the Defender’s Electronic Air Suspension with buttons inside the load area to aid with loading items into the rear.

Defender 130 provides a spacious and practical load area, with up to 3893 l of cargo volume even with the rearmost seats in place. When the seats are not in use, they stow to create a large loading area, giving customers the ultimate choice in configuring the interior arrangement that best suits their needs. They are split in 40:20:40 configuration for added convenience.

A new material finish – Natural Light Oak engineered wood veneer – is inspired by driftwood and lends a natural, modern look and feel, available to elegantly complement the Light Oyster Perforated Windsor Leather seating. Vintage Tan Perforated Windsor Leather is also available across the Defender line-up.

New Defender 130 integrates the global location platform, what3words, giving customers accurate and precise navigation even in the most remote environments. British technology company what3words has divided the globe into a grid of 57 trillion 3m x 3m squares, each with a unique, easy-to-remember three-word address.

Interior air quality on every trip is enhanced by Cabin Air Purification Plus, which makes its Defender debut in the new 130. It is fitted to the largest Defender in the line-up as standard and combines nanoeTM X technology for allergen reduction and pathogen removal, to help significantly reduce odours and viruses. In addition, CO2 Management and PM2.5 Cabin Air Filtration improve the cabin environment by monitoring interior and exterior air and adjusting accordingly, ensuring occupants experience the best available air quality.

Advanced nanoeTM X technology is scientifically proven to significantly reduce viruses and bacteria and the Purge function allows customers to prime the cabin prior to departure remotely, using their smartphone, to ensure optimum air quality from the very beginning of every journey.

Efficient powertrains

Defender 130 is available with a powerful and efficient choice of electrified powertrains, including the P400 mild-hybrid Ingenium six-cylinder petrol, delivering a power of 294 kW and a torque of 550 Nm, as well as the D300 Ingenium six-cylinder diesel, delivering a power of 221 kW and a torque of 650 Nm.

Unstoppable capability

Every Defender 130 is fitted with Land Rover’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (iAWD) system and eight-speed ZF automatic transmission as standard. The iAWD technology efficiently and effectively manages the powertrain and power distribution between the front and rear axles, optimising on-road efficiency and all-terrain capability as necessary.

The Defender 130 is also fitted with Electronic Air Suspension with Adaptive Dynamics and Land Rover’s advanced Terrain Response® system for unrivalled all-terrain capability and driver confidence in all environments. The combination of advanced systems ensures comfortable and effortless progress across broken surfaces, delivering agile performance and has a wading depth up to 900 mm in water.

Updated Land Rover Defender revealed with captain chairs option

The Land Rover Defender line-up has been shuffled in international markets, with the addition of a luxurious new three-row version, a more potent diesel engine, and a plug-in hybrid that uses a three-cylinder engine.

The revamp comes four years after the unveil of the L663-generation Defender and, while not as substantial as a full-blown facelift, this update ushers in a range of important mechanical and cosmetic tweaks, along with a reorganisation of the trim structure.

The headline change for the updated Defender comes under the bonnet, where the D300 diesel engine has been swapped for the more potent D350 from the Range Rover, boosting outputs by 50hp and 50Nm – to 350hp and 700Nm – with the result that “everything from overtaking to towing is even more effortless”, says JLR. The company has not revealed any performance figures for the new engine, but no doubt it will improve slightly on the D300's 7.0sec 0-100kph time.

So too has the P400 Ingenium straight-six petrol been replaced by a 425hp version of JLR's supercharged 5.0-litre V8. In addition, the plug-in hybrid Defender swaps its 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine for the P300e arrangement used in the Evoque and Discovery Sport PHEVs; the Defender P300e has a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine that combined with the electric motors makes a combined 310hp.

The changes have been made in order to make the Defender compliant with Euro 6e emissions legislation, so no doubt the straight-six petrol engine will soon also be retired from the Discovery, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport line-ups in international markets.

Chief among the cabin upgrades is the introduction of a new Captain Chairs pack for the three-row Defender 130, which swaps the middle bench for a pair of individual armchairs – with access in between for the rearmost three seats. With heating and ventilation as standard, and with easy access to a pair of cupholders in the middle, the captain chairs are said to bring “front-row comfort to those travelling in row two”, and are available on Defender X and V8 models.

They can also be added to the Defender X-Dynamic HSE as part of a new Signature Interior pack, which brings 14-way electrically adjustable front seats, heated third-row seats, Windsor leather and Kvadrat upholstery, and a bespoke colour scheme for the interior trim.

There is also a new 'Sedona' edition of the 110 revealed. It wears bespoke red paintwork, a black trim pack and – optionally – a bonnet decal depicting the rocky terrain of the eponymous desert town in Arizona.

In markets abroad, the Defender is now available in a simplified range of trims comprising S, X-Dynamic SE, X-Dynamic HSE, X and V8 variants, with the same choice of 90, 110 and 130 bodystyles.

Whether these updates to the Defender’s line-up will be seen in India is yet to be confirmed. Land Rover currently has the Defender on sale in the country in 90, 110 and 130 bodystyles, priced from Rs 98.5 lakh, Rs 97 lakh and Rs 1.39 crore, respectively. There are five powertrain options on offer – 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre turbo-petrols, a 3.0-litre diesel, a 5.0-litre V8 petrol and a 2.0-litre petrol-plug-in hybrid.
