Last day of the trip, you can take Mavalli-Kanakpura road to NICE road, as the road is scenic, but single lane. On the way you have the Pyramid meditation center and Art Of Living International Center, which are also part of Bangalore's travel destinations now.

If you have time ,check them out too.

Completed the trip. Thanks to all who provided tips and suggestions. Below is how it went.

Day 1

Started from home at 4:14 AM and reached EC at 9:25.

Took the usual Tambaram, Manimangalam, Sripermbudur, Krishnagiri, Hosur route. 5 hrs 10 mts to cover 317 KMs from home which is 7 kms away from Tambaram. The time includes 45 minute break for BF and a 15 minute delay at Krishnagiri tollgate.

65 KM stretch from Sriperumbudur to Chennasamudram Toll is very bad.

Had breakfast at Saravana Bhavan on the right 8 KMS from Krishnagiri toll. Taste was good though a little costly.

From EC to Mysore (Ruch the Prince hotel) took the Kanakapura route. Though its 2 way, roads were excellent except for 7 or 8 KMs where relaying work was happening. Took 3 hrs to cover this 163 KMs. This is excluding the diversion that I took at Malavalli to visit Shivanasamudra falls.

Both the falls view point at Shivanasamudra were fantastic. I liked Gagnachukki Falls View Point a lot. I am thinking how the view will be if water is flowing at full level. Barachukki falls was also good, but the stairs were closed. So can't view the falls up close and we were disappointed. Will have to visit again.

Did notice Art of Living center on the way, but as we were already late, didn’t check in.

Day 2

Visited Dubare Elephant Camp in the morning, Namdroling Monastery at noon and Brindavan Garden in the evening.

Kids enjoyed Dubare Elephant Camp. When we went to Namdroling Monastery, some prayers were going on and we were not allowed inside the main hall. But seeing the mass prayer from outside itself was a different experience. Brindavan Garden was ok. We just roamed till the night lights were switched on and returned without seeing the fountain lighting as the crowd was unbearable.

Day 3

Visited Mysore Zoo in the morning and Palace (to see lighting) in evening.

Zoo was neat, clean, lot of green cover and the path was organized well. Though I don't like to see wildlife in cages, somehow the birds and animals kept here looked healthy and energetic to me which was good. But the space they were kept was very small, especially for Lions, Tigers etc.

Went to Hotel RRR at 3 PM, waited for 30 mts and seeing at the crowd it looked like it would take another 1 hr. So we left and went to Guru sweet mart, bought Mysore Pak and then returned to Ruchi to have a late lunch.

Palace lighting was quite an experience. Glad that I planned to see it on a Sunday and on time. Rwched there at 6:45 :-)

Day 4

Checked out hotel and visited Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary. As this was off season - nothing much was there except regular Storks, Coromorants, Ibises, Darters and of course crocodiles. But the place was neat and clean.

Took 2.5 hrs to reach EC from Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary via Mandya.

After having lunch at a relations house at EC, started at 4:15 and reached Tambaram at 9:20. This include a 15 minute delay at Krishnagiri toll, 30 minute delay at Chennasamudram toll and a stopover for diesel fill.

Only thing that we missed in our planned itinerary was masala dosa at Vinayaka Mylari / GTR and a visit to KSIC silk factory. Hope we will do that next time.

I went to Mysore via the Mysore Road - cutting through the heart of Bangalore. The road was chock-a-block with traffic; no surprises there. It took me more than 3.5 hours to reach Mysore

I did visit Ranganthittu and it was surprisingly sparse w.r.t tourists. The weather was fantastic and like you mentioned there were a variety of birds including herons and of course crocodiles.

I took more than 3.5 hours to reach east of Bangalore again on Mysore Road

We reached Ranganthittu at 9 am yesterday. At that time 7 or 8 cars were there. But when we came out at 11, it was completely full. We too saw crocodiles there and even spotted a baby crocodile - very very small one near the bushes. At first glance it looked like a small broken branch.

Having used both the Bangalore to Mysore roads - I prefer the Kanakapura road any day :-)

The 4 days when I was there in Bang/Mysore it didn't sweat - not even once. I envy the people in Bangalore/Mysore.

There are a couple of lakes on Kanakapura road, that we always stop by. One is half way to Kanakapura and the other is before Chamrajnagar. Both are on the left side. Did you see those?

Good of you to update with the trip. Looks like you had a good time.

Saravana Bhavan: Is that an original one? I do stop here often. But the taste between this one & the one in Salem (Aasai Dosai) is very different.

RRR is iconic. I always end-up taking up parcel & going to the hotel to have it!

Masala Dosa/KSIC: There is always next time.

Best avoided on weekends. Definitely to be avoided on long weekends. Much better to go through Kanakpura Road, even though limited (or none!) food / break options.

Very true about Kanakpura route. You should visit us in April/May, let us see if you still envy us.

I don't think this is original Saravana Bhavan. But still the taste was good - had a blast with Poori, Ghee Dosai and Pongal.

Salem - I normally stop at Hotel Shree Saravana Bhavan which is immediately on the left near Mettupati toll. Taste will be good - but again I think this not the Saravana Bhavan brand hotel.

April/May I would still envy because 33/34 degrees Bangalore is cooler compared to 40/41 in Chennai [:D]

No Peter. As we were already late for lunch, home ministry strictly ordered to go straight to her relations house in EC. So no stopovers. [frustration]

A quick update on a Bangalore-Mysore-Bangalore, road conditions. You guessed it right. This route is NOT through Mysore Road. Hence this update.

Onward journey (Saturday).
2pm - 530pm: Bangalore - Brindavan Gardens, KRS. Bangalore - Kanakapura - Halaguru - Malavalli - Bannur - Srirangapatna - KRS. 2 lanes dual carriageway all the way. Just one coffee/bio break @ near Bannur at a non-descript place.

Bangalore - KR Road - NICE Junction in Kanakpura Road: Littered with Metro construction. Traffic slowed us down. Mostly in 2nd gear.

NICE Junction - Kanakpura: KSRTC buses slow you down when they try to pass other 2/4 wheelers. Else, swift traffic & decent progress. 2 major works going on. (1) Between Sri Sri Ashram & Kaggalipura & (2) Harohalli village the traffic on the other side (Mysore to Bangalore) is blocked & progress is very slow on the non-existing road / road shoulders. Not exactly sparse traffic, but not dense as well.

Kanakpura - Halaguru - Malavalli - Bannur: Excellent surface, 2 lane dual carriageway, sparse traffic. Lots of 2-wheelers though.

Bannur - Srirangapatna: Decent surface, single lane carriageway, sparse traffic. Except for 1 diversion, didn't face any issues.

Srirangapatna - KRS: Usual route littered with humongous speedbreakers.

Return journey (Sunday).

130pm - 7pm. Mysore - Harohalli - Bannur - Malavalli - Halaguru - Kanakpura - Bangalore. Took parcel from RRR & had it in at a road-side farm after Bannur. Stopped for coffee @ MTR 1926 near Sri Sri Ashram.

Mysore - Harohalli - Bannur: Excellent surface, 2 lane dual carriageway, almost no traffic.

2 major works going on. In both directions, had to endure slow moving single-lane traffic through BWSSB pipeline road.

Otherwise, road conditions discussed already.

Overall, a very peaceful drive compared to weekend madness of drivers on the Mysore Road.

Note: Mysore Zoo was open to my surprise (5th Feb 2017). I read in the newspapers that it was closed due to the Bird Flu scare.
