Ok..... So I was planning to write this 10000 km review since
many days but honestly I was too lazy to do it. And by the
time I shrug off my laziness and get my pen (and my ass)
moving the car has already done 10600 km.
To cut a long story short. Punto 90 HP has been a good
companion to me for the last 6 months. But much more was
expected. It is like a much awaited movie like say Rowdy
Rathore where you go with a lot of expectations and you come
out of the movie hall not completely satisfied and not
completely disappointed - the in between feeling.
The car is good on long drives in terms of fuel economy and
tackling bad roads but the seats are not very cushiony. Even
my Wagon R had more cushiony seats. I have been on two major
drives one to Bhimashankar near Pune (approximately 450 km to
and fro) and then to Saputara near Nashik (approximately 450
km to and fro). On both journeys I got a FE of around 20 kmpl
but the seats and rear leg space if you are carrying more
than two passengers takes out the joy out of the good
FE.*
Another plus point with the car is the strong built quality.
A Estilo at a decent speed happened to bump into me while I
was waiting at a signal. While Punto was unfazed the Estilo
had a major dent in the bumper. All I got as a reminder of
the incident was the red paint scrapped of the Estilo and
stuck to my bumper.*
City driving in this car is the not most pleasant of
experiences even though it has a good low end torque. The car
does not wobble even at 20 kmph in the 4th gear. To get going
when the signal turns green is very slow (this may be because
I do not like to revv hard in the first gear). Even the
humble auto rickshaw overtakes me - though of course for only
some distance. Of late I have observed that I am getting a
very low average in my city driving ranging between 12 to 14
kmpl. I guess it may be because I always use the ACC. When I
bought the car in December I didn't need to put the ACC
continuously on due to the cold weather and that was probably
helping the average to be around 16 for city driving. Another
possibility I am considering is changing the air filter and
the engine oil. Also recently I have started using Nitrogen
for the tyres. Does this have any correlation? NEED EXPERT
ADVICE ON THIS ISSUE.*
Fiat service at least in Mumbai is good. Fortune is doing a
neat job. It is cheap and reliable. One of my friend's Linea
broke down near Dhule due to the clutch plate burning. He
came to Mumbai in a rented vehicle. Fiat Dhule got the clutch
plate replaced and the car delivered to his home at
Kandivali. And can you believe that the cost came to around
Rs 8800. Including clutch plate, labour, petrol and toll.
Dhule is around 400 km from Mumbai. Honda would have charged
him at least 15000. *
To potential buyers I would like to advice that this is a
good value for money car. This may not have the interiors of
i20 or the snob value of VW or Skoda. But the driver in you
will not be disappointed especially if you are a outdoors
type of person.*
The car has got head turning looks. It is arguably the best
looking car in its segment. Even Polo and Fabia and i20
owners would agree. Running cost is low. But do not expect to
burn the road. The too speed I have taken is 160 kmph on
Mumbai Nashik expressway. It could have got better but I have
a become a mature driver after owning this car.*
Good luck to all potential buyers and Cheers to all fellow
Punters.*
P.S. Saw Ferrari Ki Sawaari. They make mockery of Fiat cars
in one of the dialogues. To fellow Mumbai punters let's
organize a FIAT KI SAWAARI meet this rainy season. We can
take the expressway to Pune, visit the Fiat Caffe and return.
What say... Rajeev et al.*
