I remeber I watched one study documentary on discovery few years back.
That was an in-car phone experiment.
What that experiment proved that when you are talking on phone using phone or headset or even the car speaker, if the sound if coming from side-ways, your total attention goes to your ear and towards your side where the sound is coming from. And in this process you almost loose attention on front side though you are looking straight.

However if the sound is coming from front, you don;t loose attention. And I have verified these fact myself many a times.
Believe me its for our safety.

Thats different point that bangalore police might not have enforced rule after watching this study [;)]

Smart guy!!!
They will enforce a law that all the glasses must be rolled down while driving .Or you are not supposed to talk at all while driving. This can go to any extent poor car owners!
I think next step would be no driver should talk whether the windows are rolled-up or rolled-down. if you talk (you may talk to fellow passenger or singing a song or talking thru BT) that is it. Your licence is gone. How is it?

Well, this is a rule much indeed, at least in a city like Bangalore where you can see almost everyone on phone while driving / riding. However, restricting BT thru ICE is step ahead than stupidity. Yup, this isn't any new as we have seen more worse judgement like Sun Film Ban.

In general, talking on phone cannot be compared with talking to a fellow passenger in the car as the former needs thinking and imagination, which is not the case otherwise. Believe it or not, our facial expressions, actions, body language changes while on phone than in person. Noticed ever? Because, we get deep in to the conversation with the person on phone as it's not face to face. So, it attracts a lot of our attention for sure. And thus while driving, it's not permissible. In many occasions, if a vehicle ahead is slow than normal, undecided between two lanes, or inconsistent in someway or other, I guessed the driver is on phone and all the times my guess was perfect.

So, am I against BT thru ICE? Definitely not. It's a boon for us and one of the reason for me to choose Figo. But, as a responsible citizen, we should restrict it only to the necessities and emergencies and keep the calls as shortest as possible.

BTW, if as per Mr. Dayanand, talking on BT thru ICE is illegal, why the hell RTOs allow BT in ICE which has been a USP these days? As usual deferred thoughts or the Police and RTOs don't talk to each other?!

I agree with Subbu and quantized. Even we say that like we are talking to our passengers we are talking thru BT. But somehow it attracts lot of attention. I have faced that (bike as well car). Some time I used to talk to my friends thru hands-free while driving and I may not know the time I have driven. Suddenly I will be at home. You may not remember anything on the way. Again it is just happened to me and purely my experience.

I basically took all of the following in right way and following it

  • Helmet (am wearing helmet for past 23 years even from the period where there is no rule about wearing helmet)
  • Seat belts (before never do this, but recently start practicing, so will be doing this whether there is law or not)
  • Dark sun films (actually I feel now I have better visibility in nights, if it would have been removed earlier, i could have avoided a small accident which took place in a rainy day around 10 pm)

So in same way, I will take this also in right way. Even now a days I stopped talking over phone when am driving (if i get a chance like signal or something, I will try to communicate the caller that am driving and call them back) if necessary I will park and then talk.

All of you fail to see that we are a super developed country where we have rules that even the west doesn't have. Mercedes audi bmw etc are allowed by their countries to sell hands free systems in their cars. We allow this as well but you are not allowed to use it without getting caught unless of course you are a person on a higher level than the aam aadmi, like for instance you have to be in a corruptible occupation. Then the law takes a dramatic change. You may talk with the phone to your ear, your window panes maybe blacker than black seat belt or wearing helmets are not needed to be worn and if by chance the police notice you, they will salute. This only happens in India.

I want to mention couple of more points -

First why is ARAI/RTOs permitting sale of cars with OEM BT ICE set up ?

Second , personally I restrict myself of having as less as possible calls during driving. I take only incoming calls which are important, do not make any outgoing calls and do no read any test messages. This is purely for personal and other road users safety.

Instead of banning ICE setups in car I would feel it would be better off to get a car driving license in the car with ICE and the test can be conducted with driver talking over BT on the phone. This way the driver can get certified that he will not be distracted when talking over phone(through BT) while driving.[roll]

Why not ban music systems and all creature comforts! The way the laws are being implemented the day is not far when driving cars will be prohibited to prevent accidents.

As per MV Act music system is not allowed in cars. Only Radio is allowed. That is why most modern day FM stations also give time to time traffic update. And I have seen this in other places of the world.

Caught driving while on phone will cost you your licence - rule would also apply to people taking calls on bluetooth through the car's entertainment system

Dude, even talking on Blue-5 systems??? THis is ridiculous [surprise]. Anyways, how would the police officer know if we are on a call on Blue-5 system? He cannot stop everyone to check whether we are on call or not. Hence this is for sure a failure law for Blue-5 systems and persons using Bluetooth handsfree on bikes.

This will only work when one of your hands is holding a mobile phone close to your ear while driving [lol] BTW, I use bluetooth handsfree even while driving my splendor.

I think Motor vehicle act stated that you are not allowed loud music inside your vehicle as it can be a source of distraction and nuisance. But it doesn't tell that music system aren't allowed. Correct me if I am wrong.
Radio stations give traffic updated to inform people that "take some other route in case of urgency if possible".

Yes, this is not practically possible. For a city like Bangalore where vehicles of 10 lanes goes in 1 rather 1/2 lane, stopping one car can jam the route for hours together. But for press statement, he has to say so right?

Even it's a Hands Free Bluetooth device, using that while riding is not permissible, at least as a TAIger [:)]
