I do not wish to say this for Evo-X, but to be true; Mitsubishi has yet again repeated the same mistake, and priced this car quite optimistically. We are uncertain, why? For the similar price range, wouldn’t one love to be seen driving around in an Audi TT or even a Nissan 370Z (!!) which are equally powerful and also offer the brand value justified for the price tag. I sure would, but of course, this is applicable only if we keep aside clothing of sedan factor, which the Evo comes in.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X

Mitsubishi has launched the much-anticipated Lancer Evolution X, or EVO X as it is popularly known. Powered by a 295PS turbocharged 2.0L gasoline engine paired to a twin-clutch automatic transmission and intelligent all-wheel-drive, it is a formidable creation by any standards; and is God-like to any rally enthusiast. Myself included.

I was more than happy to be invited to the launch in Pune, especially because this was not just a new car launch, but a new dealer launch as well. Apart from J.Williams & Co., Pethkar Motors is the second dealer for Mitsubishi for areas in and around Pune. Having met the managing director personally, I am pleased to let it be a known fact that he is indeed one of the finest individuals I have had the pleasure of meeting.

The launch was a high-key event at one of the best 5-stars in town. I impatiently waited as the guests and various dignitaries entered and took to their seats. Post the opening ceremony and a flashy dance number, the 2 litre turbo 4 rumbled to life, the xenon lights turned on, piercing the curtains, and my sight (as I had in my anciety claimed the closest seat to the stage available). With a whine of the twin-scroll turbo echoing in my brain, I beheld the EVO X! (A car which happens to be my 5th favorite in the world).

Of course, it's not a new car per se. But it is new to our market, and those who have been through the details post it's international launch will be familiar with the specs it brings to the table. I shall be brief in my overview of the key aspects.

Design

The EVO X is a handsome car to behold. It's sleek lines and curves give it an aggressive stance, with a larger air dam up front shamelessly allowing see-through glances of the large intercooler. Of course, the only thing larger than that which grabs your attention is the gigantic rear wing that sits pretty on the boot. Of course, with a car of this performance level and power-to-weight ratio, it plays a much larger role than just a looks enhancer.

Comfort

On the inside, the EVO is surprisingly comfortable. The leather+suede Recaro™ seats offer a sculpted seating position and when you do seat yourself, you sink into what feels like a personalised cocoon. This of course, is assuming you don't battle morbid obesity. But yes, once seated, you can finally take in the layout, the fine detail and the crafted controls abound. No, the seat isn't cushy, it is quite firm; but this doesn't seem too apparent after spending a few minutes in it. The leg room and head room are good. Visibility is good as well. At the rear, the seats are far more comfortable than I anticipated, with space levels also a fair amount more than expected.

Driveline

Powering this beast, is the an evolution of the fantastic turbo-petrol 2 litre motor Mitsubishi is famous for - the 4B11 MIVEC Twin-scroll Turbo version. With 294 horsepower and over 37 kgm of torque at a relatively low engine speed, it delivers seamless power across the rev range. The transmission for India is the 6-speed Twin-Clutch Sequential Shift Transmission (TC-SST) unit which delivers lightning-fast responses with no noticeable drop-off in power thanks to alternate gears on separate input shafts. There's also the 3 options available for the transmission - Normal, Sport and S-Sport. Of course, the fun lies in sticking to Sport and playing with the paddles that let you freely rev the engine to it's redline. The power is fed to the wheels through the S-AWC - Super All-Wheel-Control. The renowned Active Stability Control, Active Yaw Control and Active Centre Differential make handling a breeze, even at hitherto unimaginable speeds.

Footwork

To harness the full potential of that fire-breathing engine, Bilstein™ shock absorbers with Eibach™ springs provide a fine-tuned ride. The finest Dunlop™ 18" 245/40 radials adorn those magnificent BBS™ alloys and provide phenomenal levels of grip no matter what the terrain. Of course, the warranty policy dissuades any experiments in this regards. But more on that later..

The EVO X is a magnificent car and opinions aside, only those who truly desire it, will go ahead and procure it. Of course, Mistubishi does offer genuine prospecta a test drive, but that entails a quick flight to Chennai where a private track awaits. Of course, this is done at the dealer's expense. I haven't really driven it on the open road myself, hence the brief overview, but this writeup should prove useful if you want an insight into the rally legend that is the Lancer EVO X.
