Isuzu might be working on a fully electric version of the D-Max, but before that arrives in 2025, the midsize pickup gained another electrified powertrain option. The Isuzu D-Max pickup and the closely-related MU-X SUV are now available with a new mild-hybrid diesel in Thailand, offering improved performance and fuel economy.
The mild-hybrid 2.2-liter turbodiesel, codenamed RZ4F, produces 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. Isuzu says that the engine is more quiet, featuring improved combustion and a variable turbocharger. However, the company didn’t disclose the specs of the 48V system’s electric motor and battery.
The 2.2 Ddi MaxForce is exclusively mated to a new eight-speed torque converter automatic, contributing to the performance and efficiency gains. According to the official website, the mild-hybrid has 56% more torque at startup and 10% better fuel economy compared to the base non-electrified diesel.
The power output and torque figures of the new powertrain place it right in between the engines of recently facelifted D-Max and MU-X models. The base 1.9-liter makes 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS) and the flagship 3.0-liter is good for 187 hp (140 kW / 190 PS) – mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed auto.
The electrified versions of the Isuzu D-Max and MU-X will go on sale in Thailand on November 28. The starting price of the mild-hybrid D-Max ranges between THB 595,000-937,000 ($17,200-27,000) depending on the trim and bodystyle, while the MU-X starts from THB 1,194,000 ($34,435).
Isuzu didn’t get into details about availability in other markets, which are expected to follow in the near future. Rival midsize trucks with electrified powertrains include the mild-hybrid Toyota Hilux and the plug-in hybrid Ford Ranger.
Isuzu‘s “multi-pathway” strategy until 2030 includes the development of new technologies for combustion engines, BEVs, and FCEVs, offering different options based on the region. The fully electric D-Max coming in 2025 will be the automaker’s first production EV.
