MG Motor India has taken the wraps off the Cyberster in our country for the first time and confirmed that it will be introducing a new network of premium outlets for its more upmarket offerings. While the Chinese-owned British brand has yet to confirm which models will be sold from these new premium showrooms, the Cyberster is a likely candidate. The EV is MG’s first-ever electric sportscar and is set to go on sale in international markets later this year.

MG Motor had revealed the drop-top EV back in 2023, with two battery pack and motor options. The entry-level model gets a 64kWh battery with a claimed range of 520km, which powers a single rear axle-mounted 308hp motor. The range-topping Cyberster has a 77kWh battery pack, which has a CLTC-rated range of 580km, and powers two electric motors making a combined 535hp and 725Nm of peak torque. This helps the 1,985kg dual-motor AWD variant sprint to 100kph in 3.2 seconds.

The rival to the next-gen Porsche 718 line-up (which will have all-electric versions) is larger than the current Boxster by a narrow margin. It measures 4,533mm in length, 1,912mm in width and 1,328mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,689mm.

For details on the MG Cyberster’s interior highlights and exterior design, check out our exclusive that confirmed the all-electric convertible will be showcased in India. MG Motor is expected to reveal prices for the Cyberster in international markets by mid-2024. The brand claims it an “affordable” sportscar with a likely starting price of around GBP 50,000 (Rs 53 lakh approx), which is quite reasonable even by Indian standards.

For reference, BYD recently brought in the Seal EV to India – in dual-motor AWD configuration it has 530hp, a 82.56kWh battery and up to 580km of range (NEDC) – with prices ranging between Rs 41 lakh-53 lakh, ex-showroom, India. If MG Motor India decides to launch the Cyberster here, the BYD Seal, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 will be among its rivals.

MG Motor has also brought the 4 EV hatchback and the 5 EV estate to India for the event. Both models were showcased at Auto Expo 2023, and share a number of styling cues. While the smaller 4 gets 51kWh and 64kWh options, with WLTP ranges of 350km and 452km, respectively, the larger 5 is powered by a 61.1kWh battery that has a claimed range of 402km.

JSW MG Motor India has announced its maiden luxury car, the MG Cyberster, claiming it to be the world’s fastest MG roadster. The car is part of the company’s new MG Select brand channel, which aims to redefine luxury motoring in India.

The MG Cyberster draws its inspiration from the iconic MG B Roadster of the 1960s but modernises it with cutting-edge technology and futuristic design elements. The car merges heritage and innovation, combining speed, performance, and tech-forward features to create a new benchmark for roadsters.

The MG Cyberster promises lightning-fast acceleration and precision handling, offering a high-performance driving experience. Its sleek silhouette and scissor doors contribute to a bold, futuristic appearance, while its design pays homage to MG’s legacy in motoring history.

The MG Cyberster is part of the larger MG Select initiative, a new brand channel created by JSW MG Motor India. MG Select aims to offer exclusive luxury experiences for customers, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and performance. The initiative includes exclusive experience centers in 12 cities across India, designed to provide luxury car buyers with curated experiences in line with the brand's commitment to modern technology and eco-friendly mobility solutions.

Speaking on the launch, Gaurav Gupta, chief growth officer of JSW MG Motor India, emphasised the car’s ability to merge the timeless appeal of classic roadsters with the latest in automotive technology. “Growing up and even today, many of us dream of owning a sleek sports car — the kind that makes your heart race, your hair fly in the wind, and lets you relive the romance and thrill we have all seen in iconic movies and on racetracks. The MG Cyberster brings that dream to life... It encapsulates the thrill and charm of a bygone era while appealing to the discerning tastes of new-age luxury customers in India,” he said.

As part of its growth in the luxury market, JSW MG Motor India is positioning the MG Cyberster as a premier option for those seeking performance and luxury in the Indian automobile market. The launch of MG Select further strengthens the company’s commitment to redefining luxury for modern consumers.

MG Cyberster India-spec details revealed

JSW MG Motor India has officially revealed key details about its highly anticipated Cyberster electric sportscar. Scheduled for a January 2025 launch, the Cyberster will be available through MG Select, a new sales channel dedicated to the brand’s forthcoming line of "premium vehicles."

The MG Cyberster will be powered by a 77kWh battery pack (110mm thickness), paired with two oil-cooled motors on each axle, simulating an AWD setup. This powertrain produces 510hp and 725Nm of peak torque, with a claimed 0-100kph sprint time of 3.2 seconds. MG claims a maximum range of 580km on a single charge (CLTC cycle).

For enhanced traction and stability, the MG EV will be equipped with a front double wishbone along with a rear five-link independent suspension. High-speed stability is further helped by a 50:50 front and rear weight distribution.

Depending on the response, JSW MG may consider bringing the Cyberster RWD to India in the future.

The Cyberster draws inspiration from the MG B Roadster of the 1960s, featuring a soft-top, two-seater configuration. Notably, it debuts scissor doors on an EV with dual radar sensors and an anti-pinch mechanism for added safety. According to regulatory filings, the wheels are expected to be between 19 and 20 inches, reinforcing its sporty stance. Its rear haunches and side skirts also maintain a pronounced look. At the back, a connected LED strip spans the width of the car, beneath which sit left- and right-arrow-shaped tail lights and an aggressive split diffuser.

Dedicated to NEVs (New Energy Vehicles) – including EVs, PHEVs, and hybrids – the MG Select outlet will initially bring four new products, which will be assembled locally. The Select channel will offer entry-luxury models and will be a standalone facility with workshops. MG plans to launch 12 Select experience centres across India in the first phase and gradually expand in a phased manner, eventually reaching Tier 2 cities.

MG Select Chief Growth Officer Gaurav Gupta earlier stated that the channel will be distinct from the existing MG Channel, which will continue as the mainstream brand, with no overlap between the two. “To begin with, we are looking at products that will help us put a stick in the ground in the entry-luxury space. We feel there’s a lot of opportunity to offer something fresh to the customer, and we will have a good mix of product, pricing, and experience,” he added. After the Cybertser, MG plans to bring the Mifa 9 MPV, which will also be showcased at the upcoming Bharat Mobility Expo.
