Maruti Suzuki is working to introduce the next-gen Swift in India by 2024. The recent spyshots confirm the same. New Suzuki Swift was showcased in an almost-production ready form at the recent Tokyo Motor Show.

New Swift is 15 mm longer, 40 mm narrower and 30 mm taller but retains an overall similar appearance as the existing model. Expect the car to receive a new 1.2L, three-cylinder naturally-aspirated Petrol motor.

Suzuki has officially launched the next-generation Swift hatchback in the Japanese market. The same hatchback is expected to come to India next year. While we await the new Swift’s arrival in India, here is a set of official images that have now surfaced online. Suzuki has announced that they will start selling the CVT models of the Swift from December, and for those who have opted for the manual version, the wait will be until January 14, 2024.

The exterior design of the 2024 Swift closely resembles the Swift Concept that Suzuki showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show a few months ago. The car’s design isn’t too different from the current version available in India; it’s actually an evolution of the existing design. However, the car in its new form looks sleeker and sharper. The headlamps are much sleeker, and the design of the LED DRLs is also different from the current ones. The turn indicator is positioned right under the LED DRL.

The redesigned front grille with a gloss black outline gives it a different look. The car also features a redesigned bonnet and bumper, flared fenders, and a floating design for the roof. At the rear, Suzuki offers a clear lens all-LED tail lamp unit with C-shaped LED elements. The 3D design of the tail lamps complements the overall design of the car.

Similarly, the interior of the 2024 Swift has been revamped. It now boasts a layered dashboard design with a 9-inch floating-type touchscreen infotainment system in the center. The Suzuki Swift also comes equipped with automatic climate control, fabric seat covers, a multi-function steering wheel, a color MID, and other features.

Suzuki will offer the Swift with a 1.2-liter, three-cylinder petrol engine tuned for both performance and fuel efficiency. A mild hybrid version of the Swift is also available in the Japanese market. The Indian version of the Swift will be launched with a strong hybrid system, becoming the first hatchback in the segment to offer this feature.

The Japanese version of the Swift also gets the AllGrip Auto feature, an AWD system that automatically engages when there is less traction. AWD has been offered in the Swift sold in the international market for a long time. In India, we only have the FWD version. Suzuki is also offering ADAS features like Dual Sensor Brake Support II (DSBS II), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Driver Monitoring System (DMS), Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), and eCall. Like most Suzuki cars in India and abroad, the new Swift also comes with Suzuki’s connected car features.

Regarding color options, Suzuki offers the new Swift in eight single-tone options and four dual-tone options, including new colors: Frontier Blue Pearl Metallic and Cool Yellow Metallic. Other color options for the new Swift are Flame Orange, Caravan Ivory, Pure White, Premium Silver, Star Silver, and Super Black. Suzuki also offers four dual-tone color options for the Swift: Frontier Blue/Black Roof, Burning Red/Black Roof, Cool Yellow/Black Roof, and Pure White/Black Roof.

Engine details

The Japanese market Swift boasts a 1,197cc, 12-valve DOHC engine generating 82hp at 5,700rpm and 108Nm at 4,500rpm. The available transmission is a CVT gearbox, and Suzuki offers a mild-hybrid variant that enhances performance with an additional 3.1hp and 60Nm of torque from a DC synchronous motor. Notably, the standard and mild-hybrid Swift models exhibit fuel efficiency figures of 23.4kpl and 24.5kpl, respectively, based on the WLTP cycle.

The new Z12E engine, designed for the Swift, prioritizes robust pulling power at the lower end of the rev range, distinguishing it from the free-revving nature of the current K12 engine. While the K12 engine in the existing Swift, a four-cylinder 1,197cc unit, produces 90hp at 6,000rpm and 113Nm at 4,400rpm, the Z12E aims for enhanced volumetric efficiency and torque.

I don't think the Swift will have any mild hybrid tech. The leaked pictures of the Swift at the showroom look like the ZXI+ variant with 16-inch alloys, just like the international version. There's no hybrid badge at the rear either. So, I reckon it's just a Swift with a 1.2 3-cylinder engine and a 5-speed AMT.

New Swift 100kg lighter than first-gen: Maruti's CV Raman

20240527023437_Swift x CV Raman Web.001_1.jpeg

When it comes to manufacturing cars, saving weight is a top priority, and nowhere is this journey better chronicled than in one of India's top selling car models, the Maruti Suzuki Swift. Over two decades, Maruti Suzuki has managed to shave off 100kg, says CV Raman, executive committee member and former CTO, Maruti Suzuki India.

“Since the launch of Swift in 2005, we have changed the powertrain and platform of the brand twice. With the new Heartect platform underpinnings, the fourth-generation model is the lightest yet,” said Raman in the keynote address at our sister publication, Autocar Professional’s Vehicle Lightweighting Conference.

Highlighting a massive reduction of 47 percent in carbon emissions, Raman said that the first-gen model used to emit 147g CO2 per km, which has now come down to 95.6g per km. “The fuel efficiency of the new model has improved by 50 percent. We have been able to achieve this by making use of lots of alternate materials in manufacturing,” he added.

In his presentation, Raman revealed how new grades of steel like Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS) and Ultra High-Strength Steel (UHSS) are helping car manufacturers usher in an era of robust, lightweight vehicles that improve fuel efficiency and lower emissions without compromising on safety. “We have improved the usage of AHSS and UHSS in structural parts as they have significantly higher minimum tensile strengths. While we have enhanced the share of UHSS and AHSS from 6 percent to 17 percent and 2 percent to 4 percent, respectively, in the current [Swift], the share of HSS has been reduced to 23 percent from 42 percent,” Raman revealed.

By using fewer materials, lightweighting strategies play a key role in making manufacturing processes more sustainable. Raman also underlined that automakers are exploring lighter materials beyond steel to lower the weight of automobiles. “Even though automobiles used to be exclusively made of steel, manufacturers are now shifting to aluminium, the most rapidly developing lightweight material, as well as magnesium and thermoplastic materials that provide higher efficiency and crash performance,” Raman mentioned.

According to market research firm Spherical Insights, the global automotive lightweight materials market was valued at USD 72.16 billion (about Rs 6 lakh crore) in 2022, and it is expected to reach USD 137.8 billion (Rs about 11.5 lakh crore) by 2032, the firm noted.

On the EV front, Raman said that the role of electrification in meeting fuel economy and emissions regulations is still evolving. According to him, the lightweight concept plays a pertinent role in the domain of electric vehicle energy conservation, as lighter vehicles translate to comparatively less energy consumed under the same conditions. “The increased demand for EVs has compelled manufacturers to look for innovations in battery size and newer lightweight materials,” he added.
