Re: My Maruti 800 AC - Ownership Review

Hi,
I have fitted Subros A/c in my maruti 800 in 2005 (my car is a carb 2001 model) with MASS. Its working fine, However I'm planning to go for an upgrade with a new Subros AC since I'm getting a good deal on the upgrade (offered @ a diff of 8-9K by the AC guy)
Make : Subros (I guess its 60CC)
Model : 2005
Gas : R134a
Is there any advantage of going for a new Subros Kit with an additional cost of 8-9 K since the AC mech said the old Subros compress @60CC has only 450 pounds of suction while the new one comes with a lot of technology improvement @83CC has 850 pounds of suction which will make a huge difference in cooling (offourse with a 120watt Radiator fan).

Experts Could you Please validate this and advice if there has been a real technology advancement in Subros AC's for M800 from 2005 to 2013.

If the AC already cools fine. May be you can spend that 8-9k in some other modification, as many things can be done in M800. Just a suggestion.

I would suggest you, NOT TO UPGRADE if there is no problem. The cooling capacity will increase by the new kit, but load on engine will increase. Which will result in low pickup and low fuel economy. 60CC compressor serves the purpose fine.

Could you pls check the below url and let me know if you are referring below valve in the change process

How To Convert Your Vehicle's A/C System From R12 to R134a with the IDQ Retrofit Kit - YouTube
And the below attachment shows my M800(2008) model's AC Valve where we refill the gas. So if this 2008 model's AC runs with R12(need to confirm from others whether my 2008 model has R12 or R134a), then for R134a the valve needs to be replaced for retro-fitting. But this R12 valve doesn't seems like removable. Its kind of single piece along with the pipe.

@Kiruba,
Bro your 2008 model car holds r134a for sure so nothing to worry.
The cost on conversion includes the valve, the gas, the cleaning labor and the filter which varies from 6500 to 8500 depending on the AC service station.
I do not know which kit they are using may the same mentioned kit or some other similar one.
The AC do not chill just by converting, the system has to be cleaned properly and for that i thing we need a professional support.

The top cap on that valve is removable.

There are two lines one should have the letter H and one should have the letter L on it.

The gas is filled in the line with the L cap on it.

Please check your user manual the type of gas used is mentioned in there.

Cool. Thanks for letting me that my 800 already has R134a, I was thinking mine is R12. And by the way, my car's cooling is upto its standards from day1 to till date(last week my car mechanic checked the AC and said its Fine). But the problem is that cooling standard is not sufficient for Chennai's heat. So, still my search is on for a better cooling. Probably increase in engine CC would be the only solution.

@jarpickel- Yes , as you said, the top cap is removable. And I checked the manual book. It says nothing about AC specs and refrigerants used. Its just says on how to operate. Anyways, alexddas just posted that my 800 is already equipped with R134a refrigerant. So search goes in different direction now.

There should be a sticker in the engine compartment that says which gas is used.Mostly on the radiator.

Hi Kiruba, As mentioned in all above posts all 800's post 2002 came with R134a Gas.
If needed I will put up a pic of R12 systems pic.

Get the condenser cleaned (get it washed from outside with pressure water), also the blower unit and cooling coil. This will help you.

There will be no difference when the engine CC(power) is increased, since the compressor CC (power is fixed). 800 comes with 60 - 65 compressor. Please correct me if I am wrong.

If you have a thermometer, please check the grill temp (Ac Vents) it should be around 8 - 10 deg C in 800.

Also check if you are able to find bubbles in drier tank (pic attached above, you will find a small glass). If yes, then you need to fill up gas.

Can we clean it by self????

Is it possible to change the compressor to a bigger CC???

I have checked this. There wasn't any bubbles in it. And sorry for late reply.

I did a work around for my AC, by sticking a 3M 70 sun film to my windshield and a dark one at the back. I believe i could see some difference in chillness, as when i drive the main heat entry would be through windshield, when its restricted , i feel better.

Varun, Can a fan fitted in front of the condenser to improve cooling effect?

Hi mahilaljayanath sorry for the delayed response. If your car is a std model you can go for the fan which comes with a/c model.

As there is no space to fit a fan in front of the condenser.

Why not try adding a bigger blower motor (in terms of wattage)..
