The Mahindra Thar Roxx 5-door SUV has been officially revealed by Mahindra. It is one of the most anticipated car launches of 2024 and takes the story forward, four years after the new-generation Thar 3-door SUV was showcased on August 15, 2020, four years ago. The Thar Roxx (yet to get used to the name) aims to draw potential customers with its robust appeal, enhanced practicality and a significantly longer list of features compared to the Thar 3-door. The base petrol model is priced at ₹ 12.99 lakh and the base diesel model is priced at ₹ 13.99 lakh. Prices for the mid and top-spec variants will be revealed tomorrow.

it is evident that Mahindra has changed things much further away from how the audience expected them to be. The rear quarter glass is triangular to accommodate a thicker B-pillar. While it looks quite appalling on the hard-top trim, it could give the Thar Roxx a seductive silhouette when it plans to go topless. Also, the Thar Roxx features a slanted roof, which is inviting not-so-pleasing opinions on the internet. The design for the alloy wheel is fresh, as opposed to the three-door model. In addition, the circular rear wheel arches of the outgoing model are now replaced with squarish wheel arches.

The Thar Roxx is just a couple of days away from its official launch. But it seems like Autocar India has their hands on some official Thar documents, which reveal the SUV's specifications. They report that the Mahindra Thar Roxx will get two engine choices - 2.0L turbo-petrol and 2.2L turbo-diesel. The petrol will be offered in two guises - 160 Hp and 170 Hp. The oil burner too, will be sold in two states of tunes - 132 Hp and 171hp. Also, there will be two transmission choices - 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT.

The 5-door iteration of the Thar will come equipped with a more advanced suspension setup than the outgoing 3-door model. It will utilise Scorpio-N-derived FSD shock absorbers with a penta-link suspension setup on the rear. Also, it will feature an electronic brake-locking differential on the front and a mechanically locking rear differential. Moreover, there will be a low-ratio transfer case with a lever, just like the Thar 3-door. The list will include an offroad crawl control and an intelli-turn assist feature. As for the numbers, the breakover angle now stands at 23.6 degrees, the approach angle at 41.3 degrees, and 36.1 degrees of departure angle. Also, it will have a water-wading depth of 650 mm.

In theory, it will go up against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny, but there is no direct rival to the Thar Roxx, which stands in a segment of its own.

This vehicle has its own character, does not have any competition or comparable model and looking into its pricing , people buying in the Crete Seltos range find extra choice and at the same time will get more powerful 2/2.2 litre engine better build , high stance seating ladder frame chassis albeit with a bumpy ride and not as smooth as the monocoque’s.

Mahindra Thar Roxx 4x4 prices revealed, starts at Rs 18.79 lakh

Mahindra has revealed the prices for the 4x4 variants of the Thar Roxx, which start at Rs 18.79 lakh for the MX5 MT and go up to Rs 22.49 lakh for the AX7 L AT. The 4x4 configuration is available only with the diesel engine, while the petrol variant only gets a 4x2 setup.

The prices for the Thar Roxx’s 4x2 variants were revealed last month, which range from Rs 12.99 lakh to Rs 20.49 lakh. This means that the 4x4 versions are priced about Rs 1.8-2 lakh higher than the equivalent 4x2 variants, but other than the 4x4 tech, they share the same equipment and safety kit. The lifestyle SUV’s pricing overlaps with the Thar 3-door (Rs 11.35 lakh-17.60 lakh) and the Scorpio N (Rs 13.85 lakh-24.54 lakh).

Mahindra is offering the Thar Roxx 4x4 with a sole 2.2-litre diesel engine that puts out 175hp and 370Nm of peak torque. Meanwhile, the diesel 4x2 variants are powered by the 152hp and 330Nm versions of this engine. The five-door SUV gets Mahindra's '4XPLOR System', which includes an electronic locking differential and terrain modes – Snow, Sand and Mud.

In addition, 4x4 variants also get a 'Smart Crawl' and a 'Intelliturn' feature. The former is a off-road cruise control system that can be activated between 2.5kph and 30kph. The latter allows the Roxx to make extremely tight turns by locking the rear inner wheel based on the steering direction. This feature operates at speeds under 15kph and can only be activated for up to 15 seconds.

The Thar Roxx is also available with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that makes 162hp and 330Nm with the manual gearbox, and 177hp and 380Nm torque with the automatic. Both engines get a 6-speed manual gearbox along with an optional 6-speed torque converter automatic.

The Mahindra Thar Roxx directly goes up against the Force Gurkha 5-door and Maruti Jimny. However, it also gives competition to monocoque mid-size SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Honda Elevate, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, MG Astor, Skoda Kushaq, and Volkswagen Taigun.

All prices, ex-showroom, India
