well, the canon 1100D is a good option as a entry level camera. But I personally think the Nikon D3100 is better than the canon 1100D.
My brother owns Canon 1100D. He bought it just around 2 weeks before & its pretty good IMHO. He had Nikon D3100 also in mind but chucked it when he got a offer of 20k with lens (don't remember which one) on it. [:)]
He got Canon E1100D at 20K[surprise]. Thats too cheap buddy, excellent deal i must say!
BTW as of now, i am more inclined towards Nikon D3100.

Sorry, but what i read in the Nikon D3100 review, it doesnt have auto-focus motor? What does this mean?
SLR camera consists of 2 parts - 1) the camera body 2) compatible Lens

D3100 camera body does not have a auto-focus motor. So it will have to be fitted with a lens that has auto-focus motor in-built. When fitted with a lens that has auto-focus motor in-built, the camera will auto-focus, using the motor in the lens, without any problem. Most of nikon or 3rd party lens have auto-focus motor in-built

What I meant was that the 18-55mm lens, that comes with D3100 camera body as its kit lens, has auto-focus motor in-built. So you won't have any problem with the auto-focus.

Thanks for the precise description.

Yeah, it is coming with 18-55mm lens. I was in confusion whether the mentioned lens has autofocus motor or not. Your post has cleared my doubts.

Now what i can safely conclude is, the major drawback of Nikon which i assumed initially, is gone, so that makes Nikon stronger contender. Anybody using either of these cams? I would love to see a shot of it[:)].

Akash, I have used the Nikon 3100 very very extensively. I would say its a good camera. Somehow i find all Canons unfathomable.
One more thing buddy, since you have used the camera, i would like to know how is its battery back-up. I have heard that its battery doesnt last long. Is it true?

Hey Akash I am looking to also hijack your thread for a similar requirement of a DSLR , dont mind please.[;)]
Folks please suggest a decent one, i am mostly looking for canon EOS series 550, 600 or 650D or something like that with a good lens combination.
I think buying in the US (with international warranty) would still come cheaper than buying in india ?

There are many factors that impacts the battery life.

Here are some:

If you use your DSLR like a point and shoot - I mean, using the LCD live view instead of the view finder for framing.

Using certain Autofocus modes like AF-C

Spending more time browsing old photos on the LCD than taking photos

using flash a lot.

That said, Nikon battery life generally is pretty good. I have a D90 and never felt that the battery life was poor.

Ok, even the Nikon PnS camera which i use in office has decent battery back up, but in most of the website, i read about lesser battery backup of Nikon as compared to Canon, hence was a bit worried. Anyways the doubt is cleared.
Buddy, many thanks for your prompt response to each of my query, really appreciate.

yes, indeed, its an excellent deal.

IMO, I would suggest you Nikon d3100!
Thanks jihu, this boosts confidence.

An update, my sister got herself a Sony CyberShot DSC-HX10V. So sadly, i wont be able to gift DSLR to her.

But the great part is that i will be gifting it to myself[lol].
