It is known people in South East Asia are absolute workaholics. They can work upto 18-20 hours per day. This is my personal observation in handling project work from different geographies of the world in last 10 years.

If Japanese starts expecting same amount enthusiasm from Indian workers , I think they should be corrected. Maruti and Honda already tasted the threat, now its Toyota.

Toyota Kirloskar Motors production hampered due to labour unrest

Toyota Kirloskar Motors (TKM) is facing the biggest unrest in the production, even after resolving problems with the labour union and signing the 'good conduct' letter. The company is still asking labours to rejoin the production facility. It is almost 12 days since the plant reopened after the lockout and out of 4200 labour union employees only 300 of them returned to work. The company houses 6,400 blue collar employees out of which 4,200 are the members of the TKM Corporation Employees Union, remaining 2,200 are on contract agreement.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Ltd vice-chairman Satish Viswanathan commented:
"Our production has declined 50 percent to 350 cars from 700 cars a day, as the twin plants are operating in one shift with about 1,200 supervisors, technicians, apprentices and contract labourers,"
Toyota Kirloaskar Motor Ltd plant produced Etios sedan and Liva, the new Corolla Altis, Camry Saloon, Prado and Land Cruiser and the hot selling Innova MPV and Fortuner SUV. The list include both locally manufactures products and imported ones (through CKD or CBU). The plant is located in Bidadi industrial township, nearly 30km away from Bengaluru.

The Japanese manufacturer churned out 9,160 units in the month of March which is dramatically low compared to 19,000 units in the month of February. The pant has an annual production capacity of 310,000 units.

QDR is newly added to Toyota Web Site. QDR stands for Quality, Durability and Reliability. Now the Bidadi plant is partially functional due to supervisors, technicians, and engineers are taking responsibility of production. Someone was mentioning here that the products will be strong due to high profile people are behind the production. Lets wait and see the outcome in coming days.

Hunger Strike Continuing.

Where it is Heading?

A section of the workers have been on hunger strike since April 3, and the agitation has been on for two full weeks following a week-long lock-out. The main point of contention here is the management’s insistence on workers signing individual “good conduct undertakings”, a document that the union continues to insist is against the spirit of collective bargaining. Further, the TKM management had, during the lockout, handed out a total of 30 suspensions (pending enquiry) which the union has opposed. The TKM statement also condemns the lack of intervention by the state government.

Karnataka labour department calls Toyota officials and workers for a meeting

The Karnataka labour department has called for a meeting with Toyota’s management and the company’s workers union. The workers union, yesterday, had declared a relay fast to protest against the company and that seems to have led to this development.

The labour department had called for a meeting on Monday, which was postponed to April 10 as Toyota’s management wanted time said Satish R, general secretary of the employees union.
“We had written a letter to the labour department on March 24 saying that a lockout situation was continuing because of the conditions set by the management. The meeting was in response to that.”

“We have decided to go on a relay fast from Tuesday,” said Satish. Around nine union members, who were on hunger strike, had been hospitalised on Sunday evening but have since recovered, he added.
Toyota claims its production levels are down by half of its installed capacity of 700 units per day. The waiting period for their cars has extended to about 45 days from 25 before.

Toyota may be launching the Etios Cross on May 7, bookings for which began in February. The company also has the Corolla Altis sedan lined up for a mid-year launch. About 1,200 supervisory staff, 800 apprentice staff and 400 contract labourers are working in the assembly line to keep the production going.

Still going on

The production is affected. Strike is still going on. Staffs are not willing to give good conduct certificate.

The Karnataka government has asked both the management and the union of Toyota Kirloskar Motor to restore normalcy in operations, seeking to end an over monthlong stalemate between them.

"The government, in order to maintain industrial peace and harmony, has issued an order asking it and the union to restore normalcy in operations immediately," the company said in a statement issued on Saturday.

All relevant issues between the workers and the management have been referred for adjudication. We thank all our stakeholders for their support and understanding during this difficult period," Toyota Kirloskar said.

Toyota workers at Bidadi plant returned to work. Seems that the dispute dissolved without any gain to anyone.

Japanese carmaker Toyota said employees at its strike-hit complex in southern India returned to work Tuesday, ending a five-week standoff.

Unionised employees had refused to go back to their jobs at the twin plant complex near high-tech hub Bangalore following an end to an eight-day company lockout last month, amid a dispute over pay and other issues.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private Ltd is the Indian unit of the world's biggest carmaker.

"All the workmen have returned to work and things are returning to normal," a company spokesman said.
