- Front Door Component: You can go fo JBL GTO series or Infinity speaker...would cost you around 4-5k. For a higher budget i would suggest, go for Focal/Morel. I personally have morel and i can personally vouch for its audio clarity.

- Tray: i would suggest you JBL GTO 949. Its one of the best in the range.

- Amp: JBL GT-X series, on a higher range HERTZ 4 CHANNEL AMPLIFIER HE series. You can also go for Alpine or kenwood amps. A good amp will cost you around 8-10k

Wiring- Don't compromise with wiring quality. It is one of the most imp part of the system. Also do get the dampings done in the door.

If you are retaining ur old unit, you can check for RCA splitter for your 4-channel amp.
Hello adi85, first of all, thanks for your reply.[:)]

Let me give you a glimpse of the system I have at this moment. Currently I have alpine HU (refer the attached pic, stock looks), 2 JBL components (GTO I believe) in front door, 2 polk audio coaxials in the rear one and 2 polk audio 3 way 6X9 in the tray area, a rockford fosgate P1 series woofer and a 4 channel amp (luckily JBL GT X646 [cheers]). So I guess RCA splitter is already available, and I already got the speaker area damped in all the door around 8 months ago. Should I opt for complete door damping?

The basic reason behind changing the setup is the lack of boot space, due to woofer.
As a temporary solution, I used to remove my woofer & drive, but I am fed up of doing the same every alternate week & in case of permanent solution this is definitely not good (keeping the same setup w/o woofer) as it wont give a good bass effect.
That's why I was planning to sell off everything, but now after some online research, discussions with friends & after reading your response, only the rear door & tray speakers along with the woofer, is available for sell.
Also, just yesterday, I got to check a pair of JBL GTO 949's running directly through KENWOOD double din HU in my friend's Octavia, and I really liked it (nice bass), so now am looking for something better than that (if any) in the similar price range.
How about GTO 950SI??? Its available online for almost 3-4K after discounts.

Also, I would request for your opinion about the cost & the brand in case of wiring, as current wiring is of not so good quality & almost 5 year old.

Thanks.

Hey Rohit,

You already had a good setup, but i understand the frustration of removing woofer every now and then.

GTO 950 SI and 949 are both for parcel tray and 950 is a successor of 949 with 25watt RMS more ouput. It is definitely better and also ur amp should be able to use the power 950 can provide.
Bass should be good enough but you can't compare it to the sub-woofer setup.

Full door damping will bring minor improvements and will not be needed if all the gaps are covered properly around the speakers.

What are you planning to do with rear door? Will you go for a component speaker there too?

Regarding the wiring, Go for JBL kit if you don't have it already and Monster or Kicker RCA. Use Fuse Box definitely.

Hi Adi,

In last 2 years, the woofer was hardly used for 35-40% of time and for the rest, it was simply lying under my bed. Therefore I think whatever the bass effect I can have with new tray speakers, that would be good enough for my daily driving, though, I completely agree that the same can’t be compared with a subwoofer. But if I can get my hands on a good pair, I believe that would fulfill my &/or my co-passenger’s occasional requirements.

Since I might sell off the car within a year or so, I don’t think I should be investing for anything other than a pair of 6X9’s and a decent wiring kit, for that reason, no favors for the rear doors. Also, as I am planning a road trip in coming December, IMO, this seems better, as I would be able to save a little cash with the planned setup (Also, remember “the available boot space[:)] w/o the woofer”). Thus, the complete setup would include the HU, 4 channel amp, a pair of JBL components on the front doors and a pair of 6X9 3 way speakers on the tray. That’s all.

Regarding wiring kit, I will check in the local market for the availability, cost & impact of each brand with regards to the safety & the sound quality. Can you please help me to understand the importance of the fuse box or any other device, which I should consider from the safety point of view? Also, currently my amp is powered directly from battery terminals; is it hampering the performance or life of the amp in anyway? Would you recommend switching to “REMO” from the HU?[confused]

Thanks.

Update: Bought JBL GTO 950si (500w) through an online portal, paid almost 3.2k INR for the pair & paid 400 INR for installation at a local accessory shop (was planning for a DIY session but…). Though the guy did not adjust the amplifier properly, that was done at home on the same day.
HU was switched on and different types of songs were tried, like R&B, hard-rock, soft-rock, classical, etc…and boy oh boy, these speakers turned out to be really good with almost all of them. One can hear the lower as well as the higher frequencies without any distortion. Just to give you an idea, it can make your rear view mirror vibrate on the beats of the song you are playing. Sometimes, the bass is so much that I need to reduce the bass input through my HU or make use of the fader and this is where the front components play their part.
FYI: Comment from few friends of mine “They sound better than Kicker CS series speakers.”[:D]
But please note, sure it cannot replace a woofer, but it’s almost there. When it comes to bass, the difference between a woofer & these speakers is almost like 19-20 (provided you don't want to feel the vibrations in the car next to yours).
Long story short, I am quite satisfied with these. And yes, now onwards I can enjoy my drives (short or long) with the boot to be filled only by the luggage of mine and not with the woofer. Feels good [clap]
Will I recommend it to anyone? Definitely yes (Already did).
Score: 8.5/10
