So it comes down to what you are driving. if you drive a high-powered one, shift range changes, but for the average hatch, it should be the range I mentioned.
@Thenali, When you say 2000 is the ideal RPM, I assume you say it by your experience with SPARK. Being a Sparky owner, I would like to know what will be your RPM when you are cruising between 90-100 or above 100. Mine shows something like 2800 or more. Is that okie? can it be a cause of low FE?
Just a thought,
If you dont "race" your engine, you should be at lower RPMs.
By that, what I mean is, pick the speed up slowly and reach 100, you should be seeing lower RPMs than when you race and reach and maintain that speed.

Dear Sethumurugan,The Ideal RPM for spark is not exactly 2000,but it is in the range of 1500 to 2500,it is my experience with my spark, read somewhere in a auto forum(i coundn't remember where) and many of the petrolheads have also suggested a range of 1500 to 2500RPM is ideal range for driving small cars for better mileage. I have suggested 2000RPM for upshifting gears, becuase if you are shifting at a lower RPM the engine will be strained and in turn it will result in more consumption of fuel.Nowadays,by following this pattern i am getting around 14kmpl(City with 50%AC) . Regarding cruising speeds above 80-90,it will not be good for mileage,as i have suggested, try to maintain RPM below 2500,because higher the RPM lower the mileage, also it is safe to drive speeds below 90kmph.
