in the civic, 5 can seat comfortably. the 5th guy wont be as comfortable as others but its not bad plus the 5th guy also has a seperate seat belt. :P

Almost all cars have the 5th seat belt. What makes the Civic comfortable is the lack of the centre hump. I think it's the same in the city.
But Peter that hump is also missing in my Estilo. So what is so special with Honda cars ?
4 peoples can sit comfortable (not 5) in any hatchback. In some hatch's like Vista and Liva have very good rear space but 3 at rear are difficult for long travel.
I think there is a thin line as to how many people can sit in a car and how many people can travel comfortably in a car.
Four of us, (A friend, his wife and my wife and me) went to Ooty on a 3 day trip in my Zen. I had to pull my seat a little to the front for the back seat drivers. We made it. I drove all the way. Could I drive in that position - Yes. Was I comfortable driving in that position - NO.
Five of us went to Chennai in my Manza. The two girls and a guy at the back were very slim. When I asked the girl sitting in the middle if she was comfortable she said yes.
While coming back there were only 4 of us. Two girls in the back. And the girl who was sitting in the middle on our onward journey commented "Wow, this is great, what comfort" with the rear armrest in position. Both the girls enjoyed the drive back.
Though the car can hold 3 people easily in the rear seat, the comfort level is meant only for 2.
I hope I have made my point clear.
Even in Punto and Swift, with the front seat pushed back I find it difficult to even get in, leave alone traveling. Even my old zen had a lapbelt for the middle seat. In some cars there are also 3 headrests.
Even in a bus which has a flat 3 seater, you will be comfortable if only 2 people are sitting. Of course 3 people can sit. But will all the 3 be comfortable?

In my Figo, 4 are comfortable and if I pull my seat little more towards dash, then the rear ones will be commmmmmmmmfffooooorrrrrtttttabbbbbbble. 5th one is OK just for short trips only or during inevitable situations.

Accent ,Linea,Fiesta 4 persons very comfortable for long journey for fifth person IMO firmly no.
Recently we had a long trip more than 600KMs one way in Ford Endeavour.
Few observations
Its third row is very bumpy and personal recommendation is for two people in third row
Three people in middle row and by default two at front row.

4 people can sit in utmost comfort in my WagonR k10 even if my seat is pushed maximum back. 5 is ok if one is slim. the max i went with 5 people was ~80km. they were ok. but the rear seats are little bit too angled.

we have traveled, 4 guys from kerala to chennai. space was surplus at rear and boys could even sleep with ones head on other's lap tough congested,thanks to non bouncy/non bumpy ,comfy ride of punto.
we were all average physic 170cm,68kg apprx.
