..& finally the Titanic brushed the iceberg.
Had been to Goa for a vacation with my wife. Nopes, taking the car for such a long trip was out of the question. Anyway, once in Goa, you get a lot of phone calls from people asking you to carry back booze for them. & I obliged to most of the requests.
So here i am, back in Mumbai. Decided to be a good delivery boy n drop off the bottles at their respective owners' place. Took the car as it was a rainy evening.
With just one delivery to go, we decided to get done with it and have dinner. Were famished.
Was nearing a friend's building when I took a steep right turn to enter the gates. Since it was a narrow lane, I was driving at a speed not more than 15-20kmph. Just as I took the turn, my side of the car suddenly went into a depression .. a trough dug-up by the municipal authorities and horrendously left without any warning sign or reflectors.
As my side of the car was almost inside the narrow part of the trough, I could hear screeching noises. I looked out and saw 4-5 reinforcement iron rods brushing heavily along my side of the car. My heart was in my mouth. It seemed like the earth had stood still. A friend who was sitting in the rear quickly got out of the car and tried to move the rods stuck to the side of the car and did so with great effort (along with the help of a few locals). The damage was done. He asked me to accelerate and get the car out. I was totally numb .. but managed to do so. With all hope lost, I got out of the car and saw there were 5-6 deep scratches running from the front to the rear tyre. That was it!!
Lost my appetite .. lost all hope. Luckily there were no dents .. and believe me, it was surprising. Today, I feel if it was a Maruti or a Chevy, the body would have suffered numerous dents and the metal would have been dislodged at multiple places.
Didnt sleep a wink that night. Took the car to my trusted local mechanic who told me he'd have to re-paint the entire side and it'd look as good as new after polishing. Without asking him any further Qs, I just gave him the key.
Y'day i got the car back, as good as new. My wallet was lighter by 4k, but the smile on the Brio was intact. And that's what mattered in the end.
A heavy incident. My fault .. not my fault. I dont know. Maybe the municipal authorities shud have been more careful considering the un-warned spot could even endanger pedestrians. I dont know. All I know is that m glad to have her back as she was.
P.S : I havent taken any photos to depict the same. The incident will forever be lodged in my memory .. tho I wouldnt want the photos to rub additional salt.
