Recently when we sent a mass E-Mail regarding The Automotive India’s new development series – A Proud TAI’ian, Iqbal Ahmed (ID: iqmodelverk) came up congratulating us and told about one of his well-engineered and fully functional projects - The 1:4 Scale Model of 1886 Benz Motorwagen. This is such a commendable project, that if I do not share about it here, it would make me feel as if The Automotive India is missing something really significant.
Lives in Nagpur, Mr. Iqbal Ahmed belongs to a family with mechanical background and of course, an evergreen interest in automobiles as bonus. His grandfather had a business in the insurance field which eventually expanded when insurance became compulsory for all automobiles. Now, he used to purchase the damaged cars and sell them off after complete refurbishment. While the repairs were performed by their hired mechanics, the little boy Iqbal carefully observed everything and this just worked as a catalyst to his inherent passion. Although, soon unfortunately the economical climate worsened and Iqbal had to sacrifice his schooling, so that he could assist in the business which was now being handled by his father. Yet, as they say whatever happens, happens for good. This drastic change in Iqbal’s life taught him some useful lessons of both, world and engineering. He was by now expertise enough to handle form of machining using 'Universal Machine' that allowed him to do drilling, milling, shaping and much more. The next revolution came in Iqbal’s life when one of his friends introduced him to the field of ‘Model Engineering’. One fine day, Iqbal with his curious and innovative brain decided to design a full-fledged downsized scale model of a steam powered locomotive.
Today, the scenario is that Iqbal is capable to design scaled down engines right from the scratch, using his own equipments and knowledge. He also loves to accept new challenges and work on them with pure dedication to maximum possible limits. The best part is, Iqbal Ahmed has become a renowned personality of our country for building “World’s Smallest Steam Engine” by his name being officially registered in Guinness Book of World Records. Apart of it, he also has been awarded several prizes up till now for his matchless skills in competitions such as Sherline Challenge Contest. And in fact, recently on 29th January 2011, in honour of World Automobiles Day, Mr. Ahmed was awarded by the Central India Vintage Automobile Association for constructing a marvelous model of first vehicle to be powered by an internal combustion engine. Personally, I would like to congratulate Mr.Iqbal and thank him for being a much valued part of The Automotive India family. We are extremely honoured to have company of such members, and if it was not his E-mail. I would have never come to know about the precious jewels that exist in our member list. The members who wish to ask anything related to Miniature Model Engineering may feel free to post right here in this thread, and Mr.Iqbal Ahmed will try answering the questions by spending out a few moments from his busy schedule.
PS: In case you too are talented with some skills related to autos – Please do let us know by E-Mailing on board[at]theautomotiveindia.com, so that we could help the best possible way to spread that word out there to the world.
