BEWARE OF FAKE VEHICLE RC !
A word of caution, please beware of fake vehicle Registration Certificates/Smart Cards.
The pre-owned vehicle buyer whether it is a CAR or BIKE need to be very careful with the RC that comes along with such vehicle.
The scam started spreading across the country and, now in Tamil Nadu.
Initially, the Vehicles registration certificate was in the form of a passbook wherein if the car was sold to a new buyer, he got the same RC with his name written on it once the RTO approved ; then this was replaced by paper RC and, then it is to plastic RCs which look like smart cards and have a chip or hologram.
Since there is no standard format of RCs all across the nation, there can be a confusion in recognizing the RC.
In every format, the fake ones started emerging.
THE SCAM EXPLAINED:
‘A’ buys a vehicle through loan from a financier, mostly a NBFC (Non-Banking Financing Corporation) – he failed to repay the dues- The Financier seizes the vehicle for auctioning- ‘B’ buys the vehicle.
The issue starts here: The RC would be on still ‘A’ name. The buyer ‘B’ purchase a fake RC (for almost @Rs.10000) from some agent, gets a loan clearance letter from the financier submits to RTO and gets a new RC.
Please note, the ‘A’ original owner of the vehicle who failed to pay dues is unaware of anything. The ‘B’ got the vehicle for an attractive lower rate as against prevailing market rate while auctioning does all these things.
The Innocent Buyer like us while purchasing from ‘B’ not bothered about previous ownership details as we get a good deal.
Unfortunately, many RTOs are not equipped with special scanner that can differentiate the fake from original. We will be in trouble if found later.
The image below (Courtesy: TheTimes of India, Coimbatore dated June,11,2022) would help common folks like us to differentiate the Real from Fake.
Read HERE for differentiating other type of formats.
