Have seen this video from media - thick smoke followed by fire emanating from an electric scooter (they call it as Pluto 7G)

No one knows the reason for the smoke and fire, but it looks terrible. There was a big crowd, but seems none trying to put off the smoke.

What could be the reason for this incident which I am reading first, time happening on an electric scooter.?

Video of Gwalior based Super Eco's X1 on fire surfaced on social media recently. The company blamed a Bangalore based third party battery vendor for the mishap.

The video is from Andheri in Mumbai and the scooter is X1 from little known Gwalior based firm Super Eco.

kq7kmqp8_ola-electric-catches-fire_625x300_26_March_22.jpg

In more troubling news for Ola Electric, a video of a Ola S1 pro scooter on fire has surfaced from Pune on Saturday. The company in a statement said that they are aware of an incident in Pune that happened with one of their scooters and are investigating to understand the root cause and would share more updates in the next few days.

It added, “We’re in constant touch with the customer who is absolutely safe. Vehicle safety is of paramount importance at Ola and we are committed to the highest quality standards in our products.

We take this incident seriously and will take appropriate action and share more in the coming days.” This is not the first time when an electric scooter has caught fire in India. Very recently, a person in Haryana lost his life due to an explosion in the lithium ion battery of a scooter sold by Gurugram-based HCD India.

e-Scooter explosion in Vellore kills father and daughter

E-Scooter.jpg

A father and his daughter were killed in an electric scooter explosion in Vellore on Saturday. The explosion took place while the duo was recharging the battery at their home.
According to a report on ABP Nadu, the deceased were identified as Durai Varma, who was a 49-year-old photographer and his daughter Mohana Preeti, a student of Tiruvannamalai Government school.

It all started when Durai Varma purchased an electric scooter in Tiruvanamalai two days back and was using the scooter. On Friday, as the battery was down, he tried to charge the scooter at his home along with daughter Mohana Preeti.

After charging the battery for a while, the duo once again came to see the scooter. However, the battery in the scooter suddenly exploded and the fire from the scooter immediately spread to two other vehicles. The duo who were standing nearby tried to escape the fire by running into their home. They then locked themselves in the bathroom. Yet, the fire spread across the home and within a few minutes both of them died due to asphyxiation.

The neighbours of the duo rushed to put out the fire but the blaze was uncontrollable, Hence, they called the Fire and Rescue Department for help. The personnel soon reached the spot and put out the fire.

The personnel then recovered the bodies of the duo and sent them to Tiruvannamalai Government Hospital for autopsy.

The police suspect that the explosion might have likely occurred due to overcharging of the batteries.

That’s unfortunate. May the departed souls RIP. It’s incidents like these which might affect the credibility of EVs in India which is still an emerging domain. That's especially at a time when e-Bikes are launching now and then by several new (and unknown) manufacturers. I’m curious what make and model it was?

Pure EV Electric Scooter Catches Fire In Chennai

90525120.jpg

In the fourth such incident of an electric scooter catching fire in India, another electric scooter, this time from Pure EV, caught fire on the outskirts of Chennai. The incident has once again raised concerns and added to the ongoing debate about the safety of electric vehicles. A short video shows thick smoke engulfing a red Pure EV electric scooter parked on the side of a busy road, as other vehicles pass by. This is the third such incident of fire in a Pure EV electric scooter.

The latest incident of an electric scooter catching fire follows three such cases since Saturday, March 26, 2022, when an Ola S1 Pro electric scooter caught fire in Pune. On the same day, another incident was reported from Vellore, where a fire in an Okinawa electric scooter led to the death of a man and his 13-year-old daughter. Another incident of a fire in an electric scooter was also reported earlier this week from Trichy in Tamil Nadu.

The government has already ordered a probe into increasing incidents of electric two-wheelers catching fire. On March 28, 2022, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways decided to depute a team of independent experts to investigate two incidents of electric two-wheelers catching fire. Ola Electric also announced its own investigation into the incident of its S1 Pro electric scooter catching fire in Pune. The increasing incidents of spontaneous combustion in electric two-wheelers has raised questions about thermal efficiency of lithium-ion batteries on electric vehicles. For an industry which has seen unprecedented growth in the electric two-wheeler segment over the last couple of years, these incidents are expected to raise concerns about quality and consumer safety.

Hero Electric scooter goes up in flames in Odisha, company says short circuit at plug socket caused the fire

FireShot Capture 003 - hero electric_ EV fire_ Hero Electric scooter goes up in flames in Od_ ...png
The incident has been reported from Odisha, where a Hero Electric Photon caught fire, while it was being recharged overnight. In its initial report, Hero Electric stated that this unfortunate incident happened due to a possible cause of short-circuiting at the socket. It is the first time that a scooter from Hero Electric has come under scrutiny due to the ongoing events of electric scooters catching fire.

The customer of the Hero Electric Photon has explained how this incident took place. After keeping his scooter on charge overnight, he heard abnormal cracking sounds. He then came to know that fumes were coming from the electric switchboard, where the scooter was kept on charge. When he reached the spot to switch off the mains, the scooter had already burnt from the rear, around the spot where the battery is placed in it.

A spokesperson from Hero Electric has responded by saying that a possible root cause of this unfortunate incident is the earth wires of the home and AC phase coming into contact with each other, which might have resulted in short-circuiting. He also added that Hero Electric has offered all the possible help to the customer for the replacement of the damaged parts on a cost basis while testing his scooter for roadworthiness.

Tata Nexon EV catches fire in Mumbai: Detailed investigation underway

Tata-Nexon-EV-Fire.jpg

A Tata Nexon electric SUV caught fire in Mumbai’s Vasai area yesterday. Videos of the same have gone viral on social media. As per a reader, the owner of the car had charged his Nexon EV with a normal slow charger installed at his office. After driving about 5 km in slow traffic commute towards his house, he heard clicky sounds from the car. Soon he was treated with flashes of warnings on the instrument cluster which made him park it at the side and get out.
Tata-Nexon-EV-Fire-1-768x432.jpg

Video shared by Twitter user KamalJoshi108, we can see firefighters spraying water on the burning Nexon EV. Even though a burning electric car can’t be doused with water, it can be beneficial in controlling the fire from spreading to the surroundings. EV fires take a longer time to douse, as individual cells are subjected to a chain reaction and will burn individually or in small clusters.

Okinawa electric scooter showroom in Mangaluru catches fire, several scooters destroyed

Mangaluru-Okinawa-showroom-fire-1536x902.jpg

In yet another setback to the electric vehicles industry in the country, an Okinawa electric scooter showroom in Mangaluru, Karnataka reportedly burnt down, destroying several scooters being showcased.
Okinawa_1656053461678_1656053491179.jpg

According to a report by Udayavani, an Okinawa dealership named Smart City Motors in Naguri, owned by a person named Hamid caught on fire during the early hours today.

Hamid lives above the showroom with his family and his wife was reportedly the first person to notice smoke emanating from the showroom around 7 am and alerted her son.

Soon after the fire was reported, fire service personnel reached the location and doused the fire. While the showroom has been gutted, fortunately, there have been no casualties.

Hamid’s son informed Udayavani that the main MCBs at their house tripped several times and they dismissed it, attributing it to power disruptions caused by rain.

Update at 5 pm - Okinawa has reached out to Business Insider India with an official statement about the incident.

"We are aware of an unfortunate fire incident at one of our showrooms in Mangalore this morning. As stated by the dealer, the fire was caused due to an electric short circuit. We are in touch with the dealership and we are extending all the necessary support. Safety is at the core of Okinawa Autotech and we want to assure that the highest standards of safety are maintained in our dealerships across the country," Okinawa said in a statement to Business Insider India.
