Okinawa recalls 3,215 units of Praise Pro EV

20220416080515_Okinawa_PraisePro.jpg
Electronic two-wheeler manufacturer Okinawa Autotech on Saturday announced that it will voluntarily recall 3,215 units of its Praise Pro scooters to fix any issues related to batteries with immediate effect.

According to the company, the recall is part of the comprehensive power pack health check-up camps, where the batteries will be checked for loose connectors or any other damage. Okinawa added that the batteries will be repaired free of cost at any of the company's authorised dealerships pan India. This is the first instance of a voluntary recall by any EV maker in India.

"The electric 2W maker is working closely with the dealer partners to ensure that the repair experience is as per the convenience of its customers, for which the vehicle owners will be contacted individually", Okinawa said, ANI reported citing NewsVoir

"This voluntary campaign is in the wake of the recent thermal incident and in line with the company’s long-standing commitment to customer safety," the company added.

The recall comes at a time when the e-scooter manufacturer is being investigated by a Central government agency over a recent incident of electric short circuit in one of their vehicles.

The fire claimed the life of a man and his 13-year-old daughter after the electric scooter went up in flames in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. The incident occurred in March. In another similar incident, Ola's Electric S1 Pro electric scooter caught fire in Pune.

A video showing the company's vehicle engulfed in flames has been widely circulated on social media with users raising questions over the safety standards of Ola's electric scooter.

Meanwhile, this is the second time an Okinawa e-scooter has caught fire. Last year, the video of a charred e-scooter of the company had surfaced online, however, no casualties were reported at that time.

Ola Electric recall announced for 1,441 Units of S1 Pro E-Scooters

Ola Electric is recalling 1,441 units of its electric two-wheelers in the wake of incidents of vehicles catching fire, according to a company statement. The company said its investigation into the fire incident on March 26, in Pune, is ongoing and a preliminary assessment found that it was an isolated one.

However, it said, “As a pre-emptive measure we will be conducting a detailed diagnostic and health check of the scooters in that specific batch and therefore are issuing a voluntary recall of 1,441 vehicles." Ola Electric further said, “These scooters will be inspected by our service engineers and will go through a thorough diagnostics across all battery systems, thermal systems as well as safety systems."

Ola Electric said its battery systems already comply with and is tested for AIS 156, the latest proposed standard for India, in addition to being compliant with the European standard ECE 136. Recently, there have been widespread incidents of electric two-wheelers catching fire in various parts of the country forcing manufacturers to recall their vehicles.

Toyota issues recall for its flagship electric SUV following concerns about wheels coming off

107080211-1656063431895-gettyimages-1238820802-JAPAN_TOYOTA_MOTOR.jpg

Japanese automotive giant Toyota issued a safety recall for more than 2,000 of its all-electric SUV, the bZ4X.
Announced Thursday, the recall relates to the bZ4X’s wheels. Toyota said owners of the vehicle would be notified through a variety of channels, starting June 23. Tokyo-listed shares of the company finished 0.7% lower on Friday.

“After low-mileage use, all of the hub bolts on the wheel of the subject vehicles can loosen to the point where the wheel can detach from the vehicle,” a spokesperson for Toyota said in a statement sent to CNBC via email.

“If a wheel detaches from the vehicle while driving, it could result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash,” they added.

According to the spokesperson, the recall is “for all bZ4X vehicles in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. Approximately, 2,700 vehicles are involved in this action.”

The cause of the issue remains under investigation. “No one should drive these vehicles until the remedy is performed,” the spokesperson said.

Toyota is well known for its hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles but is now attempting to make headway in the increasingly competitive battery-electric market, where firms like Tesla and Volkswagen are jostling for position.

“Toyota has been under pressure to up its game in EVs, so will be very disappointed that a recall has been necessary on its first mass-market electric cars,” David Leggett, automotive editor at GlobalData, told CNBC.com via email.

“On the plus side though, the recall is an early one in the model lifecycle and on a mechanical part that is nothing to do with the car’s electric powertrain,” Leggett added. “They’ll hope to quickly overcome the issue.”

Toyota launched the bZ4X in Japan last month, and it is the first model in the company’s bZ series. Last December, the company’s president, Akio Toyoda, said Toyota planned “to roll out 30 BEV models by 2030.”

TVS iQube recalled: Bridge Tube to be inspected on select 2023 models

tvs_iqube_recalled_chassis_break_complaint_from_customers_details_carandbike_1_1_a12da66d80.jpg

TVS has issued what it claims is a proactive recall for its popular electric scooter, the TVS iQube, manufactured between July 10, 2023 and September 9, 2023. This incidentally comes weeks after a social media post of a customer who claimed to have suffered a ruptured chassis on his iQube during normal usage and having spotted more such cases when he went to get it repaired at a local service outlet. In a statement, TVS in an official statement said the recall is voluntary for the said units to inspect the bridge tube and to 'ensure the vehicle's ride [and] handling is good over extended usage’. The manufacturer or its dealer partners will individually contact customers who are affected by this recall, and necessary replacement or repairs will be carried out at no cost to the owners. On its part, TVS has not clarified what prompted this recall, or what the potential issue associated with the bridge tube on affected models could be.

Kia India is voluntarily recalling 1,138 units of its EV6 due to a potential error in the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), which could affect the performance of the 12V auxiliary battery.

It has affected the EV6s manufactured between March 3, 2022 and April 14, 2023. A similar recall was issued for the Kia EV6’s counterpart, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, a month ago. Kia says that the software of the ICCU in the affected units will be updated to rectify the issue.

The Korean brand says that it has notified the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) about the recall initiative, and will contact owners of the concerned vehicles to inform them. The owners will need to contact their respective Kia dealers to schedule an appointment for the update.
