Can some one give me tips about reversing? I still have big time problem with it, especially when the space is narrow.
While reversing adjust your left ORVM a bit tilted to the ground so that you can see the obstacles on the ground or pavement.
Then move your view to IRVM then again to the mirror on right, keep on balancing your views to all the 3 mirrors, and you can park the car.

Always look at the top left of rear glass to judge the gap.

If its a tight spot and if you are alone, get down from the car judge the gap remaining and try to park.

Though Mukesh has already given the perfect suggestion.
But I have a small question: Which car you drive most of the time? Because for hatches, sedans and SUVs, reversing technique is slightly different.

As this thread says Driving tips from Gurus to Beginners let me add some value to it. I am no guru but have been driving for almost 12-13 years now and around 5 years in snow as well. So I will try to add some tips for driving in snow. I hope it helps our fellow members and guests who have to drive in snow.

I have been in US for almost 5 years now and it was here when I drove in snow, ice, sleet andsnow storms for the first time in my life. And yes these tips have helped me a lot to outlive in these bad weather conditions.

1. First advice from my side for driving in snow or really bad weather conditions is do not drive in these conditions. But if you still have to then,

2. Preparation:
- Check you tire thread. Tires should have good amount of thread and if you planning a trip where it’s all snow and ice then try replacing your tires to Winter Tires. Don’t get fooled by all weather tires. Why because they are not really meant for deep snow and icy road conditions driving. They are basically meant for summer, rain, winters, loose gravel etc.
- Check all your lights and keep your windshields clean all the time. Lights are very very important since they play a major role when the visibility is low and the oncoming traffic can only sense you by lights.
- Always be extra careful while driving on bridges. WHY? Because bridges and overpasses get frozen very quickly, hence creating icy conditions.
- Don’t think that you are the king of the road and will sustain any condition if you are driving a 4wd, AWD vehicle. Because if there are icy conditions then even a heavy SUV equipped with 4wd option will fail and skid. Even the big Semai trucks full of load can skid, so forget about a SUV.
- Always drive slow and keep a good amount of distance from the vehicle in front of you. I would say double the distance which you keep in normal driving conditions.
- Always keep a shovel and a scrapper in your car and if planning a long trip then some sand, salt and leather gloves (because they won’t get wet unlike the woolen ones).
- And above all sufficient fuel, A full tank will save you time and will increase the weight as well.
- Another tip if you don’t have a scrapper and you have ice on your windshield, use your ATM or credit card to remove the ice.
- Keep plenty of drinking water, food, extra clothes, good flash light and mobile with a charged battery (would be nice if you carry car charger). These things will come in handy if you get stuck somewhere.

Problems encountered while driving:
- Now if you are driving and all of a sudden your car starts skidding. First thing remove your foot from the accelerator and don’t brake hard, if you do it will make your car skid even more and faster. Why, because aggressive acceleration will make your tires loose traction. So what you do is take your foot from the accelerator, steer in the direction in which your car is skidding and press brakes slowly then release them, again press and then release. Keep doing this and parallel you might have to steer left and right with it to regain traction or until your car stops.
- Try to gain control over your speed by shifting down first rather than using brakes or with minimal usage of brakes.
- Worst Case Scenario: If you see that you are literally loosing the traction and you have incoming traffic or an obstacle and you think you may collide then in that case the best thing to do is ether to take your car off the road or use the side railings to stop your car. I know it might damage the car with some dents but it’s better than colliding with the oncoming traffic. So main point here is to take support of something to stop your car.
- Now if you have ABS, you'll be able to tell that ABS has triggered by feeling a pulsing sensation through the brake pedal. If this has occurred do not 'pump' the brakes – rather keep a firm pressure on the pedal for maximum effectiveness. You might feel something is wrong with your brakes or tires but be patient, it is supposed to be that way.
- If you get stuck in the snow please never do wheel spin as it will only create more trouble for you as your tires will get deeper in the snow. Come out of the car and don’t forget to put on your emergency lights (Blinkers) on before stepping out of the car which will alert other cars on the road. So come out use the shovel to remove the snow around the tire and put some sand, gravel or salt so that your tire can get grip.
- Move your steering left and right. Take your car forward and then take it reverse in the same direction or opposite direction, repeat this couple of times and you should be good.
- Also change your gears sooner than usual because it will reduce the torque hence you can retain the traction.
- If you have 4-5 people in the car then the best thing to do is you take the driver seat and put the car in 1 gear or in D mode (Drive for automatic version) and let other people push it and you accelerate the car, can be bit hard as well (depending on the situation). Car will come out.
- Now the most dangerous thing is BLACK ICE. Black ice is transparent hence very hard to notice while driving, but you might feel it as your tires will lose traction all of a sudden and regain it back. All this happens really quickly but you will come to know if you are a sedate driver. If you encounter that be extra careful, reduce your speed and keep checking the road by pushing your brakes frequently. And if you feel that it’s all over. STOP, do not drive. Park your car somewhere safe. You cannot fight with Black ICE even the best 4wd option can’t.
- The reason I said to STOP was because let’s say you keep driving and the rods starts declining, then in that situation you won’t be able to stop your car and your car and this can be really dreadful. Same goes with incline, your car will keep sliding down until and unless you reach a point where the road is even, straight or you hit something which can hold you.

Below are some videos just to give you an example, that how bad is Black IcE and what it is capable of doing.

Pl tell me what to do if I have stop on a slope. i am told to press break pedal only, but I fear if inadvertently pressure released the car will move backward and hit the car next to me.

@Siddhartha:
Handbrake + gear is the simple remedy if it is a steep slope. Else handbrake alone is more than sufficient.
Pressing brake pedal can't help for long because you have to remove your foot from it sometime.

Always follow Handbrake + gear whether you stop on slope or narrow lanes make it a habit. you can't always keep holding brakes for longer times relax your foot buddy.

Oh My God!! I was searching for this thread from past 2 weeks and now found it.

Little background : I have taken driving lesson on Santro and passed the driving test at Bangalore RTO. I know the basic and also I have around 70-80K 2wheelar riding experience in any kind of road. Bike experience helped me to understand the motive/mood of other driver on road which is very useful to avoid any accident because of other mistakes.
I learned driving in 2012 April and got the Ertiga ZDI in Dec 2012. With help of a driver I practiced around 80 KMs on NICE road bangalore as well as some 20 KM in bad roads. That helped me to drive the car without any sudden jerk or stoppage because of clutch control.

Now I took the car for two highway trip - Bangalore to ShivaSamudram and Bangalore to Pondy. Here comes set of questions , please clarify each of them.

Please help on following points:

1: While taking any turn which gear it should be in? I am using 2 or 3rd mostly.

2: What would be impact on the car/gearbox if gear has been changed from 3rd to 5th unknowingly.

3: What would be impact on car if we are changing the gear from 5th to 4th but unknowingly it is tending towards reverse? A gshhhhhhhh sound will come and I get cautious.

4: What if I am using clutch at speed of 80-100 when car is on slight slope?

5: What would be impact if in 3rd gear I attained a max speed of 60KM.

6: What would be impact on car if I accelerate while taking turn, my foot unknowingly hits gas paddle some time when I in 2nd gear and on L turn.
7: In which gear we should cross speed breaker? Generally I use neutral till front wheels crossed then use 2nd gear.
8: Now if I need to slow down from 5th gear say at speed of 100KM, I change it to neutral and start pressing clutch and break very slowly till it reaches the destination( like Toll Both).

9: For parking, should I turn steering as much as it can to straighten the wheel.

Many of the habits I mentioned above are getting over but still my reflexes are not that natural. I believe couple of thousand KMs, I can have same fluency what I am having on bikes.

Please reply to each question.

A few basic things about the clutch(for normal driving purposes) :-

5) Dont partially press the clutch for gear shifts
.
I guess, the gear shifts can not be smooth unless clutch is pressed fully, that is even in bikes. In ERtiga ZDI, it will not gor for gear changes unless clutch is pressed upto a good extent. Pressing clutch only it disengaged the mating gears. Correct me if I am wrong here.

Please help on following points:

1: While taking any turn which gear it should be in? I am using 2 or 3rd mostly.
Mostly the car should be in the 2nd gear while doing turns at low speeds especially the U-turns. However this doesnt hold good for all speeds.

2: What would be impact on the car/gearbox if gear has been changed from 3rd to 5th unknowingly.
It wont damage the gearbox drastically but will strain the engine since you wont be able to get the optium amount of torque to move ahead smoothly.

3: What would be impact on car if we are changing the gear from 5th to 4th but unknowingly it is tending towards reverse? A gshhhhhhhh sound will come and I get cautious.
It is not easy to shift from 5th gear to reverse gear. Unless you do it intentionally. The easiest way to avoid reverse gear engagement on move in 5th gear is that when you wish to downshift to 4th gear, just make sure you do it smoothly and do not apply an extra effort.

4: What if I am using clutch at speed of 80-100 when car is on slight slope?
Do not ride the clutch. If you do not need acceleration, shift to neutral. However, i would strongly suggest you to make use of gears in the ghat section so that your brakes are used for as small time as possible to avoid any kind of overheating which may lead to brake failure.

5: What would be impact if in 3rd gear I attained a max speed of 60KM.
Unnecessary straining of engine. Please maintain optimum rpm.

6: What would be impact on car if I accelerate while taking turn, my foot unknowingly hits gas paddle some time when I in 2nd gear and on L turn.
Dint get this question buddy! You will end up hitting something if the turn doesnt get completed.

7: In which gear we should cross speed breaker? Generally I use neutral till front wheels crossed then use 2nd gear.
Depends on the size. If your car has low GC (cars like Vento, Jetta), try commuting over them in 1st gear. However if the boulder isnt very huge you may use the 2nd gear.

8: Now if I need to slow down from 5th gear say at speed of 100KM, I change it to neutral and start pressing clutch and break very slowly till it reaches the destination( like Toll Both).
Again depends on your driving. You may sequentially shift down along with braking.

9: For parking, should I turn steering as much as it can to straighten the wheel.
Again dint get this query. If you turn the steering as much as possible which i translate to turning wheel to its limit, then the wheel direction would be one sides (either left or right).

I am confident you will get the idea of steering wheel position and width of vehicle with driving.

Happy Driving.

No buddy, even with partial engagement of clutch, the gear would get slotted to the desired position.[:)]

In most vehicles you will still be able to shift with the clutch partially depressed, but it takes more toll on the clutch and decreases its life. The right way is to always keep it fully pressed and then complete the shift action and release gradually. Even experienced drivers go out of sync with this process, so this is a constant check you need to keep to get the maximum out of your clutch life.

From personal experience:

1: While taking any turn which gear it should be in? I am using 2 or 3rd mostly.

Right angle turns: 1 or 2
Curves: 2 / 3 depending on how sharp the curve

2: What would be impact on the car/gearbox if gear has been changed from 3rd to 5th unknowingly.

I do it on highways. Make sure you are not going too slow in third. and the engine does not lug too much

3: What would be impact on car if we are changing the gear from 5th to 4th but unknowingly it is tending towards reverse? A gshhhhhhhh sound will come and I get cautious.

Gshh sound shound prevent you from engaging reverse. Once in a long while I guess the gshhh sound should not do much harm.

4: What if I am using clutch at speed of 80-100 when car is on slight slope?

Slope up or down? Anyway, depends on how steep the incline. Although why do you want to use the clutch at 80 kmph? You should be in the highest gear anyway and if you need to slow, you need to use the brake.

5: What would be impact if in 3rd gear I attained a max speed of 60KM.

Redline, not too good for your engine.

6: What would be impact on car if I accelerate while taking turn, my foot unknowingly hits gas paddle some time when I in 2nd gear and on L turn.

Depends how far the other vehicle or pedestrians are :)

7: In which gear we should cross speed breaker? Generally I use neutral till front wheels crossed then use 2nd gear.

You should change to 1 / 2 before you hit the speedbreaker. Depends on how steep the speedbreaker and stick to it until you cross the speedbreaker.

8: Now if I need to slow down from 5th gear say at speed of 100KM, I change it to neutral and start pressing clutch and break very slowly till it reaches the destination( like Toll Both).

No clutch. From 100 stay off the accelerator. Let it slow down, brake gradually till you slow down to 40-45. Engage third and let engine breaking take it down to close to 20. Engage the clutch, break lightly and let it roll to a complete stop. No jerking, smoothen it out for your passengers. Don't make them feel the G's.

9: For parking, should I turn steering as much as it can to straighten the wheel.

Straight wheels (straighter the better) on straight roads. Steer away from the kerb on inclines. Steer into the kerb on declines.

Thank You Sir for clarifications.

Do not ride the clutch. If you do not need acceleration, shift to neutral. However, i would strongly suggest you to make use of gears in the ghat section so that your brakes are used for as small time as possible to avoid any kind of overheating which may lead to brake failure.
Here I mean to summarize, clutch has to be used only when it is required like moving the car, brake application and gear changes.

But I believe in city driving we have to use clucth very frequently else vehicle will lose control.

Dint get this question buddy! You will end up hitting something if the turn doesnt get completed.
I meant to ask while taking turn some time I press gas paddle if the speed is too low. I guess , ideally incase speed is too low to complete the turn better to change in 1st gear?? Please confirm.

Depends on the size. If your car has low GC (cars like Vento, Jetta), try commuting over them in 1st gear. However if the boulder isnt very huge you may use the 2nd gear.
I have Ertiga, actually on speed breaker I take the speed to less than 10 and change to neutral for gradual deceleration. Once the front wheel crosses either I change to 2nd gear or 1st gear depending upon the speed. If speed is almost nil I shift to 1st gear else 2nd.

Please correct me if it's wrong practice.

Again dint get this query. If you turn the steering as much as possible which i translate to turning wheel to its limit, then the wheel direction would be one sides (either left or right).
I intended to ask what technique on steering wheel while doing a parking in tight slot. My way is to do lots of reverse and front movement but I have seen drivers to rotate the steering wheel sometime two rounds and easily maneuver in parking area.

No buddy, even with partial engagement of clutch, the gear would get slotted to the desired position.[:)]
I will definitely try this technique. I believe the driving schools are at fault who teaches wrong practice.Better to take lesson from Maruti Driving school only.
Our driving should not only for safe driving but it's also for better life of Car.

One last question:
What should be maximum speed for a new diesel car, on highway I maintain 100-120. But I always get overtaken by most of the cars and Swift car are crazier than many SUV. Now I understand why people say Swift is the best fun car.

Is it okay to hit the speed till 140 KM for a minute? Total distance covered is just 1500 KM. To get best FE, I guess 80KM is optimum speed but it's too slow on highways.

Slope up or down? Anyway, depends on how steep the incline. Although why do you want to use the clutch at 80 kmph? You should be in the highest gear anyway and if you need to slow, you need to use the brake.
So while decreasing speed we are not suppose to use clutch, brake application with clutch?

Is it not advisable to slowly decrease speed from 100 to 60 but removing foot from gas and slowly press clucth and brake, then change it to neutral so that it can travel some distance like speed breaker in front of Toll booth. Then change to 1st gear and start moving just releasing clutch till you reach toll window.

5: What would be impact if in 3rd gear I attained a max speed of 60KM.

Yes, I will avoid. I guess some more experience is need to get the actions in sync without much thinking. On bike all the actions are taken automatically.

Straight wheels (straighter the better) on straight roads. Steer away from the kerb on inclines. Steer into the kerb on declines.

Please elaborate with some example.

Believe me I am a good learner :)

As far as possible, you should not be coasting in neutral. Engaging neutral and keeping the clutch pressed are both the same thing.

I think I misunderstood your query about parking with straight wheels.

The less the movements while parking, the better driver you are. Although, I guess your goal is not to be a driver but to get home safely. So, I suppose with more practice you will get better at parking which means less tooing and froing, although it really does not matter as long as you don't nick other cars.
