After having driven close to 4000 kms on our highways in the past month you have the trucks and busses crawling in the right lane the lunatics you mentioned on the leftIit is with weary resignation that you are made to squeeze yourself somewhere in between. The day truckers go on strike and off the road would be nirvana.

As per MV Act driver/s are bound to give way to Ambulance/Police/Fire Tenders be it any side of the road. Rightly said any accident caused by them is your fault and not theirs. That is why these vehicles are equipped by hooters/sirens
(6) This Section shall not apply in the case of police and fire department vehicles and ambulances when the same are operating in emergencies and the drivers sound audible signal by bell, siren, compression or exhaust whistle, but this proviso shall not operate to relieve the driver of a police or fire department vehicle or ambulance from the duty to drive with due regard for the safety of all persons using the highway. R.S., c. 293, s. 93; 2001, c. 44, s. 2; 2004, c. 41, s. 1; 2004, c. 42, s. 7; 2005, c. 54, s. 2; 2007, c. 45, s. 6.

Yes, you are correct [;)] provided its on duty and still he has to be concerned of the safety of all persons using the highway, but there is no written rule that tells they can go against a one way it only tells we must leave way to emergency services provided on duty, but in india they are on duty always even if they aren't

But i have seen most/all police vehicles abiding to rules during non duty or during non-emergency, its only ambulance services which misuses this rule a lot

Shouldn't this exemptions be only for emergency situation? We Indians are quite good at bending/modifying rules.
They are only exempted when in emergency, and a siren/signal/bell is audible, as posted by swift&furious above. [:)]
All correct. But in India people make normal situation also look like emergency.

What emergency will be for a police jeep with a Fat office in it? except for collection of money in time.
in fact in India anyone can drive any side. Any govt vehicle is exempted of all rules. So Yes, Police have the rights :)

Drivers with vehicles having lables "GOVT. OF INDIA" can drive on any side of road and park anywhere they wish..is the unsaid law.

These days lots of Indics's and Vista's has it written with the windshields. Are these vehicles really owned by GOVT.?

We go one step further a lot of bikes have police written on them and if the people riding them are actually policemen I am the pm. I am off to coonoor tomorrow and will doubtless find a lot of morons doing the wrong side driving.

Oh I almost forgot. I have seen this especially in Karnataka during elections time.
Board on the vehicle says "On Election Duty- Very Urgent"

There is only 1 person and that too a driver, with one hand on cell and the other on wheel, driving as if he Owns the rd.
Dude!! What emergency do these Election officers have? Its taken and guarded by Police and CRF personal. Boxes are again moved by Police at their risk. so why that sticker. For show??

Unfortunately in India everyone has his/her own rules and this is the reason why we are the world leaders in road deaths [cry]. Many of forum members have cited the instance of vehicles coming from the wrong side driving close to the divider well let me tell you I also used to wonder why people drive close to the divider on the wrong side till this incident happened.

Sometime last December on Noida- Greater Noida expressway my friend was driving his Duster and we were doing about 100 Km/hr. The express way is very well lit along the entire stretch but somehow that night few stretches were dark. We were negotiating a curve and suddenly to our horror there was a cab coming straight towards us on the wrong side and in our lane. Now, my friend literally stood on the brakes and somehow manged to stop the car, same happened to the cab guy and we both stopped.

To our surprise the cab guy started to hurl choicest abuses on us for not driving carefully on the expressway [frustration]. My friend is short on temper so he got out of the car and in familiar north Indian fashion landed few punches on the drivers face. After the things cooled down a little the cab driver gave us a lesson for life. According to him he was driving on the correct side because close to the divider he is driving on the left hand side therefore we should have been careful [surprise] I was dumbfounded and we both chose not to argue with the guy anymore and left the scene.
So I believe in India people always try to bend the rules according to their comfort.

As I had previously mentioned as per them they are driving on the correct side but the morons do not realize that its the wrong direction. [frustration]

Whats hurts me more is because of these idiots some innocent ppl may suffer enjuries or even life but they dont realize it as they have 'some' cause to achieve by taking that wrong side.

I dont think any vehicle is exempted from the law unless its an emergency (for Police, fire and medical assistance).

I happen to see this every day infront of my office. Some of my customers use the wrong lane to visit me and end up having a long class.

These people dont take the wrong lane to save time, but they do it to save a few milliliters of fuel.
