i agree 9 3 position is the safest and i too drive with one hand on the steering and the other on the gear knob. may be sometimes 9 3, but 10 2 i never hold. not that i knew about it. but center piece in my steering attaches to the circumference of the steering at 9 3 which gives good grip to hold on so thats the practise . however i would like to add one more point regarding the best distance from the steering wheel. its like if you are holding your hands straight towards the steering wheel yopur wrist should rest on the top most part of the steering wheel thats the correct distance your seat needs to be adjusted for you to maneuver correctly
