ABS as it works at all speeds to prevent an accident from happening.

Airbags are effective only when coupled with Seat Belts that too only uptill a certain speed limit. Above certain speeds i.e 80or90kmph they are ineffective whereas ABS can still save your life.

If everyone follow every law, rule, regulation, discipline, I would say both Airbag & ABS are NOT REQUIRED. [anger] (am I day dreaming? expecting such miracles happen[confused])
You means accidents are due to human factor only???

What about mechanical or roadside faults or animals leading to accidents? Such mishaps can't be prevented by following law/rule/discipline, but damage can be minimized or prevented by ABS &/or airbags.

Obviously the answer is "YES" for 99% of cases. Balance 1% you can't depend on ABS or Airbags.

- Mechanical fault? Can you explain?
- Road side fault - it's another human fault who left a fault on the road
- Animal crossing - It's again human fault who should see to that the animal is never left unattended (atleast near the roads)

It has to be airbags.

ABS comes into play during motion and airbags mitigate the result. ABS cannot mitigate impact of an accident or prevent it - it can only increase control when braking and that depends on speed, terrain, oncoming traffic etc.

Also important to note, ABS is of no use if car is still and oncoming vehicle bangs into you or from behind. Hence airbags are key to safety from accidents in all scenarios

Though I would prefer to have both in my car, if I have to select just one, it has to be ABS.
Airbags are effective only if coupled with seatbelts, also have read some airbags deployment related issues in some accidents.
ABS is really helpful to keep the car in control in emergencies, sharp turns, rains etc.

Friends, can you give an idea of cost of installing ABS in non ABS car? Mine is Ritz Vxi. I have no problem with its non ABS system so far but I got trained in an ABS Ritz. It appeared to me the bite of break felt more prominently in that car than mine even with slightest pressing of break pedal. I never drove above 70 Km/hr and I always drive very carefully during rainy season.Do I need ABS at all?

Both ABS and Airbags are required. There cannot be a compromise on the safety aspect.
With cost conscious Indians, I don't think car manufacturers will provide ABS + 2 Airbags as standard equipment in all variants. Unless the government makes it mandatory to have these safety features, there is no solution to this issue. Alternatively awareness can be created among the buyers by highlighting safety features requirement. One is not sure how much this will be effective, but the least this can be done till the mandatory rules are enforced.
IMHO people are more worried about the ICE or leather seat present in a car rather than having these safety features. Forums like TAI can spread the awareness and emphasize on safety features in their advice on buying a car. But ultimately it depends on the individual buyer.

ABS is a premium feature and at such premium price customer should not be made to choose between the either. Airbags should be by default. After riding a vehicle either two (cbr250 abs) or four wheeler (honda jazz), i will only suggest ABS if one has to choose.

No you cannot. ABS setup includes sensors, disks, motors etc etc which is not possible. There are no aftermarket ABS kits available either. If possible there will have to be lots of modifications to be made, which makes it impractical.

It cannot be. For some reason the dealers will also suggest Non ABS/Airbags car. When I booked my Ritz Zxi they said we never go over 60km/hr in the city, why do you need one. My only answer is, there will only be that one day that you would require it and having safety features wont make me regret my decision. The only reason they suggest so is because they would have a Non ABS/Airbag in stock or its easier to procure. Top end models have a lot of waiting time.

Also if you ever see the NCAP crash tests, its done at a speed of approx 55km/hr. The car become totally smashed in that speed. Imagine you going at a car of 60km/hr and another coming from the opposite at 40km/hr hits you head on. Its as good as you hitting a wall at 100km/hr.
