BMW is gearing up to launch the seventh-generation version of the 7 Series, which will become a new rival for the likes of the new Mercedes EQS and the stalwart Tesla Model S when it goes on sale at the end of 2022. It’ll go on sale alongside the seventh-generation combustion-engined 7 Series.

These new official images show the EV tackling the later stages of its development programme, with the brand’s engineers testing the capability of its battery pack in warm weather. These are famously difficult conditions for an EV, as the heat negatively impacts the amount of energy the batteries can store – therefore lowering its driving range.

The i7 prototype in BMW’s official “spy shots” is still heavily camouflaged, so there’s nothing new to glean on the design front. The car’s shape is more that of a traditional three-box saloon than the ultra-curvy, hatchback-style EQS. A long bonnet and high shoulder line combines with a low nose, while the rear follows the classic large saloon format.

BMW also will introduce a new headlight design, first spotted on the facelifted version of the X7 SUV. The current car’s combined daytime running lights and main headlamps will be ditched in favour of split units, with the latter located lower down in the bumper.

As is customary on recent BMWs, the next i7 (and its combustion-engine sister car) will feature enormous kidney grilles, while the streamlined nose references that of the iX SUV. Buyers will also be able to choose between standard and long-wheelbase layouts.

BMW is yet to release technical specifications for the electric i7. However, the company claims that the car’s suspension, steering, braking, driving dynamics and stability systems have been “designed to raise the balance between sportiness and ride comfort that’s typical of the brand’s luxury sedans to the next level.”

BMW i7 spyshots-12.jpg

Given that the EV will be going toe to toe with the Mercedes EQS, we expect BMW will need to achieve a maximum range of around 400 miles to remain competitive in the segment. The EQS is capable of 484 miles on a single charge, thanks to its 107kWh battery.

It’s expected that the i7 will be based on BMW’s modular CLAR platform and powered by its fifth-generation eDrive technology, which also appears in the new i4 saloon and iX. Using this EV drive system should dramatically reduce production times, because it groups the electric motor, transmission and electronics into a single unit. The layout also cuts the overall mass and size of the system, which translates into a little more range.

The i4 and iX already share the same drive systems – and we expect the i7 will follow suit. We anticipate that the electric limousine will launch with those cars’ 516bhp dual-motor, four-wheel drive setup in xDrive50 flagship guise.

That system has enough grunt for a 0–62mph time of 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 124mph in the iX – figures that the i7 should match or even beat, as it’ll be a bit lighter and more aerodynamic. We expect a lesser 322bhp xDrive40-badged variant will also join the range, offering a 0–62mph time of around six seconds. An M variant hasn’t been confirmed.

BMW teases new i7 and 7 Series ahead of 20 April reveal

i7 teaser - 1_m51yxe.jpg

BMW will unveil its new luxury flagship 7 Series saloon on the 20 April - and for the first time it will be available as a full EV, badged i7, alongside plug-in hybrid and pure-combustion models.

i7 teaser - 2_i8rgqu.jpg
At its annual results conference, BMW teased the exterior and interior design of its new luxury model, obviously sporting the brand’s now trademark oversized kidney grilles flanked by a pair of slim crystal headlights.

A bright white outline of the front grille suggests that the production car may well feature some form of illumination for this design element, as per the brand’s X6 SUV.

BMW 7 Series exclusive image-2.jpg

Inside, BMW’s teasers show that the firm’s 31-inch Theatre Screen projector system shown at the Consumer Electronics Show in January will make its debut on the i7/7 Series, while the dash will feature a minimalist look dominated by a pair of curved screens, as per BMW’s iX.

The brand also confirmed that the i7 will use that car’s fifth-generation eDrive battery and motor systems, although it stopped short of confirming specifications. BMW CEO Oliver Zipse did say that the new car represents “tech magic at its best”, fitting in with much of the above.

As a rival to both the Mercedes S-Class and EQS ICE and EV limousines, the 7 Series will be the only luxury saloon model offered with both combustion engine and all-electric power, Zipse said. Read on below to see what powertrains we expect the car to feature.

The seventh-generation car will launch on 20th April and our exclusive images preview how it could look, highlighting much of the detail teased by BMW in its official shots.

The new luxury flagship saloon will use an updated version of the modular CLAR architecture employed on the current 7 Series, as well as the majority of other BMWs offered with rear-wheel drive. The platform is adaptable, allowing for its use in two of the brand’s latest EVs (the iX and i4), as well as the forthcoming i7.

BMW will introduce a distinctive new headlight design that moves the model away from other saloons, such as the 5 Series. The current car’s combined daytime running lights and main headlamps will be ditched in favour of split units, with the latter located down in the bumper.

As is customary on recent BMWs, the next 7 Series will feature huge kidney grilles, while the streamlined nose and fluted bonnet references the iX SUV. Buyers of the new luxury limo will also be able to choose between standard and long-wheelbase layouts.

The rear of the new 7 Series is a little more conventional, with changes including a taller, reshaped bootlid and new, slimmer tail-lights. Higher-spec petrol or diesel-powered models will also be fitted with a recessed twin-exit exhaust system that’s set into a diffuser element in the rear bumper.

BMW is yet to detail technical specifications for the 7 Series, or the electric i7 for that matter. We expect the model to continue to be offered with a range of 3.0-litre six-cylinder engines utilising 48v mild-hybrid tech to improve efficiency. Diesel power will be offered, too, with BMW chairman Oliver Zipse confirming four different drive technologies will be available.

New BMW i7 revealed with 388-mile range

BMW i7 2022-12.jpg

The first-ever all-electric BMW 7 Series production car is here. Not only that, but the BMW i7 is also the only version of Munich’s luxury saloon available from launch - its plug-in hybrid cohorts won’t arrive in the UK until spring 2023.

BMW i7 2022-23.jpg
The BMW i7 is based on the latest version of BMW’s ‘CLAR’ (cluster architecture) platform, which allows for the use of pure combustion, PHEV and all-electric drivetrains.

BMW i7 2022-14.jpg

The styling doesn’t deviate significantly from the closely-related 7 Series. There’s the same large and backlit front kidney grille arrangement, plus the new split headlight design also seen on the recently facelifted X7. BMW says the latter feature will be

BMW i7 2022-16.jpg

Designed to target the likes of the Mercedes EQS in the electric luxury car segment, the i7 will launch in xDrive60 guise - a variant Auto Express drove in prototype form earlier this year. It features two electric motors - one for each axle - giving total outputs of 536bhp and 745Nm of torque. At some point in 2023, an i7 M70 will join the range, with a provisional power output of 651bhp.

BMW i7 2022-17.jpg

The 0-62mph time for the xDrive 60 is 4.7 seconds, and the top speed is 149mph. The 101.7kWh battery pack located under the floor is described as “extremely thin” with a cell height of 110mm, meaning the 7 Series' characteristically sleek silhouette is retained.

BMW i7 2022-18.jpg

According to the WLTP cycle, the i7 xDrive 60 uses 19.6-18.4kWh of the battery’s energy for every 62 miles covered, giving a range of between 367 and 388 miles. The i7 can be charged at up to 11kW AC, while the maximum DC charge rate is 195kW, making it possible to add just over 100 miles of range in 10 minutes with a powerful enough charging station.

BMW i7 2022-21.jpg

The suspension setup involves double wishbones at the front with a multilink rear, and widened tracks compared to the outgoing G11-generation 7 Series. Air suspension is fitted as standard and is able to drop the ride height by 10mm in Sport mode (or at higher speeds to lower drag), or raise it by 20mm if the conditions demand.

BMW i7 2022-22.jpg

An all-wheel steering system turns the rear wheels by up to 3.5 degrees, in the opposite direction to the front wheels at lower speeds and in the same direction at higher speeds. This brings handling benefits at speed and a reduction in the turning circle around town. Further improving dynamics are a 48-volt motor-based active anti-roll system and variable-ratio steering.

BMW i7 2022-2.jpg

Inside the i7, the most notable feature is the optional 8k, 31.3-inch ‘BMW Theatre Screen’. It drops down from the car’s ceiling, and runs on Amazon Fire tablet software, giving numerous content possibilities. You can also spec a 36-speaker, near-2,000-watt Bowers & Wilkins Diamond audio setup, although the standard-fit hi-fi from the same firm is hardly lacking with 18 speakers dotted around the cabin.

BMW i7 2022-4.jpg

In the front is a BMW Curved Display, shared with the iX SUV. It combines a 12.3-inch infotainment system with a 14.9-inch digital instrument binnacle. New for the i7 and its 7 Series sibling is the ‘BMW Interaction Bar’ stretching across the dash and onto the door cards. It’s best thought of as an ambient light bar mixed with a control surface, and is able to display different themes and provide visual feedback for things like safety warnings and incoming call audio.
