Re: BMW Plant Chennai - Inplant Training

Brilliant, bsaketh. I studied automobile engineering in SRM university, which was very close to the BMW & Ford plants. We used to keep going to Mahindra World city, where BMW had its facility. Congratulations on pulling this off [:)]

P.S.: With the idea of joining BMW as a manager; you, sir, have my attention! [lol]

Hello Saketh, that was a fabulous review on BMW's Plant, loved reading every lines and appreciate the pain taken in writing everything in detail.

What is the time taken for a car to be assembled?
Thanks a lot Vishwas, I am glad you liked it. [:)]

The plant has a capacity to produce 30 cars in two shifts. But, it was running at half its capacity i.e., 15. By taking into account missing parts, defects, other problems, around 9-12 were being produced. Each car takes an average of 6-7 hours to roll off the production line. Sometimes they do it fast, sometimes its slow so you can't actually tell the exact number. They usually have monthly targets and they generally achieve this.

May be I am asking for too much.. But can you please PM me their email details please?? [:)]

Thank you [:)]. Haha one thing I can tell you about them is, Germans are really really friendly and BMW's policy is that they wont easily let their employees go (fire them). They try to accommodate them in some department.

Nice thread bsaketh. Though I do not fancy BMW too much, I still envy you for having had this opportunity to be a part of them for some time. Please share as many details of the plant that may be lying in the dark recesses of your mind, if you know what I mean[;)].

Awesome Bsaketh. I am sure you must have enjoyed the plant visit and must be a dream come true. I must admit that this is one of the most sophisticated assembly plant and I believe this is not a full fledged plant and they only do assemble CKD units here?

Btw, you are the one of the very few members who have got this splendid opportunity. Now I remember my Engineering days and finally soon after I finished my final year I started my IT Services company, which took me totally to a entire new profession. But I still do have loads of interest in Automotive industry and will remain as a hobby to keep exploring new things and developments in the Automotive industry.

Thanks a lot Vjroadie. I did enjoy a lot. It was a dream come true and was like a holiday for me [:D]. Yes, this is not a full - fledged plant as there is not much demand unlike Ford. AI is an ever expanding place with new technologies coming every year, and I am glad you share the same passion with us. [:)]

Man i gotta say, reading your thread got back 2 memories of mine, one was when i was buying my new verna I was pretty much fascinated by knowing how they are assembled at the factory and had viewed a lot of assembly line videos on youtube. Second was when I interning with ZoOm Tv in the sound studio, i had to submit a 100 page report to my college[frustration]. All in all a very very good thread I hope you would share more of what you experienced at BMW.
