Yes bro,That's the point.Even the higher authorities(babus) at many place in metropolitan city
like mumbai still have their tints on,what for?why no fair law for all?
Government is coming up with such stringent policies(though late, whatever "der hai,par durast hai") for us and for our loved once. Everytime blaming the police,it wrong. They are already under pressure for working up to 18 hours.
ABS should me made compulsory to all vehicles commercial and passengers.

Good judgement by the government, but should be made compulsory too all vehicles, passengers & commercial to,it comes handy in tricky and dangerous situations.

But government should come up with stricter policies like the recent "Window Film /dark tints removal" , i mean to say each car must be thoroughly checked for abs unit, and avoid tampering how film and tint removal was done to most of cars.
Hi patkar_a, in all my vehicles I have ABS only. I use the same technic always, but in our country in bumper to bumper traffic it won't work good always. In foreign countries they go in same lane, but that does not happen in our country.

Re: ABS to be mandatory from 2014

This is great news and should be for all vehicles. Basic safety first and then the other accessories.

Good News, But it is just a start and it needs a lot of other things to go with this to improve the situation. In a country where there is no limit on the life of commercial vehicles, where a FARGO lorries are still being used, making ABS compulsory in new vehicles is not a revolutionary step. We had to start somewhere and I am really happy that a start is being made, but a time limit should be fixed for existing vehicles to adhere to latest emission and safety standards. This will pave the way for safer roads at a foreseeable future.

In case of new vehicles, due to competition there will be a general improvement in safety standards, but it is the older vehicles which will be more dangerous.

ABS to be made mandatory for all Commercial Vehicles in India by April 2015

In a move to contain fatal road accidents, India has made anti-lock braking system (ABS) compulsory on all new models of commercial vehicles staring April next, an endeavour aimed at making the country's notoriously accident-prone roads safer.

While yet-to-be-launched models must have the feature starting next fiscal year, manufacturers will get another six months to fit ABS on new vehicles sold under existing models.

What about Passenger cars? ABS must be made standard in passenger vehicles too!
It is good that ABS is being made mandatory in all commercial vehicles. But do the drivers know how to use the safety feature? Do they know how the pedal will feel while emergency braking?
They should be educated about it.

I feel ABS and dual air bags should be made mandatory in all passenger vehicles like cars as well. It won't really jack up costs because we will not need to import stuff like air bags anymore and we can produce everything here only which help us contain the cost.
Also people's perception has to change from "Kitna Deti hai" to "Kya kya safety features hai".
Most people bet on the probability of getting killed in a car accident and hence go for an unsafe car. But they don't under stand that the very small probability, if came true can result in them meeting with their maker.

Coming up next,
The government has drawn up a set of safety norms for new cars in the country, including mandatory offset frontal crash and side-impact tests, in a move that will make vehicles safer but slightly more expensive.
Passenger vehicles saftey is being reviewed. All stakeholders such as carmakers and testing agencies are underway to finalise and implement the programme christened Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program. The government plans to introduce mandatory crash tests for new cars in a few years for new models. Cars sold in the country will also have star ratings based on their safety performance, similar to the European New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP).

I seriously hope this happens. I am ready to pay for a safer car even if that means they will remove some nice to have features like futuristic dashboard and such.

Along with safety features being made Standard,

- Most importantly, driving schools must loose the "chalta hai" attitude, and actually impart driving lessons, Do's & Dont's to the drivers, and RTO's must have a stricter driving test across the country, rather than the current one in place which varies from state, and is checking basic driving skill.

- Infrastructure needs to improve, without this, safety aspect doesnt become 100% beneficial

- Lane discipline must be strongly followed and brought into action. Heavy Vehicles compulsorily on extreme left lane, and not wherever they feel like driving [frustration]

- Stricter "fitness certification" of vehicles every year in case of Heavy Transport Vehicles

- Restrict plying of heavy vehicles (construction, transport, goods and so on) within city limit during peak hours, which isnt the case in majority of the cities in our country. [rules]

Lets hope our country's situation improves in the coming years as far as driving manners are concerned. [glasses]
