A Solo Adventure to Puri: Unveiling the Charms of Orissa
Introduction:
Embarking on a spontaneous solo journey can be an exhilarating experience, filled with unexpected twists and turns. Join me as I recount my impromptu trip to Puri, Orissa, following an evening of movie magic. This travelogue chronicles my memorable escapade, where I navigated picturesque roads, savored local delicacies, and soaked in the spiritual aura of Puri.
1: The Journey Begins
It was an ordinary evening on January 20th, 2023, when I found myself captivated by the enchanting world of Avatar 2 at South City Mall. Little did I know that this cinematic experience would spark an impulsive decision to embark on a solo adventure. Arriving home at 11:30 PM, a surge of wanderlust propelled me to make an instant plan to visit Puri, a beloved holiday destination for Bengalis.
2: The Road Less Traveled
With my trusty Maruti-Suzuki Alto-800, fondly named "White-Wonder," I began my journey from near Acropolis Mall in Kolkata on January 21st, 2023, at 1 AM. Though tinged with sadness, as this would be my last long trip with White-Wonder before exchanging it for a new car, I set off optimistically. After some rest, packed my bags and ensure I had my Fast Tag rechared, before I hit the road.
Driving through Ruby More, I embarked on the Maa Flyover, relishing the lack of traffic. Crossing Vidyasagar Setu, I chose the Andul Road, which gifted me with empty stretches and the thrill of my first solo ride. Uncertain if I missed Kolaghat due to taking the Andul Road, the joy of driving my ten-year-old car without a hint of fear overtook any lingering doubt. The cold weather chilled my feet, necessitating the use of the car's heater.
With no other vehicles in sight on that dark, wintry night, I felt like a ghostly traveler in a deserted town. However, relying on Google Maps led me astray briefly, requiring a detour through Kharagpur town before rejoining the main highway. Hunger gnawed at my stomach, but all the roadside Dhabas were closed. I settled for chips, cake, and water from a makeshift roadside shop, where the shopkeeper revealed he too was en route to Puri to offer prayers to Lord Jagarnnath.
The highway was impeccable, but the numerous diversions, camouflaged by darkness, necessitated frequent braking. Just as the first rays of sunrise graced the horizon, I pulled over for a refueling break and some much-needed rest.
3: The Arrival in Puri
With only 200 kilometers remaining to reach Puri and the time reading 7:23 AM, I embarked on the buttery, utterly delicious highways of Orissa. However, a strict speed limit of 80 km/hr kept me on my toes, with hefty fines looming as a consequence of exceeding it. By 10 AM, I crossed Bhubaneswar and redirected onto the Puri Highway after a tea break, signaling the final leg of my journey.
Arriving in Puri around 11:10 AM, I found myself without a pre-booked hotel. Engaging in a brief search, I stumbled upon Hotel Raj near Puri Sargadwar, conveniently located opposite Mitra Cafe. After settling in and resting for a while, I set out to offer prayers at the revered Jagannath Mandir. Opting for a Toto ride from my hotel, the short journey allowed me to immerse myself.
3 (Continued): Exploring Puri's Delights
After returning to the hotel, I savored a delicious lunch and took some well-deserved rest. In the evening, I strolled along the mesmerizing shores of Puri beach, relishing the cool breeze that whispered tales of the sea. With a steaming cup of hot tea in hand, I found tranquility in the embrace of nature's beauty.
Returning to the hotel, I decided to order dinner from their in-house restaurant. The food surpassed my expectations, offering a delightful blend of flavors that not only satisfied my hunger but also proved affordable for my pocket.
As the clock struck 9 PM, I couldn't resist the temptation to sample & pack Puri's famous Khaja and Milk Cake. These traditional delicacies, known for their delectable taste, became the perfect evening treat, leaving me with a lingering sweetness.
Having relished my dinner, I retired for the night, eager to rest and recharge for the journey ahead. However, my adventurous spirit awakened me at 4 AM. Originally planning to commence my return journey to Kolkata at 5:30 AM on January 22nd, dense fog compelled me to wait for better visibility. Finally, at 7 AM, I checked out of the hotel, embracing the foggy conditions that persisted.
Unable to wait any longer for the fog to dissipate, I decided to have breakfast at the hotel's restaurant. The flavourful Alu-Paratha provided a hearty start to the day, fortifying me for the challenging road ahead.
By 8:30 AM, with the fog still persisting, I took a calculated risk and embarked on my journey back to Kolkata. The return journey lacked the vibrant colors and excitement of the initial trip. I encountered a significant traffic jam after passing through Kolaghat.
Despite the obstacles, I persevered, and at precisely 8 PM, I arrived home, completing my first solo trip in a car. Exhausted yet elated, I cherished the memories and lessons gathered along the way.
Conclusion:
My impulsive decision to embark on a solo adventure to Puri, Orissa, proved to be an exhilarating and unforgettable experience. From the thrill of driving through empty roads to discovering the spiritual ambiance of Puri, I embraced every moment of this unplanned journey. As I bid farewell to my faithful car, White-Wonder, I carried with me the joy of exploration, the taste of delectable cuisine, and the serenity found by the shores of Puri beach. This spontaneous escapade awakened my wanderlust and opened my eyes to the wonders that await those who dare to follow their instincts and embrace the unknown.
