Press Release:
Škoda Auto India has announced an all-new compact SUV as the next step of its product offensive in the country after Kushaq and Slavia. The strategically important new car in the popular compact segment – developed and built in India – will strengthen Škoda Auto’s position in the market and further accelerate the company’s internationalisation strategy. The sub 4 metre SUV will debut in India in the first half of 2025.

“India is crucial to the global growth of Škoda Auto, both because of its own market strength and as a development and manufacturing base for our expansion in new markets including ASEAN and the Middle East. We have more than doubled sales in India since 2021 and we are now taking the next step by further expanding the range of models designed for customers in India and internationally. The all-new compact SUV due in 2025 will add an important segment for customers. I’m confident the expanding Škoda portfolio will contribute to our India growth target of achieving a market share for the Volkswagen family of brands of around 5 percent by 2030.” Klaus Zellmer, CEO Škoda Auto

“The Škoda brand has taken big strides globally. In 2023, we have grown by 18.5% compared to 2022. India is a key market for our growth and we have just crossed the 100,000 sales mark over the last two years – thanks to the locally developed and produced Kushaq and Slavia models. With the all-new compact SUV, we are underlining our commitment to India and its importance to our internationalisation plans. Together with the Kushaq and the Kodiaq, we will have an even better SUV portfolio for India, which is a key segment that contributes over 50% to all vehicle sales in the market.” Martin Jahn, Škoda Auto Board Member for Sales and Marketing

“After the success of the Kushaq and Slavia, we are expanding our reach with the upcoming launch of an all-new compact SUV, targeting the largest segment in India. Our R&D expertise in India has already enabled us to incorporate highly localised parts and components for our entire range. With the new compact SUV, we are furthering this strategy by systematically developing our local supplier base to provide parts and components of global standards and quality at competitive prices. We aim to actively participate in the evolving landscape of mobility in India. We remain focused on our expansions and further enhancement of the Group’s wide portfolio of cars in India.” Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO, Škoda Auto Volkswagen India

A compact SUV to attract new customer groups

The new model will be the brand’s entry level product in India and intends on winning new customer groups in the strategically important compact segment. As a sub 4 metre SUV, the car uses the excise benefits for under 4-metre cars available in India and the car manufacturer will pass on these benefits to customers when it comes to pricing. To directly involve customers and fans in the market even before the car hits the road in the first half of 2025, Škoda Auto India announced the #NameYourSkoda campaign. The car maker shared seven registered names with the public but also encourages customers to suggest their naming ideas for the new compact SUV. The final name after this participative approach will be officially announced later this year.

Extending the locally developed and built product portfolio on the MQB-A0-IN platform

The new compact SUV will be the third Škoda product on the MQB-A0-IN platform and will forward the same Škoda DNA of superior driving dynamics and safety as the other two locally developed and produced models Kushaq and Slavia. The platform was developed jointly by teams in India and the Czech Republic with a focus on high localisation, low cost of ownership, and quick turnaround times. It is the first platform developed by the company outside of Europe and tailormade for the Indian market. The platform enables the use of efficient engines and advanced safety systems, specifically for the Indian market and to meet the country’s new, stricter safety and emission requirements. The MQB-A0-IN platform has already proven its mettle in India and the world with the Kushaq and Slavia earning a full 5-stars for adult and child occupants in Global NCAP crash tests in October 2022 and April 2023 respectively. They were the first cars in India to be tested under the then newer and stricter test protocols of Global NCAP and the first to earn 5 stars for both adults and children.

India as an integral part of Škoda Auto’s internationalisation strategy

Activities in the Indian market are part of Škoda Auto’s Next Level Strategy. Škoda aims to sell 100,000 Škoda vehicles annually in India by 2026, become the best-selling European brand by 2030 and achieve a five percent market share for all Volkswagen Group brands as part of its responsibility for the region. Škoda Auto is rapidly expanding its internationalisation strategy and leverages synergies in the export of vehicles produced in India to the ASEAN and Middle East regions.

The #NameYourSkoda campaign has received over 1,30,000 name suggestions which are inline with the Škoda's SUV family naming tradition of starting with letter ‘K’ and ending with ‘Q’.
  • This tradition dates back to the launch of Kodiaq in 2017. Its name reflects the qualities of both, Kodiak bear and the Kodiak Archipelago to the south of Alaska, USA that it inhabits.
  • The nomenclature is a reflection of the beauty, grandeur and toughness of both the bear and the terrain it calls home. The Škoda Kushaq takes this legacy forward.
  • The next leg of NameYourSkoda campaign will allow participants to visit the microsite (nameyourskoda.com) and cast votes for the shortlisted names as well as suggest new ones.
  • The winner of this contest stands an opportunity to own Škoda's new Compact SUV. Ten winners will also get to visit Škoda Auto in Mlada Boleslav including Škoda Museum and a tour of Prague.
Next leg of the campaign starts from March 28, 2024 and runs till April 12, 2024. The jury for this campaign comprises of:
  • Petr Janeba: Brand Director, Škoda Auto India
  • Piyush Arora: Managing Director and CEO, Škoda Auto Volkswagen India
  • Martin Jahn: Member of the Board of Management for Sales & Marketing, Škoda Auto
  • Jan Bures: Executive Director, Sales, Marketing and Digital, Škoda Auto Volkswagen India

Škoda has released the second teaser of its New Compact SUV. The Czech automaker also states that:
  • The compact SUV promises the dynamics, handling and road-manners of a larger car while maintaining the 4-metre footprint.
  • The design teased hints at elements from Škoda Auto’s Modern Solid design language. The all-new compact SUV will be the company’s first implementation of the Modern Solid design language in India.
  • The design team has endeavoured to provide this all-new SUV bold and muscular shapes around the fenders with the goal of providing an enhanced stance and road presence to the car.
  • This Škoda will also have a high ground clearance and space around the wheel for tackling uneven road surfaces and lend the car that SUV character.
  • The design will retain the typical Škoda SUV language in the front and add details like refined and precise DRL light signatures. It will also feature a hexagon pattern on the side and rear of the car.

I have seen this car being tested in Pune some time back, it looked small. Felt it to be smaller than Nexon. looked like baby kushaq. The interiors look very basic. probably it was just a test vehicle.

Škoda Auto India’s new SUV will be called the Škoda Kylaq.

Škoda Kylaq.jpg

Press Release:
Today marks a major milestone for Škoda Auto India as it approaches a new era in India with its all-new compact SUV. Announced in February and following a recent teaser of its design, the vehicle has been named through an imaginative nationwide campaign. Reflecting the choice of thousands of people, Škoda Auto India’s new SUV will be called the Kylaq, embodying a unique connection with its future drivers.

Speaking at the name unveil, Petr Janeba, Brand Director, Škoda Auto India, said: “Our new compact SUV Kylaq is for the people of India. We wanted them to be part of every milestone of our biggest-ever launch in the country. The ‘Name Your Škoda’ campaign aimed at inculcating a sense of pride and belonging among participants and potential customers. The results are humbling with over 200,000 entries. It reinforces our legacy in India and showcases the great affinity people have towards brand Škoda. The naming process of a car is important for us. And this upcoming all-new compact SUV represents the ultimate milestone within the fastest growing and biggest segment in India. With the Kylaq, people, customers and fans have themselves named our newest family member, which is developed jointly by the teams in India and Europe, and will be locally manufactured.”

Named by the people

The Name Your Škoda campaign, rolled out in February 2024, enabled the involvement and engagement of users, customers and the Fans of Škoda in picking the name for the all-new compact SUV that is to make its India and world debut in 2025. Through ‘Name Your Škoda’, participants suggested names for the compact SUV that begins with the letter ‘K’ and ends with the letter ‘Q’ with one or two syllables, in line with Škoda’s tradition of naming their ICE SUVs. The campaign resulted in over 200,000 entries with over 24,000 unique names.

In the next phase, participants cast their vote for the choice among 15 shortlisted names. Basis the number of votes, from the 15 shortlisted names, 10 names were announced by Škoda Auto India. From the list, the winning name, which received the most votes and met all legal compliance criteria, was chosen for the all-new compact SUV. Kylaq is derived from the Sanskrit word for crystal, reflecting both the vehicle’s pristine qualities and inspiration from Mt. Kailash.

Voters are the winners

The winner of this naming contest will be the first owner of the Škoda Kylaq when it hits roads in 2025, lending them the unique opportunity of owning a car they named. Another 10 winners will visit Škoda Auto in Prague with a tour of the Škoda Museum and of the city. Winners will be announced at 2pm today across Škoda Auto India’s social media channels.

The Kylaq

The all-new compact SUV, now christened Kylaq, positioned as the ‘SUV for you’, is Škoda Auto India’s first ever foray into the compact SUV segment. This SUV is based on the MQB-A0-IN platform, the same as the one of the Kushaq SUV and the Slavia sedan. The MQB-A0-IN was specifically developed for India by teams in India and the Czech Republic with an eye on versatility, safety, dynamics while focussing on localisation, low maintenance costs and a hassle-free ownership experience.

What to expect

The all-new compact SUV will be the company’s first implementation of the Modern Solid design language in India. It will also have a high ground clearance and space around the wheel for tackling uneven road surfaces lending the car that SUV character. The design will retain the typical Škoda SUV language in and add details like refined and precise DRL light signatures. The upcoming SUV will also feature a hexagon pattern on the side and rear of the car. The compact SUV is currently undergoing rigorous testing across India and the company is preparing for production with local supplier ramp-ups. Based on a larger car platform, the compact SUV will have the ‘big car’ feel within a compact footprint.

The naming tradition

It is a tradition going back to the company’s first ever full-fledged 7-seater luxury 4x4, the Kodiaq, in 2017. The name reflects the qualities of both, the Kodiak bear and the Kodiak Archipelago to the south of Alaska, USA that it inhabits. The nomenclature is a reflection of the beauty, grandeur and toughness of both the bear and the terrain it calls home. The Škoda Kushaq takes this legacy forward as its name is derived from the Sanskrit word for Emperor. And the all-new compact SUV, the Škoda Kylaq that will make its world debut in India in 2025, takes the nomenclature voted by the people, while following Škoda’s SUV family naming tradition.

The India fleet

The Kushaq SUV debuted in India and the world in July 2021 and the Slavia sedan in March 2022. Since then, these two India-developed cars have taken Škoda Auto India to witness its biggest year in sales and take the shortest time to achieve the landmark of over 100,000 cars sold. The Škoda Kylaq will be the third all-new, India-specific product developed by Škoda Auto India.
