Bharat NCAP has been officially introduced in India. The norms will come into effect from 1st October 2023, making India the fifth nation in the world to have its own crash-test programme.

The programme will rate vehicles in M1 category between 1 – 5 stars, covering three areas: Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection and Fitment of Safety Assist Technologies.

The model is nominated by the manufacturer, the base variant unit of which is then picked by Bharat NCAP through random sampling. Bharat NCAP has already received over 30 requests so far. [thumbsup]

Bharat NCAP: All you need to know about India's new Safety Rating System

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways rolled out a new safety rating system for passenger cars on Tuesday. It will come into effect from October 1. The announcement was made during the launch of the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP) in New Delhi.

With Bharat NCAP into effect, India will become the fifth country in the world to have its own car crash test rating system. Cars, tested under this programme, will carry a Bharat NCAP logo as well as a sticker, showcasing its rating.

Under the Bharat NCAP programme, the cost of testing a car is around ₹ 60 lakh. Similar tests if done overseas amount to ₹ 2.5 crore.

As per the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197, car manufacturers can voluntarily offer their cars for testing. Depending upon the performance of a car in the test, they will get star ratings for Adult Occupants (AOP) and Child Occupants (COP).

Parameters of Bharat NCAP

Structural safety of the car

Provision of active and passive safety assist technologies

Pedestrian-friendly design

Bharat NCAP, launched by Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, aims to improve road safety by elevating and improving the safety standards of motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes in India.

Nitin Gadkari said, “This is the time when we have the highest priority for how we can save lives of the people, and road safety is the most important thing for that. Road engineering is a big problem somewhere; out total process of making detailed project reports is a completely wrong methodology. We are trying our level best to educate our engineers about the types of mistakes we are repeating in road engineering.”

Mr Gadkari added that 30 models of different car makers have already registered voluntarily for the testing.

Mandatory Car Safety Features In India

Airbags for the driver as well as passenger (front and back) have been made mandatory.

Reversed parking sensors, cameras, speed alert systems, electronic stability to prevent skitting, and loss of control, prevent wheel lock-up, maintain steering control, seat belt reminders and lock-braking systems are also essential in certain vehicles.

Importance Of New Car Testing

The new safety norms, under Bharat NCAP, will help Indian cars compete in the global market. It will increase the export potential of the domestic car manufacturers and also develop a safety-sensitive car market in the country.

Every year, around 5 lakh road accidents are reported, and 1.5 deaths take place in road accidents. Roughly 1,100 accidents and 4,00 deaths occur daily on roads. These statistics prove that the Bharat NCAP system is the need of the hour and it might be a game changer.

Global NCAP to stop testing Indian Cars – Will not rival Bharat NCAP

With the launch of Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP), questions started arising in the minds of the people about Global-NCAP, the world class crash testing agency. But now it is completely clear that now Global NCAP will not do crash testing of cars manufactured and sold in India. This global agency has decided to discontinue its Safer Cars for India campaign from December 2023, under which it used to test cars here and give them a star rating between 0 to 5 on the basis of performance.

Bharat NCAP is gearing up for its official launch in October, on the other hand Global NCAP has decided to end its safety test campaign for India by the end of this year. David Ward of Global NCAP said in his statement to the media, “We absolutely do not want to be seen as a rival program of India NCAP.” For this, Global NCAP has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Central Institute for Road Transport (CIRT), which functions as the technical secretariat of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

Don’t take it as a competitor, under this MoU, Global NCAP will provide technical support to Bharat NCAP based on its vast experience gained over the last decade of vehicle testing. This includes selection of vehicles for testing, conducting crash tests and communication strategy for sharing the results, etc. Apart from this, in the MoU, vehicle manufacturers have also been instructed to use the testing results responsibly in their advertisements, so that it cannot be misused in any way in future.

The Indian government has aligned Bharat NCAP’s test protocols with global crash-test protocols, and the new standards will feature star ratings from 1 to 5 stars on their website. This will apply to ‘M1’ category motor vehicles with a mass of less than 3.5 tonnes, manufactured or imported in the country. M1 class motor vehicles are used for the transport of passengers, which have 8 seats apart from the driver’s seat.

bharat-ncap-logo-2-768x515.jpg

Bharat NCAP safety rating protocol will include frontal impact, side impact and side pole impact tests awarding star rating for adult occupants (AOP) and child occupants (COP) Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP) has been rolled out by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways under Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Under this program, automakers will be able to offer their cars for testing as per Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197. Testing done under BNCAP will change the automotive scenario in India. While buyers will be assured of vehicle safety, automakers will be able to compete on a global platform. It will also help introduce safer driving practices, reduce the onus of healthcare and garner incentives from the insurance sector.

Benefits of testing cars under Bharat NCAP
Set to come into effect from 1st October 2023, this will make India the 5th country to have its very own crash testing rating system. Following its successful launch, as many as 30 cars have already been offered for crash testing under Bharat NCAP. It will involve a cost of around Rs. 60 lakh when done in India which would escalate to Rs 2.5 crores if a similar test were to be conducted overseas.

Tucson to be Hyundai’s first car to undergo Bharat NCAP crash test

Hyundai has submitted three models to the Bharat NCAP for crash test evaluations, with the Tucson SUV being among the first vehicles to undergo testing. The Tucson is slated to be followed by the Exter micro-SUV, and the outcomes for both cars are expected to be revealed within the next few months.Hyundai's goal is to secure a 5-star safety rating for its premier ICE vehicle in India.

The Indian version of the Tucson is outfitted with six airbags, ABS, ESC, three-point seatbelts, and seatbelt reminders for each individual seat as standard features. The high-end Tucson also boasts ADAS capabilities. However, Bharat NCAP does not consider advanced safety assist systems in their overall rating.

Upcoming Kia Sonet Facelift and Tata Punch tested by Bharat NCAP

FireShot Capture 393 - Tata Punch Snapped First Time With Six Airbags As Bharat NCAP Perform_ ...png

Much has been spoken about the Bharat NCAP safety norms, which will now be the new standards for crash test ratings for cars produced and sold in India. It seems that the Indian Government is soon going to give an official green signal to Bharat NCAP, as its official website has gone live. Going by the crash test images uploaded on the website, it seems that the Kia Sonet Facelift and Tata Punch are the first two cars tested under the new Bharat NCAP crash test norms.

Nitin Gadkari, the minister of road transport and highways, announced the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) earlier this year. The Bharat NCAP will be the new organization to test the safety ratings of a car and its performance under the impact of different types of crashes.

While the website of Bharat NCAP has gone live with a few pictures of cars on test, the organization is yet to reveal the crash test ratings of the cars which it has reportedly tested till now. The images on the website reveal that the cars tested by Bharat NCAP include the base-spec HTE variant of the Kia Sonet Facelift and a Tata Punch with sunroof and side and curtain airbags.

Kia has already announced that it will be launching the facelifted version of the Sonet compact SUV on 14th December 2023. We expect that the base-spec Sonet HTE seen in images uploaded by Bharat NCAP is the new facelifted version, and Kia might launch the Sonet facelift as the first car tested by Global NCAP, while also revealing the crash test ratings alongside the product launch.

In addition to the Kia Sonet HTE, another car which has been reportedly tested by Bharat NCAP is the Tata Punch, which, unlike the Sonet, has already been tested by Global NCAP, earning a commendable 5-star crash test rating. However, the Punch tested by Global NCAP in 2021 missed out on the sunroof and side and curtain airbags, as the model shown in Bharat NCAP crash test ratings.

Until now, the responsibility for the same was volunteered by Global NCAP, which has tested several cars made in India under its “Safer Cars for India” campaign. The new Bharat NCAP crash test ratings are reportedly set to become mandatory for cars made and sold in India. This new programme will also be replacing the “Safer Cars for India” programme conducted by Global NCAP for a decade.

Tata Harrier will be first car to be tested under Bharat NCAP crash test

There has been considerable buzz and speculation surrounding Bharat NCAP, the new safety standard for cars in India. A few days ago, the Bharat NCAP website went live, showcasing crash test images of two cars available in India – the Kia Sonet and Tata Punch. While these images confirmed that the Sonet and Punch underwent crash tests by Bharat NCAP, a recent report confirms that the Tata Harrier is the first domestically manufactured passenger car to undergo Bharat NCAP crash tests.

According to a recent report, it’s confirmed that the Tata Harrier has already undergone a series of crash tests conducted by Bharat NCAP, a program launched in August 2023. The safety ratings resulting from these tests for the Tata Harrier will be announced in the next 3-4 weeks. Notably, the new Tata Harrier, along with the new Tata Safari, received a commendable five-star rating from Global NCAP at their launch in October 2023.

The updated Tata Harrier arrives with several exterior design tweaks, a revamped cabin layout offering more features, and claims to offer enhanced safety with standard six airbags and ADAS in top-spec variants. However, the Harrier remains mechanically unchanged, continuing to offer the 2.0-litre 170 PS diesel engine with options of 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions.

Apart from Tata Motors, which initiated sending the first car to Bharat NCAP for crash test ratings, other automakers such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Mahindra, and Kia have also begun submitting their models to Bharat NCAP. All carmakers and automotive brands operating in India have extended their support to Bharat NCAP, recognizing that conducting vehicle tests in India rather than sending them abroad for Global NCAP crash tests will be more cost-effective.

Launched in August 2023, Bharat NCAP is a standardized safety program by the Central Government of India aimed at assigning safety ratings to passenger cars sold in the country through crash tests. With Bharat NCAP’s introduction in India, Global NCAP announced the discontinuation of its “Safer Cars for India” initiative, specifying it will no longer conduct crash tests for cars from India. The Central Government has partnered with the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) in Pune to conduct Bharat NCAP crash tests on cars sold in India.
