Toyota has filed a trademark for the GR Corolla nameplate, ahead of the hot hatchback’s expected launch in 2023. When it arrives, it’s expected to be fitted with the same three-cylinder engine found in the new GR Yaris.

The engine destined for use in the GR Corolla is Toyota’s turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol unit, codenamed G16E-GTS. It’s one of the world’s most powerful three-cylinder production engines, offering an output of 268bhp in the Japanese-delivered versions of the GR Yaris. However, it remains unclear whether the GR Corolla will boast the same performance.

Even so, a mildly de-tuned version of the GR Yaris’s engine could easily give the GR Corolla an output of around 250bhp – and, like the baby hot hatchback, it’ll send drive through a six-speed manual transmission. Also, the Corolla’s TNGA underpinnings, which includes multi-link suspension, would give Gazoo’s engineers a solid base for a hot hatchback.

Like the new GR Yaris, we expect the new Toyota GR Corolla will focus on all-round ability rather than outright performance, becoming a rival for the Ford Focus ST and Hyundai i30 N rather than the track-hardened Renault Mégane R.S. Trophy and Honda Civic Type R. Our exclusive images preview how the new model will look.

Toyota GR Corolla Teased Ahead Of Market Debut

Toyota USA has taken to social media platforms to prepare for the next hot hatch – the GR Corolla and its launch is expected around the corner. Now the rear of the new Toyota GR Corolla has a very GR Yaris feel and especially the way the wider rear track has been made. Obviously, the teaser image has received a photoshop treatment to give it an anime appeal, but the design elements on the back are pretty noticeable. For example, the C-shaped taillights, steeply angled rear windshield, and a long rear bumper sporting rather sleek tailpipes are something we’re familiar with. That said, we can’t clearly see the design changes up front that were shown in the previous teaser, but yes! The fascia looks a bit more aggressive.
