Thank you all for your wishes , still experimenting with the camera and learning the basics[:D]. Was out of net for 2 weeks and just now getting back. Took a few snaps which i will share in the respective thread.

@ Smooth rider Go for Nikon D5100 , i think its only a little costlier than D3100 but you get a lot of cool features for that price.

@cooldhaya, "cool" features in nikon camera??

It would be understated if just said "cool"...

The D3100 & EOS1100 are the replacements for the D3000 & EOS1000. I have a D3000. The D3100 has Live View, Video recording and another feature more than the D3000. Go for the D5100 as suggested by Dhaya if budget permits. Otherwise the D3100 is fine. Don't know much about the Canons but with the Nikon upgrades they are on par now. If really on a shoestring budget see if you can get a sparingly used D3000 or 1000D.
One thing to keep in mind is that Nikon, Olympus & Pentax make only cameras and nothing else. So they must be good at it. Canon is close but they also make printers, copiers etc. Sony makes everything. However their camera division is basically Minolta another specialist camera manufacturer.

I just picked up a D90 and am figuring out the features. Have downloaded a few books to help me out.

Didn't like the feel of D5100 or 550D. D90 felt right in my hands.

D5100 and 550D felt like toys compared to D90.

Though it is costlier than the other 2, the build quality is good. I also like the way the controls are placed. I do not want a DSLR to take videos.

I was aiming at D7000, but it was way out of my reach.

Personally, what do you think I should go for, A tripod or a monopod, for travelling?

Can I not use a tripod as a Monopod in crowded areas by not spreading the tripod's legs apart?

Tripod is always better, one can use it even without without spreading its legs. and . a monopod becomes a waste when shooting at low lights etc.

I got one monopod which i bought on the go when I realized that I forgot to take my tripod, but the same monopod dint help me much it is good only for critical area where you dont even have place to keep one of you foot

DSLR is use for viewing purposes, the mirror reflects the light coming through the attached lens upwards at a 90-degree angle.DSLRs are often preferred by professional still photographers because they allow an accurate preview of framing close to the moment of exposure, and because DSLRs allow the user to choose from a variety of interchangeable lenses.[:)][:)]

OLD D40x , D60 and D90's have the best results compared to newer generation DSLR's
My Dad deals in these things and I was asking him what should I get? He said dnt get any D3100,5000 and 7000. they are not worth it. get a used d90 instead results are astonishing

same for Canon he doesn't like 1000d, 550 or 60d. He said there results aren't as good .

@ jayadev

I think I will go for tripod. I can put shutter release in self timer mode for additional stability during low light shooting. And, like you say, I can also use it like a monopod in tight situations.

@ codename47

I also did a lot of research online before buying D90. This is also the only one with penta-prism instead of penta-mirror in this price range.
BTW D90 is still in production. You can pick up a new one.

That is due to lesser density Sensors.. but people are people who believe in numbers.

10 mp D80 deliver much better "sharper" image than D90 with 12.9mp.

any good camera having above 2 mp sensor is just more than enough for Incredible images .

With higher density sensors there are lot of artifacts like smudging ,colour fringes, etc etc

but kind of allurement which a modern camera offer cannot be overlooked, like stop photography ,interface, compatibility ,ease of use, ruggedness which may not be as much in older cameras.

If I need Tack sharp pictures I would go for D80 , I want incredible colur renderings I would choose D90 or D300.
one can go for d7000 for its additional video capabilities and resolutions means bigger picture and more room for cropping..
Pro camera:- D700 with 12.1 mp is the best camera i ever found in market.

when it comes to canon they are good in Ps cameras. they are exceptionally good for sports and journalism use for thier fast cameras.. but Nikon have an upper edge in it when it comes to dslr .
