Their Comments:

What are you packing under the hood, Mr new Nexon Automatic?

While he noticed that the gearbox was an automatic, he could not have a clear look at the gear lever due to it being dark. It was a completely fresh car, with new & shining camouflage and with seats covered in new plastics.

Both of us suspect that it's the newly-developed DCT box being put through it's paces for the very first time.

The speculated GB is from Punch Powertrain:

Few things about the upcoming Punch Powertrain's DT1 DCT automatic transmission which is quite different from the regular DCTs:

Punch Powertrain conceived and patented a new way of realizing the dual clutch principle. The second clutch in this new DCT is a normal multiplate clutch, however the first clutch represents an additional planetary gearset ratio that can be engaged between the engine and the transmission. This allows the unit to shift seamlessly between 7 forward ratios, using only 4 gear pairs and one side shaft (similar to MT). This results in a lighter, more compact product, while offering a considerable cost reduction.

Punch Powertrain's DT1 Dual Clutch Transmission is intended for vehicles with maximum engine torque of up to 200 Nm and engine power of up to 110 kW. The large first gear ratio (1:18) is optimized for this application, resulting in smooth accelerations in any circumstance and strong capabilities on inclines. The overall wide ratio coverage of up to 8, enables the transmission to operate with a favorable fuel consumption.

Seems like the new DCT would might be a wet Clutch GB not a dry one like VW group or Hyundai DCT GB's.
Means low mantanince and less downtime. lol

The first mass market DCT in lines or maybe the best DCT for INDIA

Tata Nexon Test Mule Spied, Might Sport Venue-Like DCT

nexon-1536x864.jpg

According to the initial report, the test model’s gearshifts were too quick and smooth for it to have a manual transmission, thus prompting the belief in the possibility of a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. We’ve had multiple reports suggesting that Tata will be offering a DCT in the Altroz as well, along with a turbo-petrol engine. It does seem possible that Tata will also be extending this tech to Nexon.

Currently, the Tata Nexon is offered with two transmission options – a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed AMT. While the AMT gearbox is quite fuel-efficient and cost-effective, it is quite jerky and laggy – inherent problem with budget AMTs. Replacing it with a DCT would improve the driving experience especially for enthusiastic drivers. There will also be benefits in terms of performance, but that will come at a cost.

While there are plenty of advantages to having a DCT, the costs associated with it are quite high. If Tata is planning to add DCTs to its line-up, it will have to ensure cost-effectiveness as well. Of course, tech sharing is one of the easiest and best ways to reduce costs. If the same tech is used on the Altroz and the Nexon, the cost of manufacturing wouldn’t be as high. Thus, it would be a wise choice for Tata.

Tata Nexon DCT Teased? Launch Likely On September 3

tata-nexon-dct-teased-1.jpg

Tata Nexon DCT could sit at the top of the range upon arrival and is expected to be offered only with the petrol engine

Spied testing previously, the dual clutch automatic unit could be made available only with the petrol engine that received power bump upon BSVI compliance.

The teaser image does not reveal much except saying “3 days to go stay tuned to discover the #nexlevel”. It has the Nexon standing at the edge of a cliff wearing an orange body colour. If it turns out to be the DCT, expect it to sit at the top-of-the-range at around Rs. 12 lakh (ex-showroom) price tag.
