Talgo Series 9 in India

Finally after lots and lots of talk of bullet train in India in virtually every rail budget for the past few year, India will finally get to the real bullet train. The Talgo series 9, brought as completely built unit from Talgo, Spanish manufacturer, will land in Mumbai next week. The train has already been shipped from spain last week. From Mumbai it will be transported to Delhi, and trail runs will be begin between delhi and palwal. Post that final trails will run between Mum and Delhi,

The train though capable of doing 200 kmph, it will run aroud 160 kmph on existing infrastructure. It will cut down the travel time to 12 hours.

This indeed a great step towards modernising the railways. Sincerely wish best for this effort by our government

At last some progress in long long pending project. 160 is welcome but we are far far behind world. World is moving at 300-500 km/ph and we need to do a lot of catching. Lets hope once first hurdle is crossed, we will speed up the catching.

Well 160 will still be good considering the usage of existing infrastructure. To build completely new tracks will involve land acquisition (which itself will take 10s of years to complete) then laying or new track it will be a 20 year project itself. Even after that we dont know when an idiot would bring the car, bike or cattle on track and pose danger to the trains and self. there will be people trying to cross tracks and one major accident and entire project may be scrapped.

Any improvement is welcome. Let me tell you that high speed trains cannot run on our current tracks. We will be required to lay a new track or rebuild the current one. High speed trains do not run on open tracks which we see in India. They are fenced to prevent trespassing by animals and people. A huge infrastructure investment is required.

The current WAP7 locomotive can do 200kmph max. The new Gatimaan express with the WAP5 locomotive does 160kmph.
It should be 180kmph to make it a real superfast train, forget Bullet train.

Doing high speed is not the only thing. Building infrastructure is also equally important. For instance,
For a high speed train, traction control should be automatic across all the station (no manual intervention)
The track should be fenced to prevent animals and humans and vehicles crossing it.
Remove all the railway crossings.
the banking of the tracks and the track fittings to take the load of a banked train at high speeds. (thus the requirement of lighter trains.

All this will take years to implement. Instead what has been done is procure trains that can do 200kmph but make them run at 160 and using existing infra. So I would still say it as a progress. Finally we will get to see some modern looking trains and slowly we can expect the speed to be increased from 160-170-180 and so on as the track infra develops incrementally.

Talgo breaks the indian record, travels at 180kmph on indian rails. Powered by indian made locomotive hauling 9 lightweight talgo coaches the train breaks Gatiman express record of 160kmph.

Indian railways now aim for 220kmph for the Mumbai Delhi trail run. In the trail run, gunny bags with sand are placed to simulate passenger load.

Imported train!!!
What happened to Make in India??, we have got separate steel ministry, the minister must be thinking what the heck the stock steel in our quarries is meant for?

India cannot make locomotives all are imported . The technology for making locomotives are still in the western countries. We build coaches for these locomotives locally. The imported trains are for testing and these are are fully built and are light to withstand the forces which act when going high speed.

yes the coaches are imported and its good that these are coz if they will try to design it in India then we will get to travel them in maybe after 4-5 years.

I would say that government should try to introduce some private companies in Railways as well and am sure we will see Bullet train in next two years or so.

No not as of now however our existing tracks are capable of 230+ with some changes but for that fencing and hi tech management is required. It can be done only if private companies can get the job like toll plaza or say Delhi metro projects as we know the speed of working of Govt entities
