Skoda Superb teasers-2.jpg

The Skoda Superb has been teased in both its hatchback and estate forms ahead of a full reveal later this year. Both will be based on a heavily upgraded version of the current car’s MQB underpinnings, but feature substantial changes everywhere else, with an all-new design inside and out, plus a much wider range of mild and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

As well as gaining the latest electrified tech, Skoda’s next Superb will also get a slight increase in length and wheelbase, unlocking even more space in the already cavernous interior. The latest preview reveals that both hatchback and estate will share a largely similar silhouette to the current models.

Alongside these new teaser images, our exclusive renders based on inside information and spy images highlight the Superb’s indicative design evolution. These reveal a more three-dimensional grille situated between thinner headlights with new-generation LED technology. Beneath, we expect to see a new lower grille shape and isolated air intakes at the side. The classic Skoda badge indent from the bonnet to the grille remains, but the superbly integrated (no pun intended) clamshell bonnet has been watered down due to a more complex headlight shape.

From the side, its inflated dimensions are revealed by a generous rear overhang on both saloon and estate, meanwhile a Skoda-typical razor-sharp crease has also appeared and towards the rear we see a restrained bumper design. Expect to see a larger form of the C-shaped rear light unit from the new Fabia, creating a more dynamic light graphic for following traffic at night.

There will be no pure-electric Superb in this generation, instead, we’ll see VW Group latest generation of combustion engines, each compatible with Euro 7 emissions rules to be introduced in 2025. While the popularity of diesel has waned, we expect to see it return on the new Superb with a variety of TDI options, ranging from 148bhp to 197bhp.

Petrol power should be available in mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid guises, with the potential for it to borrow the more powerful Passat GTE’s powertrain. It’s anticipated that the updated MQB platform will accommodate a longer-range plug-in setup, with a larger battery that gives the PHEV Superb an ability to surpass 62 miles (100km) of electric-only running.

Yet while the exterior design and technical make up represents an evolutionary path, the new Superb’s interior will feature a complete overhaul, drawing a much closer parallel with Skoda’s all-electric models. This has been a controversial area within the VW Group, thanks to a mixed response for the interface within the eighth-gen Golf.

Skoda may avoid some of these problems through better use of its infotainment screens. We previously spoke to former Skoda CEO Thomas Schäfer (now CEO of VW), who said that more fundamental revisions will arrive with the Superb. “The car’s interior is a huge step forward,” he told us. “It will carry our new user language, which extends to what you touch and feel. Superb will get it first, and then [the second-generation] Kodiaq after.

New Skoda Superb: official images of 2024 family-friendly estate

Skoda Superb Estate prototype-3.jpg

Skoda has released teaser pictures of the upcoming fourth-generation Superb in the past, but the shadowy side profile drawings gave little away. Now, this new set of images gives us our best look yet at the new 2024 Skoda Superb.

Skoda Superb Estate prototype-4.jpg

We’ve actually driven the new Superb in estate form where it impressed on many fronts, despite still being a prototype. The car is expected to go on sale in the UK by early 2024 after a full, official reveal this November.

Skoda Superb Estate prototype-5.jpg

The Superb Estate in the latest images is still clad in camouflage but we can see evidence of a more three-dimensional grille situated between thinner headlights with new-generation LED technology. Beneath, there’s a new lower grille shape and isolated air intakes at the side. The classic Skoda badge indent from the bonnet to the grille remains, but the clamshell bonnet isn’t as seamlessly integrated due to a more complex headlight shape.

From the side, there’s a generous rear overhang on both saloon and estate. Meanwhile, a typical razor-sharp crease has appeared on the flanks and towards the rear we see a restrained bumper design. The C-shaped rear light unit is similar to that of the new Fabia, creating a more dynamic light graphic for following traffic at night.

The new Skoda Superb sits on a revised version of the MQB evo platform and Skoda proudly states that it was tasked with the development of the chassis, which will ultimately be used for the next-generation VW Passat. There’s a slight increase in length and wheelbase, unlocking even more space in the already cavernous interior. Boot space has even gone up from 660 to 690 litres in the Superb Estate

There will be no pure-electric Superb in this generation, instead, we’ll see the VW Group’s latest generation of combustion engines. While the popularity of diesel has waned, there’s still a choice of two 2.0-litre diesel options, with either 148bhp or 192bhp.

Petrol powered is offered in three forms. For the first time there’s a mild-hybird option - a 1.5-litre TSI with 148bhp. A 2.0-litre turbocharged unit comes with either 204bhp or 265bhp and there’s a 1.5-litre TSI petrol mated to a 25.7kWh battery in the plug-in hybrid version. Skoda says the extra battery size will enable a pure-electric range of over 62 miles, increasing from the old PHEV’s 44-mile maximum.

The new Superb’s interior will feature a complete overhaul, drawing a much closer parallel with Skoda’s all-electric models.

2024 Skoda Superb and Kodiaq interior revealed

2024-skoda-superb-interior (1).jpg

Ahead of their premieres scheduled for this fall, the next Skoda Superb and Kodiaq reveal their all-new dashboards providing a mélange of modern and traditional. Although the two cars get a massive display like so many other new models, you still have a few conventional buttons flanked by three rotary dials with built-in screens featuring a 1.25-inch (32-millimeter) diagonal. These are known as Smart Dials and provide access to various settings.

The functionality of the small screens depends on the level of equipment. The two outer rotary push-buttons control the interior temperature as well as the seat heating/ventilation for the driver and front passenger. The one in the center has several functions, including volume, fan speed, air direction, smart AC, map zoom, and driving modes. Pressing down on the central dial allows the user to switch between functions, and it can be configured through the infotainment's menu.

Speaking of the infotainment, the 2024 Superb and Kodiaq get a 13-inch touchscreen as well as a 10-inch digital instrument cluster complemented by a head-up display. One of the most important changes compared to the outgoing mode is the position of the gear selector since it has been relocated to the steering wheel column. Doing so has enabled Skoda to clean up the area between the front seats and improve storage.

In case you can't tell which is which, the Superb is the one with the vertical fins on the dashboard and "hidden" air vents whereas the Kodiaq has more leather on the passenger side of the dash along with vertical vents. The LED ambient light strip goes below the central air vents on the liftback/wagon and over it on the SUV. Both have a USB-C port in the rearview mirror as well as smartphone wireless charging at 15W, with the Kodiaq offering active cooling for two devices.

In typical Skoda fashion, there's a dedicated area in the front door to store an umbrella. There are up to four USB-C ports with a 45W power output, an ice scraper, eco-friendly, massaging seats, and upholstery made entirely out of recycled polyester.

The Superb and Kodiaq will go on sale in 2024 and are likely to be the company's last new ICE cars.
