You are the first person to say this , at least in this forum. Not many people are happy by this odd-even rule and they forgot to think about future. Are we seriously gonna leave our kids amidst smog?
maybe the auto car enthusiasts value a 4 wheel tin piece more valued than own life or family life & health [surprise]

More like, not aware of the consequences? When I was asking my friend who is just working in same IT park as me, refused to carpool with me, even though we are pretty much leaving/arriving at same time and his house is just a couple of blocks away from mine. When I told him, I am okay with joining him, he politely refused!! It may be personal reason for him, but if he stopped for a moment to think about what we are going to leave behind for our future generations, he will get a clear picture. I stopped arguing with him.

My bike just went kaput and I am left with no other option than commute by car. And to be frank, I am much more comfortable in bike than driving a car just for me. It's not about money, but about perception. And like rubbing a salt in the wound, my current financial situation won't allow me buy a new bike!! [frustration]

I wish that rule will be imposed in my city. Although smog and pollution is less here, I can see that it will not be same for long time with the increasing number of vehicles around me! And it'd be like precautionary step rather than late curing!

lets say government can link this to your AADHAR then they can issue metro passes with AADHAR as SSN link your gas bills your petrol bills and your electricity bills and so on so forth and one who is not using public transport can be penalised by increase in the fare of LPG or ELECTRICITY or high rate of interest in the bank loan that ways you can encourage public to use public transport however, once this is done the government will have to work on public transport infrastructure as well as the quality of transportation.

Nitin, the underlined part in the quoted text is the apathy which the common man has been facing for years now and with passage of time the problem has multiplied. For penalizing a common man with increase in prices/fares/taxes govt. does not necessarily have to invest in betterment of services. Atleast this has been happening at large in India. Citizens at large here are made to use highly unsafe/unreliable and sub-standard/unhygienic public transport and if you ask or take a census of their annual taxes, you'll surely get a clear picture that inspite of paying regular taxes which are in-turn to be used for betterment of public transport and other such provisions is still not put to use at large.

i know i have seen the HRTC buses man they are so unhygienic and rash driven. everytime i have to visit my inlaws i have to change either to train or head to ISBT most of the time i book connecting trains to save me the hassle of getting into these buses. Volvos are for name sake they are just as dirty as the local buses. However here in Karnataka the bus services are good compared to Delhi. Nice in city volvo buses in Bangalore. and Luxury semi luxury and volvos ply from and to almost all cities of Karnataka also we have quite a large chunk of this is even privatized hence each owner maintains the cleanliness to woe customers to use their services. similar things can be tried out elsewhere in India. What we don't do here is the state government does not look at other states which are excelling in some things than others and have look as to what are measures they are adopting to do so and how this can be implemented in ones own state.

Government of India imposes varying taxes to fill its coffers.
But it earns most of its income in taxes on Tobacco, Liquor and Fuel as they are most consumed and people will
not hesitate to pay taxes and spend on them what-so-ever. If the fuel prices fall they will loose heavily on taxes.
In order to recover the amount they increase the exise duty. That is the prime reason for the rise.

normally petrol is cheaper as it is the first product that is got while refining crude oil, diesel should be costlier, however as most of the public transport rely on diesel vehicles hence diesel prices are regulated till date.
