The first product from MG’s upcoming product onslaught is expected to be the Cloud EV which will be a 4.3-meter-long vehicle that looks like a cross between a large hatchback and an MPV. The Cloud EV is sold under the Wuling brand name by parent brand SAIC in Indonesia and as the Baojun Yunduo in China, but for India, it will be rebranded as an MG and will be locally produced here. A heavily camouflaged test mule of the Cloud EV was recently spotted testing on our roads ahead of its launch in the coming months. Here’s what you can expect.

The Cloud EV has the typical stance and shape of an MPV, but it's only a 5-seater with two rows of seating, in essence, looking very much like a large-ish hatchback. It has a minimalistic design with flush door handles, clean surfacing and full-width LED light bars at the front and rear. And although it can’t be seen in these images here, the Cloud EV has a stepped front-end design with the headlamps mounted on the bumper which makes for quite an interesting look. What’s distinctly visible, though, is a large glasshouse that seamlessly wraps around at the rear, the extended quarter glass sections and steeply raked front and rear windscreens.

The theme of minimalism continues on the inside with very minimal use of physical buttons and controls. Being a born EV, it has the interior packaging advantages allowing for lots of space. The dashboard is dominated by a large touchscreen infotainment, there’s a digital instrument cluster and the front seat backrest can be fully reclined for what is called the “sofa mode with 135-degree backseat recline”. The AC vents are seamlessly integrated into a horizontal trim on the dashboard and door pads feature quicky-looking circular speakers. It also gets an ADAS suite with a 360-degree camera in markets abroad.

The Cloud EV gets two battery pack options overseas – a 37.9kWh and a 50.6kWh, with 360km and 460km range, respectively. It’s powered by a front-axle mounted, permanent magnet synchronous motor that produces 134hp, but it remains to be seen which of these versions will be brought here.

Sources say that MG could be looking to price the Cloud EV under Rs 20 lakh in India, which means it will find itself right in the thick of the EV market and rival the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400; it will be more affordable than MG’s own ZS EV which has been a steady seller for the brand. The key to an aggressive pricing for the upcoming Cloud EV will have to be high levels of localisation, including that of the battery pack.

MG Cloud EV teased before launch

20240726022339_MG_Cloud_teaser_wm.png

Just a month after the last round of India-spec MG Cloud spy shots surfaced online, new images have come to light that provide details on the upcoming EV’s interior. MG Motor India has also released a new teaser of its upcoming EV before Cloud prices are revealed during this year's festive season.

While most of the dashboard of the model spied is covered, a few details can be gleaned. It seem like the India-spec Cloud EV will have the same fully-digital instrument cluster and large, floating infotainment touchscreen seen on the model for Indonesia, where it is sold under the Wuling brand name. Other details that can be seen include the two-spoke steering with controls for the infotainment system and the the horizontal slats that span the length of the minimalist dashboard, which cover all four AC vents.

The teaser sent out by MG Motor India today also hints that the crossover will come with a sunroof. In addition, the Cloud will sport slim all-LED headlights and have an LED light bar on the nose above the grille area, connecting the headlight units. The MG logo also seems to be illuminated.

As the Cloud is a born EV, it has the interior packaging advantages that are typical of the breed, which should bode well for this 5-seater. The model aboard also gets fully reclinable front seats (to enable a ‘sofa mode’), circular door-mounted speakers, a 360-degree camera, and an ADAS suite. It remains to be seen if these features will make it to the India-spec Cloud.

Previous spy shots of the Cloud EV on test showed that the crossover’s overall silhouette is a bit of a cross between an MPV and a hatchback, though MG Motor India calls it a CUV: crossover utility vehicle. Like the interior, the exterior also follows a minimalist design with flush door handles, clean surfaces, and full-width LED light bars at the rear as well as the front. While the Cloud does have a large glasshouse and extended quarter glass sections, the front and rear windscreens are sharply raked.

While the battery specs for the India model are still under wraps, in international markets, the Cloud gets two battery pack options: a 37.9kWh with 360km of range and a 50.6kWh unit with up to 460km. In either case, the battery powers a 134hp front axle-mounted electric motor.

Cloud EV to be sold as MG Windsor in India

MG Motor India is all set to launch a new EV in the Indian market based on the Wuling Cloud EV sold abroad by parent group SAIC. We can now confirm that the CUV will be launched as ‘Windsor EV’ in the Indian market.

WindsorEV.jpg

MG’s latest teaser video asks viewers to decipher the name of the upcoming EV with the help of jumbled letters. However, the name and logo trademarks filed by the manufacturer a few months ago confirm that it will indeed be called Windsor EV. MG will be officially revealing the name of the car on August 5.

The Windsor EV (Wuling Cloud EV) gets two battery pack options abroad: a 37.9kWh and a 50.6kWh, with 360km and 460km range, respectively. It’s powered by a front-axle mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor that produces 134hp, but it's yet to be confirmed which version will be made available here.

While the Windsor EV has the shape and stance of an MPV, it accommodates only five passengers across two rows, which essentially makes it a large hatchback. Dubbed a ‘CUV’, the Windsor EV is expected to be priced under Rs 20 lakh.

MG Windsor Electric CUV to get segment-largest Infotainment System

mg-windsor-ev-infotainment-system.jpg.jpg

A day after spy images of the upcoming MG Windsor EV surfaced online, a new teaser video has given out more insights into the highly anticipated all-electric crossover. According to the teaser, MG Windsor EV will feature a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system. MG has christened it the ‘Grand View Touch Display’.

This will be the largest infotainment screen in the segment and will offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivities. This will be similar to the one found on Wuling Cloud EV sold in global markets. The manufacturer seems to have intentions of making the beholder draw visual connections with the screens used for in-flight entertainment. So suggest the teaser! The infotainment unit will run a newly developed entertainment engine co-developed with Jio. There will be support for in-car gaming and streaming services. The built-in e-sim will also be used for OTT streaming and other entertainment solutions.

Other features expected on the upcoming Windsor EV include a (likely) 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, large, horizontally positioned AC vents, a 360-degree camera, modern two-spoke steering wheel with integrated controls. Previous teasers had also confirmed a large panoramic glass roof.

The rear seat will be able to seat three abreast and offer the option to recline up to 135 degrees, to bring about a ‘sofa-like’ experience. There will be cosy adjustable headrests as well. There will also be a central armrest at the rear and the leather upholstery will have a quilted finish.

The Windsor EV will have a strong focus on safety. The platform and body shell will have strong reinforcements and there will be more safety tech offered as well. Expect 3-point seat belts on all seats, airbags, ABS with EBD, parking sensors (both front and rear), and a level 2 ADAS suite (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).

While MG is yet to officially reveal the exterior and technical details of the Windsor EV, speculations suggest that it will feature a wide air dam, a full-width LED light bar, front door-mounted outside rearview mirrors, a wrap-around glasshouse, 18-inch alloy wheels, and flush door handles.

As for the powertrain, the MG Windsor is expected to offer two battery options: 37.9kWh and 50.6kWh. The electric motor, mounted on the front axle, could deliver up to 134 bhp. The global-spec Windsor EV with the 37.9kWh battery offers a claimed range of 360km, while the larger 50.6kWh battery provides a range of 460km on a single charge. The larger battery pack could be borrowed directly from the ZS EV.

Windsor EV will strengthen MG’s electric vehicle portfolio in India, and could offer a combination of advanced features, modern design, and an impressive range of powertrains for potential buyers.

The Windsor EV, positioned as MG Motor India’s first Intelligent CUV and their latest electric vehicle, is a rebadged version of the Wuling Cloud EV sold internationally.

The Windsor is set to launch on September 11 and will sit between the Comet EV and ZS EV in MG’s Indian lineup. Some reports suggest that select dealerships in India have already begun accepting bookings for the EV, ahead of its official debut.

A sub-Rs. 20 lakh price is what’s being speculated for the MG Windsor. At this price, it’ll square off against the Tata Curvv.EV SUV Coupe, which was just launched last month.
