Maruti Suzuki has launched its latest offering — the Fronx crossover coupe — in India, with prices ranging from Rs 7.47 lakh for the base variants Sigma trim and going up to Rs 13.14 lakh for the top-spec Alpha trim with the turbo-petrol engine (ex-showroom, India). Bookings for the new Fronx crossover coupe are open online and via the brand’s premium Nexa dealer network, with the token amount set at Rs 11,000. The Fronx is also available via Maruti Suzuki’s Subscribe service at an all-inclusive monthly subscription fee starting from Rs 17,378.

The Fronx will be offered in five trim levels — Sigma, Delta, Delta+, Zeta, and Alpha, with the top-spec model also being offered with dual-tone variants for an additional Rs 16,000. Maruti first showcased the Fronx back at the 2023 Auto Expo, and it is a crossover derivative of the Baleno premium hatchback, sharing its platform, features and some mechanical elements.

There is plenty of differentiation offered by Maruti between the new Fronx crossover and the Baleno hatchback. As such, the Fronx has more in common with the Grand Vitara than it does with the Baleno at first glance. The Fronx gets an upright front end with its hexagonal mesh grille and a sculpted bumper, but it is the split headlight design that makes it look almost like a Grand Vitara.

In profile, there are some aspects of the Fronx that are reminiscent of the Baleno such as the glass house and shoulder line. That said, the Fronx also gets body cladding, increased ground clearance, new multi-spoke alloy wheels, and a more sloping roofline, all of which help it stand out. The rear of the Fronx features a more raked windscreen with a relatively upright lower tailgate section, along with new full-width LED taillights that look like they have been plucked straight from the more expensive Grand Vitara.

The interior of the Fronx crossover has the same layout and design as the standard Baleno hatchback. Hence, it comes with a layered dashboard, a free-standing touchscreen infotainment system and a silver accent that runs across the dashboard.

In terms of equipment, the top-spec Alpha trim comes with a 9.0-inch Smartplay Pro+ touchscreen infotainment system which gets Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa support, voice command support, ‘Suzuki Connect’ connected car tech, HUD, automatic climate control, tilt and telescopic steering adjustment, auto-dimming IRVM keyless entry and go, and 360-degree cameras. However, the crossover still misses out on features like an electric sunroof, ambient lighting and rear centre armrest (features offered by some of its rivals).

Under the hood, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx is available with two petrol engine options — a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder DualJet engine making 90 hp and 113 Nm and a more powerful 1.0-litre, BoosterJet petrol engine that develops 100 hp and 148 Nm (claimed to do 0-60 kph sprint in 5.3 seconds). Both engine options come with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard, with the 1.2-litre DualJet getting a five-speed AMT automatic gearbox option and the 1.0-litre BoosterJet getting a six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox option.

Maruti Fronx Delta+ (O) launched; gets six airbags

Maruti Suzuki has introduced a new mid-level variant for the Fronx in the country. Called Delta+ (O), the new variant is priced from Rs 8.93 lakh, and can only be had with the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.

The Delta+ (O) variant sits between Delta+ and Zeta variants, however, misses out on the 1.0-litre, turbo-petrol engine unlike the two. The Delta+ (O) variant gets a total of six airbags as opposed to the dual frontal airbags seen on the Delta+ variant. This means that the Delta+ (O) is the most affordable Maruti Fronx variant be offered with this safety feature.

Apart from the additional side and curtain airbags, no other changes have been made to the new variant. The Delta+ (O) variants cost Rs 15,000 more than the corresponding Delta+ variants with the dual airbags. Check out this list of the 10 most affordable cars and SUVs in India with six airbags in May 2024. Despite the introduction of the new Delta+ (O) variant, the Maruti Fronx isn’t a part of the list.

The Fronx can be had with either a 1.2-litre NA petrol and 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine options. The former makes 90hp and 113Nm and is also available with an optional CNG kit, while the latter produces 100hp and 148Nm torque. Transmission options include a standard 5-speed MT, a 5-speed AMT for the NA petrol engine, and a 6-speed torque converter automatic option for the turbo-petrol unit.

The Marut Fronx continues to be priced from Rs 7.51 lakh to Rs 12.88 lakh, and rivals the Toyota Taisor, the recently launched Mahindra XUV 3XO, Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet, among other similarly priced compact SUVs.
