Production-spec Mahindra BE.05 electric SUV teased

While the Thar.e concept and the Scorpio-N-based Global Pik Up concept grabbed all the limelight at Mahindra’s Futurescape event in Cape Town, South Africa, the manufacturer also teased its upcoming BE.05 electric SUV in a close-to-production form. The Mahindra BE.05 is set to be launched by October 2025.

The BE.05 was first revealed on Independence Day last year, along with the rest of the BE range of SUVs. The electric SUV has been spotted in India earlier this year and we’ve also seen its interior, however, those were pre-production test mules. The model seen in the new teasers appears to be production-ready.

The first thing that becomes apparent from the teaser is that the BE.05 will get a large panoramic glass roof, but it’s difficult to tell from these images if it will be openable or fixed. The BE.05’s bonnet is sculpted out while the front windshield is steeply raked. Further back, there’s a roof-mounted spoiler that appears to be split and it features an LED lightbar on the tailgate.

The teaser also provides a glimpse of the BE.05’s interior. As was shown on the concept, this version also gets the wraparound effect around the driver with twin screens for the infotainment and instrument cluster.

Based on Mahindra’s INGLO platform, the BE.05 will be offered with 2WD and 4WD powertrains. The electric motors will be sourced from Volkswagen, with 2WD models using a rear-mounted motor producing a solid 210kW (286hp) and 535Nm. The 4WD models, meanwhile, will get a second motor on the front axle producing 80kW (109hp) and 135Nm, although the combined system output is yet to be disclosed. However, Mahindra has stated that the powertrains are tooled up and undergoing testing already.

As for the battery, the BE.05 will use a 79kWh unit with LFP cells (unlike the XUV400’s NMC-chemistry). The LFP cells are claimed to have a greater energy density, a slower discharge rate, no thermal propagation and charging times of 0-80 percent in 30 minutes.

Once launched in October 2025, the Mahindra BE.05 SUV will sit above the XUV400 EV and will directly rival the Tata Curvv EV, which will go on sale in 2024.
