Hyundai has launched the Exter, its smallest and most affordable SUV in our market, with introductory prices starting from Rs 6 lakh and going up to Rs 9.32 lakh for the top-spec trim (all prices ex-showroom, India). The automatic trims start at Rs 7.97 lakh and CNG trims start at Rs 8.24 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

The Exter is powered by a 1.2-litre, naturally aspirated, four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 83hp and 114Nm of peak torque that is shared with other models such as the Nios, i20 and Venue. Gearbox options include either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. In the CNG-spec, it produces 69hp and 95.2Nm, and gets just the manual gearbox option.

Barring the base-spec E trim, all petrol variants are available with both MT and AMT gearboxes, while the CNG kit can be had on the mid-spec S and SX trims. The three SX trims also get paddle shifters with the AMT gearbox.

Hyundai is claiming a fuel economy rating of 19.4kpl for the manual and 19.2kpl for the AMT; the factory-fitted CNG option offers a much superior fuel economy of 27.10kpl in comparison.

Its dashboard design has been carried over from the Nios and Aura, but there are a few key differences. Firstly, it gets an all-black colour scheme instead of the grey/black or bronze/black interior seen on the Nios and Aura, respectively. The Exter also gets a fully digital instrument cluster with a 4.2-inch MID, which is seen in more expensive Hyundais like the i20 and Verna.

The patterned effect on the dashboard, door pads and around the gear lever has also been carried over. Higher variants get semi-leatherette seat upholstery finished in dual-tone black and olive-green shades. It, however, misses out on an armrest for the rear seats.

On the features front, the biggest talking points are two segment-first features – a single-pane sunroof and a factory-fitted dashcam with dual cameras (front and rear). Other features include automatic projector headlamps, keyless entry and go, an 8-inch touchscreen, automatic climate control, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless charging, in-built navigation, connected car tech, voice-activated commands in multiple languages and over-the-air (OTA) updates.

Safety features include six airbags, ESC, hill assist control, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and camera, three-point seatbelt and seatbelt reminders for all seats, and ISOFIX anchorages. These are available as standard on the SX, SX(O) and SX(O) Connect trims, but can also be had as optional extras on the lower-spec E and S trims.

Hyundai Exter waiting period extends to more than a year

For the lower-spec EX and EX(O) variants of the Hyundai Exter, waiting periods have stretched up to 1 year in certain cities. The Exter range in India starts at an introductory price of Rs 5.99 lakh for the EX variant, but it is expected to increase shortly. Other variants like S, S(O), SX, SX(O), and SX(O) Connect are also experiencing waiting periods of up to 5-6 months.

With these extended waiting times, the Hyundai Exter is giving its direct rivals, such as the Tata Punch and Citroen C3, a run for their money. Additionally, the Exter is also denting the sales of similarly-priced compact hatchbacks and crossovers, including popular models like the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Ignis, Baleno, Fronx, Renault Kiger, and Nissan Magnite. Surprisingly, it has even become more appealing than other Hyundai offerings with similar price tags, such as the Grand i10 Nios, Aura, and i20.

Hyundai Exter Knight Edition coming soon: Teaser released

exter-knight-edition-1.jpg

Hyundai is all set to launch a special edition of their entry-level SUV, Exter, in the market. The manufacturer recently teased us with an image of the upcoming version of the Exter SUV. From the teaser image, it looks like Hyundai will be launching an all-black version of the Exter, which is likely to be called the Knight Edition. Before the Exter, Hyundai has launched Knight Editions of the Venue and the pre-facelift Creta in the market.

exter-knight-edition-2.jpg

In the teaser that has now surfaced online, we see a small portion of the rear of the Exter SUV, which is finished in black. We see a red accent on the tailgate of the SUV. Apart from the red accent, the Exter is expected to get a blacked-out roof, pillars, and spoiler. The alloy wheels on this SUV will also get a black treatment with red paint on the calipers.

On the tailgate, we also expect to see the Knight Edition badge under the Exter logo. The logos and grille are also expected to get the black treatment. Just like the exterior, the interior of the car would also get the black treatment. We expect to see the red accents on the AC vents and other trims in the cabin of the Exter too.

Other than this, Hyundai might also offer Knight Edition-themed floor mats and other accessories with the Exter. Mechanically, everything is expected to be the same with this SUV. The Hyundai Exter is only available with a petrol engine. The SUV uses a 1.2-liter, naturally aspirated petrol engine that generates 81 Bhp and 113 Nm of peak torque. The micro SUV is available with both a 5-speed manual and an AMT gearbox option. The petrol version has a claimed economy of 19.1 kmpl.

Hyundai Exter new S Plus and S(O) Plus variants launched with a Sunroof, prices start from Rs 7.86 lakh

64b7b401627c0.jpg

The new variants get a sunroof and are available with the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engines and come with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT (automated manual transmission). With the new variants, the sunroof on the micro SUV has become more accessible by Rs 37,000 in the manual lineup and Rs 46,000 in the AMT lineup.

The new Exter S(O) Plus variant slots in between the mid-spec S(O) and SX variants that cost Rs 7.65 lakh and Rs 8.23 lakh, respectively. This new variant only comes with a 1.2-litre petrol engine (83 PS and 114 Nm), paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual transmission. There is no CNG powertrain on offer with the new Exter S(O) Plus.

The new Exter S Plus variant, on the other hand, slots between the mid-spec S and the SX variants, which cost Rs 8.23 lakh and Rs 8.90 lakh, respectively. This variant also comes with a 1.2-litre petrol engine (83 PS and 114 Nm) but is paired with a 5-speed AMT (automated manual transmission). No CNG option is available with this variant.

The only added feature to these new variants over the trim they are based on is a single-pane sunroof. The features suite carried over from their donor trim includes an 8-inch touchscreen and a semi-digital driver’s display. Other essential features include manual AC with rear vents, cruise control, electrically adjustable ORVMs (outside rearview mirrors) and all power windows. The S Plus variant gets electrically foldable ORVMs over the features offered in the S (O) Plus variant.

In terms of safety, both variants get six airbags (as standard), 3-point seatbelts for all seats, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and a hill-start assist.

Prices of the Hyundai Exter range from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10.43 lakh. The Hyundai Exter rivals the likes of the Tata Punch, Maruti Ignis, Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger, and Citroen C3, as well as the Toyota Taisor and Maruti Fronx sub-4m crossovers.

All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi
