Honda has revealed the new eleventh-generation Civic hatchback for Europe, which arrives following the reveal of the four-door saloon model already on sale in the United States.

Honda-Civic-static.jpg

This new Civic will be offered exclusively with a hybrid powertrain, with the core Civic line-up turning towards electrification as part of Honda’s mission to electrify all of its European models by 2025.

In a blow for UK manufacturing, this will also be the first Civic on sale in Britain, but not built here, since the introduction of the fifth-generation car in 1994. The brand’s Swindon plant has been sold to new owners. Production of the Mk10 model will cease next month and with it Honda will end 36 years of car and engine manufacturing in Britain and the EU.

This new Mk11 car will be built in Japan, likely using an evolution of the Mk10 car’s platform.

No specs have been revealed but Honda has confirmed that the e:HEV hybrid system already deployed in the Jazz supermini, the new CR-V and soon to launch in the HR-V will be standard across all variants.

Two versions of the e:HEV hybrid drivetrain have been used in the Jazz, the HR-V and the CR-V. The Jazz supermini and the HR-V crossover both make use of a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. The motor is used to charge a small battery pack feeding two electric motors. All-electric running over short distances, hybrid running, and propulsion from the petrol engine are all possible.

In the Jazz, the system develops 108bhp, with the HR-V’s e:HEV system producing 129bhp. More power is available in the larger CR-V, which uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with a battery and dual electric motor configuration rated at 181bhp.

Honda has only revealed exterior images of the new hatchback. The design borrows heavily from its saloon sibling, using the same new front end with a more horizontally aligned look than before.
The nose is squarer and is flanked by flatter LED headlights. The upper grille is smaller, though the grille section on the lower apron grows in size. The position of the A-pillar moves backwards to give the impression of a larger bonnet.

Moving down the sides, a strong character line runs from the bonnet to the new look tail-lights, integrated into a sleek, almost fastback-like rear end with a small lip spoiler at the bottom of the windscreen.

Honda has not revealed any interior images, but based on the US-spec car we can expect a total overhaul inside. A new, de-cluttered dashboard arrives with a long, horizontal theme for the dash containing the ventilation and switchgear. There’s also a new floating style touchscreen infotainment system. The standard unit sizes up at seven inches, with a nine-inch system optional. Honda says the new system comes with simpler menus and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

It’s joined by fully digital instrumentation for the first time in the Civic. A new customisable 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster sits behind a redesigned steering wheel, but entry-level versions of the Civic use a seven-inch cluster, which retains an analogue speedometer.

New 2022 Honda Civic: full details of hybrid-only hatchback

Honda-Civic-front-static.jpg

Honda’s key European model debut in 2022 is the 11th-generation Civic, which follows 2021’s launch of the US-market saloon version and will be offered exclusively with hybrid power.

Honda-Civic-front-cabin.jpg
The new Civic, which will appear in five-door hatchback guise to rival cars such as the Ford Focus, new Peugeot 308 and VW Golf, embraces petrol-electric power alone, much like the firm’s Jazz, HR-V and CR-V models have in their latest iterations. The move is part of Honda’s plan to electrify its entire European line-up by 2025.

Honda-Civic-rear.jpg

The latest Civic will be the first Civic on sale in Britain but not built here since the fifth generation, which was introduced in 1994. Production of the outgoing version at Honda’s Swindon plant ceased in the summer, ending 36 years of car and engine manufacturing in Britain and the EU.

European versions of the new Mk11 car will be assembled at and exported from Honda’s Japanese factories instead. It will be built on the outgoing Civic’s platform, albeit with upgrades to boost rigidity.

Full European-spec details of the new Civic hatchback will be announced in the coming months. However, Honda has confirmed that the car won’t arrive on European roads until Autumn 2022.

New 2022 Honda Civic: design and technology
Honda has revealed only exterior images of the new hatchback so far, although we’re not expecting the European Civic’s interior to be drastically different to the US market car.

Unsurprisingly, the external design borrows heavily from that of its saloon sibling, using the same new front end with a more horizontally aligned look than before.

The nose is squarer and is flanked by flatter LED headlights. The upper grille is smaller, although the grille section on the lower apron grows in size. The position of the A-pillar moves backwards to give the impression of a larger bonnet.

Moving down the sides, a strong character line runs from the bonnet to the new-look tail-lights, integrated into a sleek, almost fastback-like rear end with a small lip spoiler at the bottom of the windscreen.

The US-spec interior features a substantial overhaul over the outgoing model’s. With a more minimalist and less cluttered dashboard, there’s also a long, horizontal theme for the dash containing the ventilation controls and other switchgear.

There’s also a new floating style touchscreen infotainment system. The standard unit is a 7.0-inch unit, rising to 9.0 inches on higher-end versions; all feature wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and, on certain versions, wireless phone charging.

That combines with a 10.2 inch digital instrument cluster that’s customisable and sits behind a redesigned steering wheel. Entry-level versions of the Civic may use a more conventional instrument cluster with analogue dials.

Honda has claimed it uses high-quality interior materials in the US-spec car, especially on touchpoints, while the seats have been redesigned too.

New 2022 Honda Civic: Engines and performance
UK-specific details of the new Civic remain under wraps for now, but Honda has confirmed hybrid-only power.

Currently, the company offers the Jazz and HR-V with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that’s linked to two electric motors and a small battery pack. In the former model it makes 108bhp, while the latter produces 129bhp. We expect the Civic to feature the higher-output variant.

New 2022 Honda Civic e:HEV hybrid revealed for Europe

Honda Civic hybrid-11.jpg

The all-new 11th-generation Honda Civic has been revealed in European specification. Base versions will only be offered as a hybrid model using Honda’s e:HEV technology, but a hot Type R version is in the pipeline too.

Honda Civic hybrid-7.jpg
We’ve already seen the new Honda Civic in US-market form as a saloon but the new hatchback variant shows us what UK buyers can expect when it goes on sale in Autumn this year.

Honda Civic hybrid-8.jpg

The 2022 Civic is somewhat toned down from the current model with no fake vents, fewer slashes and an overall cleaner look. At the front it’s unsurprisingly the same as the saloon, but the big changes compared to that variant are at the rear with what Honda says is a fast-back design. This results in a much larger boot opening than the saloon courtesy of the hatchback shape.

Honda Civic hybrid-9.jpg

The estate model was ditched with the 10th generation Civic and it’s not likely to return with the new model. The wheelbase has been extended by 35mm over the tenth-generation hatchback with a wider rear track, too, for greater cornering stability.

Honda Civic hybrid.jpg

The launch of the hybrid Civic means Honda’s European lineup is now fully electrified. The e:HEV name has already been used on the hybrid Jazz, CR-V and HR-V but in the Civic the powertrain will be a newly developed 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle engine. With the 72-cell lithium-ion battery, dual electric motor system and engine combined, the powertrain pumps out at 181bhp and 315Nm of torque with WLTP-rated CO2 emissions at under 110g/km.

Honda Civic hybrid-2.jpg

The switch to hybrid power means Honda will have a more direct rival to the Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Ioniq.

Honda Civic hybrid-4.jpg

The Civic has been available as a hybrid in other markets before, but this will be the first time a hybrid Civic hatchback will be made available to UK buyers, discounting the short-lived, standalone Civic Hybrid saloon. It’ll also be the only powertrain option - discounting the upcoming Type R version which we expect will retain the outgoing hot hatch’s 316bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged powertrain.

Driving modes range from Eco, Normal, Sport and Individual which can allow the Civic to switch between fully-electric, hybrid and engine-only power.

There are three trim levels to choose from; Elegance, Sport and Advance. Pick the range-topping Advance model and inside you’ll be greeted by a 10.2-inch drivers’ display LCD panel and a BOSE 12-speaker sound system. There’s also a new nine-inch central touchscreen as standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Honda has given the new Civic its new version of SENSING - the firm’s system of advanced safety features. This includes a 100-degree front wide-view camera, improved recognition technology, lane keep assist, low speed braking control and blind spot information.

Production of the new Civic will take place in Japan, with Honda recently selling the Swindon plant where previous generations have been built. No prices have been announced for the UK but we can expect it to sit around the same price point as the recently updated £28,625 mild-hybrid Ford Focus.
