Hello guys.
I own a Swift Vxi (2009) which I bought used in August 2015. The car came with a very basic ICE setup back then - Sony CDS GTX270S powering Sony coaxials in all 4 doors. This sytem had seen its share of abuses and was missing punch and clarity. Moreover the distortion at mid-volumes and lack of USB playback was getting on my nerves.
I decided to upgrade the entire system to a well-planned setup in around 2 months (getting funds and researching). I auditioned almost all the ootions available and set individual budgets for every part of equipment, which I didn't cross thankfully. Below was the equipment I got with the prices (wuth bill and warranty, arranged through a friend of mine, I get genuine products even though the prices are high) -
JVC KDR80BT - Rs. 11k
JBL MS 62C Components - Rs. 16k
JBL GTO 949 Coaxials - Rs. 5.5k
Infinity Kappa 120.9w - Rs. 12k
Focal Solid 1 Amplifier - Rs. 15k
JBL GTO 804EZ - Rs. 13k
JBL Amp Wiring Kit with Scosche RCAs - Rs. 5.5k
Dynamat Bulk Pack 36 Sq. Ft. - Rs. 17k (15k after discount)
Water guard Spacers x4, Connectors for terminals, Dash Plate, MDF Plank for amplifier, MDF Plank for speakers, Sealed MDF Enclosure, Speaker wire - Rs. 5k
This setup costed me just under Rs. 95k and was done as a complete DIY (except Head Unit and Dash plate mounting) successfully over a period of around 5 days. Yes, I didn't use the car for that period! The old system (complete with wiring) went for Rs. 5k.
Now I am planning for an upgrade to get a more SQ biased setup. The problem with current setup is that the coaxials and subwoofer get too loud at times and disturbs the front soundstage. I will research on this upgrade for around 6 months before making the purchase as I have to keep the upgraded equipment for a minimum of 2 years. My requirements are a totally SQ biased setup, with crystal clear vocals and punchy (not drowning) bass lines - a very quiet subwoofer with laid back speakers that would be comfortable for long listening periods also. The sound stage should be front biased, it is more heavy at the rear currently.
Option 1
Sell off all the existing equipment. This setup is 2-3 months old and I am getting offers around Rs. 75k from friends if I wish to sell. Is this a fair price?
After selling, I will plan each and every part from the beginning. What I want is powerful components at the front, rear coaxials (not too loud), 4 channel amplifier and mono block amplifier, completely new wiring and a new subwoofer with another VFM 1DIN HU (Aux, USB, 13 Band EQ, Bluetooth, Detachable face plate). The total budget would be around Rs. 40k extra from what I will get after selling in this case.
Option 2
Sell off some parts of the equipment and get better replacements for them. I will be buying new components for the front and a powerful 4 channel amplifier at least. I will sell the current 4 channel and will move the MS 62C to the rear doors if I don't get a good price. I will keep the JVC HU, Infinity 120.9w and Focal Solid 1 as it is along with the amplifier wiring - as this is a capable HU and SQ Sub getting ample power (470w RMS at 2 Ohms) from the amplifier. I ultimately plan to have 2 sets of components, 4 channel amplifier and current JBL coaxials with current HU, subwoofer and mono amplifier. The price I may getting for individual components (my estimate) -
JVC KDR80BT - Rs. 7k
JBL MS 62C Components - Rs. 10k
JBL GTO 804EZ - Rs. 9k
JBL Amp Wiring Kit with Scosche RCAs - Rs. 3k
Dash Plate, MDF Plank for amplifier, MDF Plank for speakers, Sealed MDF Enclosure, Speaker wire - Rs. 2.5k
The budget would be around 31.5k + 40k = Rs. 70k for new equipment.
New HU (1DIN High end) - Rs. 15k
New Components - Rs. 17k
4 Channel Amp - Rs. 18k
Wiring kit + RCAs - Rs. 7k
Dash plate, MDF Plank for amplifier, MDF Plank for speakers, Sealed MDF Enclosure, Speaker wire - Rs. 5k
Dampmat - Rs. 8k
Do I need a capacitor for my setup? If so, would 1 Farad do or I need something bigger? Also do I need a distribution block for powering 2 amplifiers? Which brand is suggested? Also, I would go for extra damping and planning to go for a 33 Sq. Ft. Dampmat pack this time instead of Dynamat. Any views on this.
More about my requirements -
I listen music in car 100% of the time everytime I am behind the wheel, which also I am 100% of the time. Lol. Anyway, I need no bling stuff and want the install to be simple and functional. I do not want lights or plexi glass or fiber glass boxes for the subwoofer. I listen to English songs mostly from my phone (Samsung) and USB. I need a front heavy soundstage without compromise of loudness at the rear. Vocals should be crystal clear and the bass should be tight and precise. Open to any brand from Pioneer to Sundown Audio whichever suits my needs. No Rockford Fosgate as I personally don't like the sound one bit. Speakers should be of the same brand (series) for a balanced stage. Not thinking of adding an equaliser or making the setup active for now.
Frankly, I would like to go for the second option
Looking for a good discussion on this topic. All suggestions would be appreciated.
