BYD, the world's largest electric carmaker by volume, is set to enter the mainstream Indian car market with an electric SUV claims a new report.
According to the report by the Economic Times, Chinese EV maker BYD, which currently sells the e6 electric MPV to corporates and fleet operators, is looking to enter the mainstream Indian electric car market this festive season with its Atto 3 electric SUV.
The publication further goes on to say that BYD will be making its presence felt at the 2023 Auto Expo in New Delhi. The electric carmaker will show off its battery tech and EV vehicle architecture at the Auto Expo as it looks to push forward with its aggressive long-term plans for the Indian market.
BYD initially plans to sell 10,000 electric vehicles in the Indian car market and will explore local manufacturing next year. The Chinese EV firm hopes to capture 10 to 15 per cent of the Indian electric passenger car market by the year 2030, though its plans to achieve this are not yet fully defined.
The Atto 3 will be BYD's first EV for the Indian passenger car market. The Atto 3 is the right-hand drive version of BYD's Yuan Plus electric SUV for the Chinese market and is currently sold in International markets like Australia, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore.
The Atto 3 is based on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 modular EV architecture and is offered with a choice of 2 battery packs - 50.12kWh and 60.48kWh - both of which use BYD's proprietary Lithium Iron Phosphate 'Blade' batteries. The BYD Atto 3's battery pack powers a single motor mounted on the front axle which produces 204bhp and 310Nm of peak torque. Range as per the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) is 430km for the smaller battery pack while the larger unit allows for 510 kilometres of driving on a single charge.
The BYD Atto 3 features a rather sporty design with sleek LED headlights and taillights with few chrome bits that should appeal to the Indian audience. Inside, the BYD Atto 3 comes packed with tech including a 12.8 infotainment screen that can rotate from portrait to landscape mode, a digital instrument cluster, a high definition 8-speaker audio setup and a host of ADAS safety features.
