Tata Sierra Concept: First official video out

At the 2020 Auto Expo, Tata Motors revealed the stunning Sierra as a concept vehicle, which stunned the visitors. The 90s car, Sierra was way ahead of its time in terms of design and technology. Well, the iconic nameplate makes a comeback with the concept Sierra, which became a major attraction at the 2020 Auto Expo. While it may take years before the Sierra concept takes the production form if Tata decides to make a production version of the vehicle, Tata has already released an official TVC showcasing the Tata Sierra’s highlights and design elements.

Concept is brilliant. Resurrection of SIERRA is on track!
So expect it to be back in EV guise but on OMEGA platform with additional fossil fuel variants too. Nice thought and Good ear by Pratap Bose. But it should be available in 3 Door as well as 5 door variants. It will make it rock!!!

It was a great gesture from Tata. As an earlier owner of the original Sierra (we ran it from '96 to '04, when we got the Scorpio) I must confess that together with the huge dollops of fun that came with the Sierra, there was a whole litany of niggles - large and small - that came with the car. We ran it over large parts of India - (mumbai>Lucknow>Naukuchiatal (Uttaranchal) >Mumbai and also to Madikeri in Coorg as well as Lucknow to Kolkata & back to Mumbai) - and the trips to Uttaranchal were specially fraught with niggles of all kinds showing up at the most inopportune moments. Tho' most of our hill driving was on the subsequent Scorpio, the Sierra was at the start of our tryst with Naukuchiatal.

I hope that the Sierra's new avatar offers 4WD/AWD to remain true to the SUV ethos and that Tata (and Pratap Bose) do their sums right in ensuring structural strength and integrity. With such a large glass area, that is the first thought that comes to mind. In '96 we were younger and "safety" had not yet become the buzzword that it is today! An e-version would be the icing on the cake!

Trying To Bring Tata Sierra EV Concept To Production, Says Pratap Bose

The Sierra concept is built on the ALFA ARC platform which is flexible enough for the carmaker to equip the car with an ICE engine, or even plonk an electric motor on to it. On the design front, the Sierra EV concept pays homage to the original Sierra, coupled with new modern design elements. The concept car sports wraparound rear glass just like the original Sierra, but unlike the latter which did not have rear doors at all, the Sierra EV seems a bit more practical and gets rear sliding doors.

The car has been designed keeping in mind Tata’s Impact 2.0 design language, and gets slim LED DRLs at the front, along with a body-width LED tail lamp. Inside the cabin, the car gets 360-degree movable seats along with futuristic tech. However, if Tata does decide to bring the Sierra EV concept to production form, the cabin will be made more practical and realistic.

When questioned about the likelihood of launching a production-ready version of the Sierra EV in the near future, Bose said that they will be trying to turn the concept into reality in the near future. “I’m going to try with every bone in my body to make this into a production product.” He also added that apart from a few concept elements, like the interiors of the car, the dimensions, the wheels, as well as the tyre size could be retained in the production-ready version of the car.

Splendid close-ups 350Z! The fit and finish (from the photos at least) and the detailing seem in a different league from the original Sierra,
which was a first attempt by Tata.

From the rear photos, one cannot spot the bottom part of the rear differential housing (as is usually the case with beam-axle RWDers).
So I assume that the rear carries some form of IRS, where the differential housing is attached to the under body and forms part of the unsprung
weight. I mention this as it would be a big disappointment if the new Sierra is offered with FWD only, without an AWD/4WD option. It would
perhaps be too optimistic to hope that it comes with RWD as standard and AWD as an option[cheers]

Tata Estate based on the new Sierra: What it’ll look like

This rendering image is by SRK, who has put it up on the YouTube channel. Since the original Sierra and the Estate shared the same platform, the new-generation duo is expected to do the same. The Estate rendering is based on the Tata Sierra and they both share a lot of design attributes.

This Tata Estate is an extended form of the 2020 Tata Sierra concept showcased at the Auto Expo. It gets the same sleek front-end design with a split headlamp set-up. The Estate also gets similar headlamps like the Sierra concept. Down below, the bumper has been tweaked to make it look different.

The body of the Estate is much longer than the Sierra and it gets a big greenhouse with a Range Rover-ish look. Since this is a concept model, it gets flushed door handles and sharp looking alloy wheels. If this vehicle ever enters the production line, it will look very different from this. At the rear, the car gets the sleek LED tail lamps.

The rendering of the production Tata electric car, shared on Vandibhranthanmar’s Facebook page, offers a slightly different take than the concept Sierra EV: The headlights get a bit of inspiration from the Audi Q2, while the rear doors abandon the sliding-type opening for conventional units. The production model rendering ignores the glass roof which is a big element to miss on the Sierra.

If the Tata Sierra is green lit for production, prospective buyers can expect a 48V mild hybrid system in the very least, in addition to a battery electric vehicle (BEV) variant. The mild hybrid system is already in the development phase for products such as the Harrier and the upcoming Gravitas. A strong hybrid system is not of the question, but its future depends on government support by means of subsidy for partially electrified vehicles that is absent today.

Autocar India reports that New Tata Sierra will be an all-electric vehicle. There will never be an internal combustion engine model produced because it’ll be based on Sigma Platform which is customized for EVs. (link)
