Can somebody explain what these actually mean as far as the tires are concerned?

How do you read these numbers?

175/70, 155/80, 175/R14 70

Ok for explanation lets take the last one " 175/R14 70 "

1) The first number "175" is the tiers Width in mm

2) "R" stands for radial construction & 14 is the diameter of the tier.

3) The last number "70" refers to height of sidewalls.Like its 70% of the section width"175".

& the R is always mentioned later. I mean its always in this way "175/70R14. [:)]

Thanks so much folks.

"14 is the diameter of the tier" - I presume this is in inches right?

Correction:

14 indicates the diameter of the rim and not the tyre.

The complete tyre reading is as - 175/70R14 84T

Here 84 is "Load Index" This is a number corresponds to the maximum load in kilograms that a tyre can support when properly inflated.

And T is "Speed Rating" This is a number that corresponds to the maximum service speed for a tyre. T means - 190KMPH. See chart below -

Most queries are answered. I am going to post a very important info so that you members are not sold old tires. You should understand that tires do have expiry date as they are made of organic material.

Whoops.
This is news to me.
Is that the month and year of manufacturing, or the month and year of expiry??

its just their company specific code. It manufacturing week and year and not expiry date as some of you are assuming.

PS: in above attachment its 3rd week of year 2005. Hence the tyre is made in mid Jan of 2005

Tyres do have an expiry date as it will break down after some years and there will be cracks in the tyre after it has passed its prime. It might blow out or fail if it has been on the shelf for some years and you have bought and put it on your car.
