Buying a new car is always exciting. But unless you're a high roller with a lot of money to burn, the decision to buy a car won't be a spontaneous one. It requires a lot of research and financial planning to find the right ride for your tastes and budget.

Unfortunately, despite the impact that buying a car has on a man's wallet, many guys neglect to properly educate themselves on the process. They end up getting swindled at the dealership, driving an inferior automobile or needlessly paying for extras.

Let me start here.According to me the worst mistake one could make is
"Falling in love with a model"

When spending tens of thousands of dollars on a car, emotion shouldn't rule the day. Becoming infatuated with a single model can blind you to alternative vehicles that may be better for your needs or make you skimp on thoroughly researching a vehicle's ratings, reviews, reliability, or safety and pricing information. To determine which vehicle is best for you, you should set emotion aside and focus on doing your homework, comparing different models, and assessing your real wants and needs. There will be plenty of time for emotion after you've bought the vehicle.

biggest car buying mistake for me was buying a second hand chrysler voyager from my wife's brother. needed a 7 seater
he told me that he was getting a R170000 trade in and that i could have it for that price, but after a while i was told that he was only getting R110000 and i had in fact paid much more than the retail price. stupidity in trusting and not doing homework. i dont let it bother me but it still freaks out the wife and its already 7 years now. but both my girls learnt to drive in this and we still have it

govenderruf theoretically you might have lost R60000 in the process , but if it freaks out your wife and can be used wisely in arguments for a life time(as it was her brother) - i think its a small price paid [;)]

baawaahaha
i have been using it from time to time
but i dont overdo it
she has a lot more over me

i have lost a lot more
my brother used the van when he was down here from canada 2 years ago.
damaged the radiator in an accident and drove with an overheating engine. he was off home the next day and it took me over a year to sort out the engine. did not keep tally of cost.
hopefully i have learnt from all this

Worst car buying mistake for me.

Buying a 1.2 instead of a 1.6. [frustration]
maybe when you get the 1600, you will wish for a 1800

the citi golf is a huge buy here for the young ones
they buy a 1200 for 30gs
spend 20gs trying to make it go like a 1600
when they could have bought a 1600 for 40gs

but then, was that a mistake

Nope, I wont.

Because the car comes in only two variants. 1.2 and 1.6

I have never repent for the decissions i have took . obviously because it was taken by me. But curious to know how many people would have done that so sharing my exp..

I Bought my swift LDI over the VDI.ABS in 2011 just because i wanted it on my birthday and similarly our family took a Grey innova over the white due to my lack of patience, sometimes or most of the times the heart jumps the logic of the mind to win the race

But maturity comes with age, better said than ever[lol]

Sort of my mistake too, to go for 1.2 polo when 1.6 was available. I didn't opt for 1.6 fearing very low FE, but then later came to know that both of them have similar FE figures!!

What made you not choose 1.6?

My biggest mistake was not choose Punto 90 HP (fully loaded and in 7 lakh OTR) instead of Punto Emotion 1.3 (75 BHP).

Well, initially the car was supposed to be for mom, so I thought, what will she do with a 1.6.

But now, its me who has to drive it over long distances. And the lack of extra power hurts.

BTW, I got a Fabia.

I know you got fabia. Read your threads sometime back.

Wasn't fabia 1.4 available that time? It could have been an optimal solution to power and your needs..
