News is that new Swift Dezire is expected to have length of under 4 mtrs. This will allow Maruti to enjoy excise duty of 10% instead of existing 22% for Dezire. Expected cost savings due to excise duty benefit is @40k. Present engine specs will continue with the speculation of 90bhp diesel as well. Boot space would be reduced significantly. This new version might be out in the market in later part of this year.

So Maruti following the Tata way?

So this can be the facelifted Dzire along with Swift?

I think Maruti is slightly worried about Etios already!

Awww man!! I really hope that Maruti designs this Compact Dzire from scratch and not just attach a chopped boot at the back of the upcoming refreshed 2011 swift..:please: The above pic just looks horrifying to me.. A BIG No No.
A small little advise to Maruti, Work hard on the A-pillar design of the current Dzire with a smaller boot, and please please please improve the build Quality, use Thick Sheet metal especially for the boot, and Voila! Maruti will have another hot selling cake in their hands!

An update:

NEW DELHI: A price war is in the offing in the entry-level sedan segment with Maruti Suzuki looking to downsize the Dzire to under four metre to fit the car in the small car definition and avail lower excise benefits, a move that will give it elbow room to be more price-competitive .

The Dzire, leader in the entry sedan segment , is a hot seller for Maruti and accounts for about 8,000-9 ,000 units monthly. However , the entry of Toyota Etios at a highly competitive price (Delhi ex-showroom price just under Rs 5 lakh for the basic model) has prompted Maruti to go for this rejig.

While company officials refused to comment , it is believed that the Maruti's R&D team is working on reducing the length of the car to under four metre. In its present avatar, the Dzire has a length of 4.16 metre that puts it in the category of a big car, thus attracting excise duty of 22%.

The length reduction will cut excise by more than half to 10%. The Delhi ex-showroom price of the car is between Rs 4.88 lakh and Rs 7.07 lakh and industry analysts said the duty reduction could result in a benefit of approximately 8% or between Rs 40,000 and Rs 56,000. However, it is not clear how much of this benefit the company will pass on to the consumer.

When contacted, a spokesperson for the company said, "We do not comment on future products and refreshments."

The Dzire is currently available on 1200cc petrol and 1250cc diesel engine, both of which are appropriate to give it lower excise duty if the length gets reduced.

In reducing the size of the Dzire, Maruti seems to be following the industry trend of downsizing vehicle size to avail of lower excise duty. Tata Motors was perhaps the first one to do this when it reduced its Indigo sedan to under four metre to make the Indigo CS, a car that looked like a sedan but came around the pricing of an upper compact car.
Mahindra is also believed to be doing the same with the Logan sedan and the multiutility Xylo. Maruti is also doing it for competitive reasons. The runaway success of the Etios would be a concern for the company's marketing bosses as it hits directly at the Dzire.

While low production numbers of Etios (currently 35,000 annually) means that the model may not be an immediate threat to the Dzire, it could impact the model in the long run once Toyota starts churning out more units.

Re: New Swift DZire to be Under 4 Meters Length?

Maybe Maruti Suzuki is not too happy with the current backlog for DZire. They wish to create more. The idea of under four meters length will be a very cost-effective method to take the value for money factor of the DZire to another level but don’t know how will those people react who do not already like the rear of this car much. Anyways, if this is done, I expect the Ex. Showroom starting price to be at least Rs.4 – 4.5 Lakhs. Sounds good in written but in real? Yet to be seen.

Looks like Swift DZire is indeed getting chopped under 4m length. Checkout the scoop pic by ACI. The report says that the shortened Dzire will be ready for production in November 2011 but the actual launch is likely to happen in January 2012 at the Auto Expo in New Delhi.

The car in the pic looks much better than the current disproportionate Dzire. [thumbsup]

Scoop Swift Dzire Sub 4 Meter

first to reveal that Maruti was secretly working on a sub-four metre-long Swift Dzire and this spy shot taken by one our readers in Gurgaon is concrete proof that Maruti has done just that.
At a length of under four metres and engine capacities under 1.2 and 1.5 litres for petrol and diesel, respectively, the car would enjoy benefits of a low excise duty of just 10%, as opposed to 22% on bigger cars. Only the Indigo CS can boast of the same privilege so far. This would mean that the Dzire could start at an all-new price that is substantially lower than the current model and we estimate a cost benefit of around Rs. 30,000 to 40,000 to the customer According to sources, the shortened Dzire will be ready for production in November 2011 but the actual launch is likely to happen in January 2012 at the Auto Expo in New Delhi.

That's some good stuff. New DZire is not looking that bad at all and the design of wheel covers is also attractive. But if the production begins by year end, that means Maruti will continue selling current DZire along with new Swift in meanwhile.

PS: Finally it will have the beige interiors.

Looks great and resembles Fabia back. Wheel caps are far better than the current ones.
BTW where is the boot?[;)] just kidding, I could hardly find a small projection over there. Any info on the boot capacity?

Fantastic move.
Far better than the 4meter Indigo CS.
IMO it's good for young couples rather than a 2+2 family.
Maruthi please introduce this YOUTH at the earliest.

Yes. The boot space will be obviously compromised but still expect to be better than most of the hatchbacks. Tata Indigo e-CS itself has around 380 Liters of boot space, so hope it should fall around on the same lines.
